The record

Purpose: iTAG is PAI’s data labeling platform with built-in templates for images, text, video, audio, and multimodal data.
Image tasks: Built-in image tasks include image classification, object detection, image OCR, table recognition, and image semantic segmentation.
Template choices: iTAG provides official, tenant, and custom templates, and custom templates can be designed for business-specific labeling needs.
Multimodal templates: Official templates include Image-Text Explanation, conversation ranking, visual question answering, and video OCR.
Job workflow: A labeling job uses an OSS-backed dataset and template, then configures labels, subtasks, checks, labelers, and reviewers.
Storage integration: iTAG requires input data to be stored in Alibaba Cloud OSS; local or NAS data must first be uploaded to OSS.
Storage limitation: The PAI-iTAG workspace and OSS bucket must be in the same region, and dataset import requires an index file rather than a direct path to a folder of raw files.
AI-assisted labeling: Selected large-model labeling templates, including image-to-text and image-text explanation, are currently free, and Alibaba Cloud says it will notify users if pricing changes.
Current availability: From August 1, 2026, iTAG 1.0 is allowlist-only and in maintenance mode; existing customers with prior labeling tasks or datasets can continue using current features.
Alternative for new users: The overview directs users seeking AI-powered automatic dataset labeling to the Multimodal Data Management feature.
Security: Alibaba Cloud recommends using a RAM user with an API-only AccessKey and least-privilege permissions when accessing the iTAG API.
Support: The iTAG overview points users to its FAQ and an Alibaba Cloud AI assistant for product, solution, and documentation questions.
API: The iTAG OpenAPI supports operations including listing, creating, updating, and deleting templates and labeling tasks.
