The record

What it does: NOVA is an open-source video player for Android phones, tablets, and Android TV devices.
Local and network playback: It plays videos from local storage, external USB storage, and network shares; it does not provide streaming content.
Network protocols: Supported network sources include SMB, UPnP, FTP, FTPS, SFTP, WebDAV, and WebDAVS.
Library and metadata: NOVA combines video sources in a media library and retrieves movie and TV descriptions, posters, and backdrops through TMDb.
Playback features: The app supports hardware-accelerated decoding, multiple audio and subtitle tracks, subtitle downloads, and manual audio/video synchronization.
TV audio: On supported hardware, NOVA supports AC3/DTS passthrough over HDMI or S/PDIF, plus audio boost and night mode.
Integrations: NOVA supports Trakt for tracking watched content and playback progress, and uses TMDb for media information.
Playback resume: Resume points can be shared across devices through writable network shares or Trakt, which syncs up to the last 100 played entries.
Notable limits: Playback speed is unavailable with audio passthrough, and local file visibility is limited by Android storage restrictions.
Security and privacy: The Google Play data safety section says the developer reports no data collected and no data shared with third parties.
Support: The project directs users to its Reddit community for support and also lists an IRC channel for chatting with developers.
Distribution: The maker lists Google Play, Amazon Appstore, GitHub, IzzyOnDroid, and F-Droid as installation sources.
Who it is for: The maker describes NOVA as a player for people with video files on their Android device or accessible through indexed network shares.
