Overview

Vidu is a cloud service for generating short videos and images from text, still images, and reference footage. It is aimed at independent creators as well as teams producing social posts, e-commerce clips, advertising, and professional video work. The 16-second generation limit makes it a focused short-form tool rather than a replacement for a full-length editor.

Its combination of several generation modes, image tools, templates, sound effects, an agent for multi-shot clips, and an enterprise API gives it more range than a single-purpose animation service. The trade-offs are important for buyers: subscription credits expire after 30 days, subscriptions renew automatically, and Vidu says it does not provide refunds.

Key features

Video from text, images, and references

Text-to-Video, Image-to-Video, and Reference-to-Video let you start with a written brief, a still image, or reference video. Vidu describes audiovisual output up to 16 seconds at a maximum of 1080p, covering animation, live action, advertisements, and short films. That ceiling suits social media posts, product demonstrations, and short promotional inserts; longer narratives will require multiple generations and an external editing workflow.

Image and assisted creation

Text-to-image and reference-to-image tools make Vidu useful when the visual asset does not yet exist. Templates and AI sound effects help assemble a more complete clip. Vidu Agent can turn an idea or task into a 15–30-second multi-shot video with voiceover, offering a better fit for a small sequence than a single 16-second generation. Its real-time model is described as responding in milliseconds and generating at conversational pace, which is most relevant to interactive or iterative workflows.

API, commercial use, and privacy

An API platform lets developers and enterprises integrate generation into their own products. Commercial use is supported, and deployment is cloud-based, so teams do not manage local model infrastructure. Vidu's API privacy policy describes administrative, logical, physical, and managerial safeguards, including hardware encryption and secure transmission. Personal data is transferred to and stored in facilities and servers in Singapore. Users retain ownership of their content, but the terms grant Vidu a perpetual, irrevocable licence that includes AI training and product improvement; organisations should review that provision before sending sensitive material.

Pricing

Vidu uses a freemium model with a free plan and a free trial. New users receive trial credits when they register, and additional credits can be earned through daily login and events.

Paid subscriptions are offered for individual creators and enterprise plans for team collaboration, with enterprise pricing supplied on a custom basis. Subscription credits are valid for 30 days, while purchased and bonus credits remain valid for two years. Stripe subscriptions renew automatically monthly or annually. Vidu says subscriptions are non-refundable and directs customers to support for cancellation assistance. These terms make Vidu more suitable for buyers who can use a predictable monthly allowance than for occasional users who may leave credits unused.

Platforms

Vidu runs on the web and provides an API. Vidu states that its R1 experience is available on desktop and mobile through the Vidu app. Support is provided through documentation and email at support@vidu.com.

Who it's for

Solo creators can use the free access and multiple input modes to make short social or product clips without assembling separate image and video tools. Small and mid-market teams gain shared commercial-production possibilities and an API route for integrating generation into workflows. Enterprise buyers get an integration path and collaboration-oriented plans, but should assess the Singapore data location, content licence, credit expiry, and no-refund policy against internal requirements. Vidu is a poor fit when the primary need is long videos, output above 1080p, or credits that remain indefinitely available.

Pros and cons

Pros

Multiple starting points: text, images, and reference video support different creative workflows.
Useful short-form toolkit: image generation, templates, sound effects, and Vidu Agent extend beyond one-shot video generation.
Product integration: an API and commercial-use permission support services and internal applications.
Accessible entry: a free plan, registration credits, and event or daily-login credits allow experimentation before a subscription.

Cons

Short output ceiling: standard generations stop at 16 seconds, limiting continuous scenes and longer edits.
Credit expiry: subscription credits disappear after 30 days, which penalises irregular usage.
Rigid billing terms: monthly or annual Stripe subscriptions renew automatically and are not refundable.
Content-licence consideration: the perpetual licence includes AI training and product improvement, a material concern for confidential work.

Alternatives

Choose HeyGen instead when you need Android and iOS apps or a free allowance of up to three one-minute videos each month. Pika is an alternative for API, iOS, and web access with a free tier built around packs rather than a monthly credit allocation. Hedra suits buyers who prefer clearly priced monthly plans, including 2,000 credits for $20 per month or 7,200 credits for $50 per month.

Animate Photo AI is worth considering for a free 50-credit starting tier and plans organised around video and image models. AnimatePhoto offers one-time credit packs as well as monthly billing, useful when recurring subscriptions are undesirable. AnimateDiff is the free, self-hosted and Linux-oriented option for users comfortable with an academic release rather than a hosted commercial service. Immersity AI is better when image conversion, API access, and a 720p non-commercial free tier are the priority. Kling AI provides a free-forever basic option with 30 element creations and no monthly credits.

Verdict

Vidu is a strong choice for creators and organisations that want several text-, image-, and reference-driven video modes, supporting image tools, and an API in one cloud platform. Choose it when short commercial clips and product integration matter more than long-form timelines. Look elsewhere if unused credits, refund flexibility, stricter content control, or outputs longer than 16 seconds are central to the purchase.
