2011 Xperia handsets may get ICS update in January 2012

Sony Ericsson Xperia line up released this year, running on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) may get an Android update to the newest version 4.0 (Ice-cream Sandwich) next month (January 2012). This news comes from a Sony employee named Siddharth Sai G who said that Ice Cream Sandwich should be expected in first week of January for all 2011 Xperia handsets, in his tweet.

The device’s which may get the update are,

  • Xperia Arc
  • Xperia Arc S
  • Xperia Ray
  • Xperia Mini
  • Xperia Mini Pro
  • Xperia Neo
  • Xperia Neo V
  • Xperia Play
  • Xperia Pro
  • Xperia Active
  • Xperia Live with Walkman

There is still confusion about this news, earlier it was said by Sony Ericsson Italy in a Facebook post that, Don’t expect Ice Cream Sandwich update for Xperia lineup before March 2012. Again both these news aren’t from Official Sony Ericsson Product Blog, these are just giving a hint towards the approximate release date for the update.

Xperia 2011 lineup is well capable of running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), many Smartphones from other manufacturers have not received the update yet. But some Chinese manufacturer already have ICS certificate from Google which they have installed on a tablet device not so capable of running Android 4.0. Then why are some popular Smartphones not getting ICS?

It’s not the case, it looks like many manufacturers are already done with developing their phone’s firmware for Ice Cream Sandwich, one among them is Sony Ericsson. These firmware’s are awaiting certification from Google. Once it is done, they will start rolling out updates for the respective devices.

If the news is true, just four weeks to go to get the update. Before that there will be an official announcement from Sony Ericsson on its Official Product Blog and details of the countries and the carriers who will get the update first. Stay tuned with us for more updates about the news.
