Canadian based Kobo is generally known for their e-Readers but the company released Kobo Arc tablet at the end of last year and entered into the tablet market. According to new rumors, Kobo currently has a 10 inch HD tablet powered by an Nvidia Tegra processor in production and it is set to be released in September. The new tablet is codenamed Macallan and it features a 10 inch full color display with a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels.
The tablet appeared on a benchmark at the GLBenchmarks website last month and had gone unnoticed by nearly everyone. According to the benchmark which was removed, the tablet will come with a 1.8 GHz quad core Nvidia processor but it is not clear whether it is a Tegra 3 or Tegra 4 processor. The benchmark also reveals that the tablet will have 2 GB RAM and runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS with Kobo’s Tapestries UI on top.
There is no other information available regarding the detailed specifications of the tablet. Coming back to the tablet, Tapestries UI is the Kobo’s UI that puts emphasis on reading with the option to buy ebooks and offers a neat UI with social media management. We expect it to be a solid audio experience due to Kobo’s partnership with True Vision Audio. Kobo also has a new e-reader in the loop which will be released soon. According to a report, the successor to Kobo Glo e-Reader appeared at FCC.
Kobo also released a 7 inch Kobo Arc tablet last year which received good response. The current 10 inch tablet looks to compete with Nook HD, Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and the 10 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab. It is expected to give a tough competition to them. The magazines, games, movies and other multimedia content will look sharp on a 10 inch touchscreen with HD resolution. We don’t know how much it will be priced but expect the price to be north of $500.
The current Kobo Arc was a decent buy when it launched at USD 200 last year. To remind you, Kobo Arc has a 7 inch multi-touch IPS display with 1280×800 HD resolution. The tablet is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual core processor with 1 GB of RAM and dual core graphics and also sports a 1.3MP 720p HD front facing autofocus camera. It comes with dual front-facing speakers with SRS TruMedia sound and is 12.5 mm thick and weighs 364 g. The tablet comes with open access to Android 4.0 and offers 10 hours of reading or 2 weeks of standby time. It is available in 16/32/64 GB storage models. You can buy it here.
