The record

Purpose: Free open-source desktop search software for full-text search, exploratory search, text analytics and text mining across large document sets.
Setup: The desktop version is distributed as a preconfigured virtual machine appliance imported into VirtualBox, with shared folders pointing to documents.
Indexing: Documents in configured shared folders begin indexing automatically when the virtual machine starts.
Search: Search supports operators including wildcards, Boolean AND/OR/NOT, and fuzzy search.
Semantic search: Multilingual semantic search uses a thesaurus to find synonyms, hyponyms and aliases, and stemming heuristics to find other word forms.
Facets and previews: Interactive facets aggregate metadata such as authors, organizations, people, places, dates, products, tags and document types; previews can show PDFs, extracted text, table rows and images.
Analysis: Analysis and visualization features include date trend charts, word clouds, word lists, network graphs and interactive maps.
Annotations: Users can add tags, categories, names and text notes to documents and filter documents using annotations.
File formats: The product describes support for text, Office and OpenOffice documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, email, CSV, images and videos, among other formats.
Connectors: Documented connectors cover files and directories, RSS feeds, websites, SQL databases including MySQL and PostgreSQL, MediaWiki, and IMAP email.
OCR: OCR can recognize text in image files and graphical content embedded in PDFs, including scanned documents.
Privacy and access control: The maker warns that an unsecured web server or application gives anyone who can reach its IP access to the search engine and indexed content, and documents Apache access restrictions as a mitigation.
Intended users: The desktop virtual machine is described for single users, while the separate server installation is aimed at organizations and research teams.
Notable limitation: The download page lists the German desktop virtual machine as “Coming soon” and provides the multilingual image as a 4 GB download.
