Specifications and picture leaked for Sony C3, might release with MediaTek CPU

Some previous rumors have suggested that Sony is developing an affordable Quad-core MediaTek powered device featuring a 5 inch screen and releasing sometime around the third quarter of the year. According to a recent report by PhoneArena, Sony might be looking to capture the affordable Smartphone market as it leaked the image of the affordable Smartphone codenamed as Sony C3.

The build quality and design of the Smartphone will be inspired from its flagship device, the Xperia Z. MediaTek CPU powered Smartphones are currently selling like hot cakes in China, India and other Asian countries, but they suffer from the problem of having a cheap material and design. The advantage that Sony might bring to the table over the Mediatek’s cousins from Asian countries is that it might bring a more robust and premium looking Smartphone in the affordable Quad core category.

Sony C3

Sony’s C3 is rumored to be powered by MediaTek’s MT6589 Quad core SoC. Some others rumors further suggest that Sony might use the updated 1.5GHz MT6589T. Even though affordable MediaTek powered Smartphones have been released mostly in Asia by homegrown Chinese and Indian brands, Sony being an international brand might bring it to global markets as well, or at least we hope so.

We believe that it might not be a rugged Smartphone as the use of MediaTek processor suggests keeping the price in check and making a phone rugged and qualify the certification might bump up its cost. Sony is one of the few major manufacturer launching rugged flagship phones. Other brands like Samsung and LG are yet to launch a rugged flagship offering. Most rugged phones launched by Samsung and Huawei target mid range segment.

Last week reports were leaked giving indications for another budget Smartphone C190x from Sony. Sony is seen to be aggressively strengthening its offering in all price brackets. It currently has Xperia Tipo and Tipo Dual and Xperia E and E Dual in entry segment price bracket, which seem to be doing really well. The addition of a MediaTek powered device will only widen the options and help it to capture the lucrative and competitive entry level Smartphone market.
