Overview

Vital’s spectral-warping oscillators reshape wavetable harmonics through stretching, shifting, smearing and skewing. That gives sound designers several ways to move beyond stock timbres, while sample conversion and direct wavetable editing make it possible to build sounds from existing material. Vital is a focused synth, not a general-purpose instrument library, so it is a better fit for sound creation than for someone seeking many acoustic or ensemble instruments.

Key features

Wavetables can be made by pitch-splicing or vocoding samples, edited directly, or generated from text. Text generation runs as a web service and allows five requests a day unless a plan unlocks unlimited use. That is enough for occasional experimentation, but a workflow built around frequent prompt-generated tables will run into the cap on Basic and Plus.

Modulation includes drag-and-drop routing, audio-rate modulation, stereo-splittable and keytracked LFOs, and custom envelope curves. Two routable voice filters and eight routable effects support further sound shaping, while an oscilloscope and spectrum viewer help inspect the resulting signal. MPE support and microtonal tuning files broaden its appeal for expressive controllers and nonstandard tuning setups.

Vital supports VST, VST3, AU and LV2 plugin formats. It requires 64-bit operation and OpenGL 3 or higher; supported systems are Windows 10+, macOS 10.15+ and Ubuntu Linux 18.04+.

Pricing

Vital uses a freemium model, and the Basic plan is free. It includes 75 presets, 25 wavetables and the full synth feature set, so the central sound-design tools are not held back for paying users. Its smaller included library and five-request daily text-generation allowance are the main reasons to move up.

Plus costs 25.00 USD per once and adds 250 presets and 70 wavetables while retaining the full synth. It is the straightforward choice for buyers who want a larger starting library without a subscription. Pro costs 80.00 USD per once, with 400+ presets, 150 wavetables and unlimited text-to-wavetable; it fits users who want both the largest stated library and uncapped prompt generation.

The Subscription plan costs 5.00 USD per month and includes store credit, subscriber-only packs, unlimited text-to-wavetable and prioritized support through private Discord channels or the forum. It suits users who value those ongoing benefits, but unlike the one-time tiers it carries a recurring monthly charge. Basic, Plus and Pro have no listed subscriber support benefit.

Platforms

Vital runs on Linux, macOS and Windows, with the stated minimums of Ubuntu Linux 18.04+, macOS 10.15+ and Windows 10+. The 64-bit and OpenGL 3-or-higher requirements are worth checking before installation, particularly on older systems. Its VST, VST3, AU and LV2 formats give it options across different plugin hosts.

Who it's for

Vital is best suited to producers and sound designers who want to build or reshape synth timbres, use detailed modulation, or work with MPE and microtonal tuning. Basic is a strong entry point for learning the full synth without paying; Plus makes sense for a larger preset and wavetable collection, while Pro or Subscription is more appropriate for frequent text-to-wavetable use. It is less suitable for buyers whose priority is a broad collection of sampled instruments.

Pros and cons

Pro: Basic includes the full synth feature set, so the core instrument is usable without a paid plan.
Pro: Sample conversion, wavetable editing and text generation offer distinct routes to custom timbres.
Pro: Extensive modulation options, routable filters and effects, plus signal viewers, support both sound shaping and inspection.
Pro: Linux, macOS and Windows support, with four listed plugin formats, makes Vital adaptable to varied setups.
Con: Text-to-wavetable is limited to five requests per day on plans that do not unlock unlimited use, which constrains prompt-heavy workflows.
Con: The free plan includes fewer presets and wavetables than Plus or Pro, so users wanting a larger ready-made collection must pay.
Con: The stated graphics and operating-system requirements may rule out older computers.

Alternatives

Dexed is a free alternative for someone who wants free synthesizer software across Linux, macOS and Windows. Surge XT is another free, open-source virtual instrument plugin for those platforms. BBC Symphony Orchestra is worth considering instead when the goal is an orchestral instrument collection, with a free Discover tier and a paid Core tier.

IK Multimedia ReSing offers a free tier and a one-time paid tier, and may suit someone looking for a voice-focused instrument rather than a wavetable synth. Pianoteq is a paid alternative with a free trial and fits buyers looking for piano-oriented instruments across desktop and iOS. Repro is a paid synth option with a free trial; its demo emits crackling sound.

EZmix 3 is a paid option with a free trial for someone considering a different kind of music-production software. XO is a paid plugin and standalone option for macOS and Windows that includes 8700+ one-shot samples and 240+ beat presets, making it a better fit for sample- and beat-oriented work than wavetable sound design.
