What is Daylight Saving Time (DST)?

There are many people who do not know what Daylight Saving Time really means? So, if you are trying to search for the exact definition of Daylight Saving Time you are at the right place. The Geeks writes it for you!

Daylight Saving Time, better known as DST in abbreviated form is a practice of changing time by setting clock (1) hour ahead of the standard time (during summers) and resetting it back by one hour behind; during fall to gain one free extra hour.

This is usually observed during summer in countries of America, Europe and even in some other parts of the world. In British English and European official terminology DST is referred to as summer time. The modern DST was first proposed in 1895 by George Vernon Hudson.

Many, sometimes after getting confused ask whether a clock runs forward or backwards? Well, Daylight Saving Time does not really mean the clock changes the time itself, but it is changed manually.

DST begins in the Northern Hemisphere between March and April (summer) and it ends between September and November (winter/fall), where the standard time begins during these months and ends in March-April, reversely. To best describe the time changes, the saying goes this way, “spring forward, fall backward”.

Why observe Daylight Saving Time?

Many people observe Daylight as time saving and fortunately, many countries observe DST to make better use of the daylight in the evenings. What people believed earlier was that daylight saving gives them more time to play during summer evenings. But that was a very wrong notion. The most important thing why Benjamin Franklin first suggested DST in 1784 is to conserve energy. The study show that observing Daylight Saving Time help reduce the usage of energy, waste of oil, coal, etc. This helps in lessening the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) one of the major pollutants that harms our Mother Nature.
