Microsoft Surface RT tablets get up to 30% price cut. Buy now!

Due to lackluster sales, Microsoft has cut the price of its Windows RT Surface tablet models by $150. The tablet price makes sense now, even though Microsoft should have reached this target price sooner to get early sales. The entry level 32 GB model without a keyboard gets a 30% cut from $499 to $349, and the 64 GB model gets a 25% cut, with new price being $499.

The new price list of Windows Surface RT tablets is as follows:

  • Surface RT 32GB – $349.99
  • Surface RT 64GB – $449.99
  • Surface RT 32GB with Touch Cover – $449.99
  • Surface RT 64GB with Touch Cover – $549.99

The Surface RT hybrid tablets were introduced by Microsoft last October. Windows RT is a slimmed down version of Windows 8 with a few top tier legacy apps were missing and unable to run. For those who love document processing, Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 RT is included. The expected new model later this year demanded a price cut and Microsoft finally gave in.

Before the price cut, there were some very good alternatives at a similar price like Acer Iconia W510 which is available from February. It is a full Windows 8 Intel atom tablet with similar battery life, so there was nothing but looks of Surface tablets to supersede it. Dell XPS Windows RT tablet also got a price cut and is now available for $299. An optional $150 keyboard with integrated battery gets you 18 hours of charge.

Microsoft tried to boost its sales with the reduced price of $299 for schools and universities for 2 months this summer. It also offered discounts to its conference attendees on Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets. In May, it also offered a free cover. But the sales continued to decline. Microsoft sold only about 1.5 million Surface tablets with 1 million of those were RT, but it’s only half of what Microsoft expected. So finally a cut followed. Staples also had put in an advertisement which stated the cuts available from July 14.
