Overview

DosKit is a free, open-source DOS environment built for the browser and installable as a Progressive Web App. It suits people who want a DOS prompt on desktop or mobile, including offline access after an initial visit. Its main appeal is that flexibility; browser and memory requirements make it less suitable for devices that cannot meet them.

Key features

DosKit boots to an interactive DOS command prompt, so it is useful for users who want to enter commands rather than launch only a preset application. URL parameters can load specific applications, including Second Reality and Impulse Tracker, which provides a direct way to open a chosen experience.

As a PWA, DosKit can be installed on desktop and mobile devices. Service-worker caching enables offline use after the first visit, a practical advantage when connectivity is unreliable. That convenience depends on a compatible browser: WebAssembly and JavaScript are required, and at least 2GB of RAM is recommended.

Input options include standard DOS keyboard keys, including function keys and special characters, mobile touch controls, and gamepad support. Sound Blaster and AdLib emulation provide audio output. DosKit uses js-dos 8.3.20 WebAssembly and supports DOSBox and DOSBox-X backends. Its command interface exposes pause, resume, mute, unmute, screenshot, and filesystem read/write commands, making it useful for users who need more than basic launch controls.

Internet Explorer is unsupported, and iOS Safari versions before 15 have limited WebAssembly support. If an issue arises, the project directs users to review existing GitHub issues or open one with browser, operating-system, and console-error details. DosKit is MIT-licensed; js-dos and DOSBox are listed under GPL-2.0 licenses.

Pricing

Free: 0.00 USD per free. The plan is an MIT-licensed, browser-based PWA, with source available. There are no paid plan costs to weigh, making it a straightforward option for individuals and teams comfortable with open-source software. The trade-off is that use depends on a compatible browser and device; at least 2GB of RAM is recommended.

Platforms

DosKit supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. The PWA can be installed on desktop and mobile devices, while offline operation begins after the first visit. Browser support remains a practical constraint, particularly on older iOS Safari.

Who it's for

DosKit is a good fit for people who want a cross-platform DOS prompt, offline access, and a choice of keyboard, touch, or gamepad input. Its command interface and filesystem operations also suit users who want programmatic controls. It is a weaker choice when the target device lacks WebAssembly or JavaScript support, has less than the recommended memory, or relies on Internet Explorer or older iOS Safari.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with broad desktop and mobile platform support.
Pros: Offline PWA operation after the first visit, plus URL-based application loading.
Pros: Keyboard, touch, and gamepad input, with Sound Blaster and AdLib audio emulation.
Cons: Requires WebAssembly and JavaScript, and recommends at least 2GB of RAM.
Cons: Internet Explorer is unsupported, while iOS Safari before version 15 has limited WebAssembly support.

Verdict

Choose DosKit if you want a free, installable DOS environment that works across desktop and mobile, can run offline after its first visit, and offers multiple input methods. Look elsewhere if your browser or device cannot meet its compatibility and memory requirements.
