Overview

VitalPBX is a Linux-based business phone system built on Asterisk, for organizations that want control over their own telephony setup. It is strongest for teams that need call-center capabilities or multiple PBX tenants and can take responsibility for hosting and server setup. The free Community tier makes it possible to start small, but the monthly plans and their client limits need close matching to the way a team works.

Key features

Custom call routing, an auto attendant and voicemail transcription cover practical needs for directing and handling business calls. VitalPBX describes a set of more than 150 features, including call management and call-center capabilities. That breadth gives growing operations room to build a more involved phone system, but it comes with the work of managing a Linux-based deployment.

VitXi is a WebRTC client for browser access, and VitalPBX Connect provides mobile connectivity. Desktop and mobile apps are available across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. The client allowances are a real constraint: Community includes two VitXi clients, while Enterprise, Call Center and Multi-Tenant each include two mobile clients. Teams expecting broad browser or mobile access should check those limits before settling on a plan.

CRM connections include Zoho, Odoo and Salesforce, with SMS and WhatsApp integration as well. The listed AI functions include an AI Agent, transcription for voicemail and recordings, Helpdesk AI and Audio from Text. These capabilities broaden the system beyond call routing, though the plans do not specify which tiers include each AI function.

Every compared plan includes a firewall and intrusion detection. Deployment options include an ISO and guides for virtual machines, hardware and VPS installations. VitalPBX provides licensing only, leaving server setup and hosting to the customer; community support comes through a forum and wiki, while paid plans include ticket support and professional support is available for purchase.

Pricing

Community is free and includes 12 extensions, two VitXi WebRTC clients, provisioning for up to 20 devices and forum support. It is a sensible starting point for a small installation that fits those caps, but the extension and client limits make it a poor fit for a larger team.

Enterprise costs 100.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes 50 VitXi WebRTC clients, two mobile clients and one tenant. It suits a single-tenant organization that needs more browser clients, though the two-mobile-client allowance may limit mobile-heavy teams.

Call Center costs 200.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes two mobile clients and one tenant. It adds Sonata call-center modules such as Switchboard, Billing, Recording, Dialer and Stats, making it the more relevant choice for a single-tenant operation that needs those tools. Multi-Tenant costs 250.00 USD per month, billed monthly, includes two mobile clients and lists up to 100 tenants; it is aimed at service providers and others managing multiple PBXs. Its value depends on needing that tenant scale, since the mobile-client allowance remains small.

A free trial is available. Hosting and server costs sit outside these plan prices, because customers are responsible for their own infrastructure.

Platforms

VitalPBX supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, web access, extensions, API access and self-hosted deployment. That mix accommodates organizations connecting desk phones, browser clients and mobile users, while self-hosting puts infrastructure management on the buyer.

Who it's for

VitalPBX is aimed at SMBs, enterprises, call centers, carriers and service providers. It fits best when an organization has the people and infrastructure to run its own phone system and can choose a plan around its extension, client and tenant needs. Businesses looking for a hosted service that avoids server setup should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free Community tier supports 12 extensions and provisioning for 20 devices, giving small deployments room to start without a license charge.
Pros: Call-center modules and a plan with up to 100 tenants serve organizations with more specialized or multi-PBX needs.
Pros: CRM, SMS, WhatsApp and listed AI functions extend the system beyond basic calling.
Cons: Customers must arrange hosting and server setup, adding operational responsibility beyond the monthly license.
Cons: Client allowances are narrow in several plans, with two mobile clients in each paid tier and only two VitXi clients in Community.
Cons: Enterprise, Call Center and Multi-Tenant start at $100.00 USD per month, so the higher-capacity options require a meaningful recurring commitment.

Alternatives

Compare business phone systems if you want to weigh a wider range of products before choosing a deployment model.

Microsoft Teams is a better fit for organizations prioritizing meetings and collaboration: its free plan allows 100 participants in group meetings of up to 60 minutes and includes 5 GB of cloud storage. 3CX is another freemium phone-system option, with a free plan for 10 users and four simultaneous calls that must be manually renewed each year.

Freshcaller may suit teams seeking a cloud-oriented contact-center option, with a free plan offering unlimited agents and pay-per-minute calling. CallHippo has a free Basic plan for the first six months from signup. PortSIP PBX is another freemium, self-hosted PBX option, with its free edition capped at two simultaneous calls and three extensions.

Talkroute, Zoho Voice and Zoom Phone are also alternatives to consider.

Verdict

Choose VitalPBX if you need a self-hosted phone system with call-center tools, integration options or room to manage many PBX tenants, and have the capacity to run its infrastructure. Its free tier is useful within strict extension and client caps, while the paid plans target more specialized deployments. Look elsewhere if you need hosting handled for you or require more mobile clients than the plans allow.
