AI cover songs are ethically and commercially safe only when you have permission for the source recording, consent for every identifiable voice, and a platform licence that allows your intended release. A generated vocal does not erase the copyright in the composition or recording, and a voice clone does not become authorised because it sounds convincing. Treat consent, attribution, disclosure, and platform terms as separate checks before you upload or monetise a cover.
What Consent Covers In An AI Cover
Get permission from the person whose voice is being cloned or impersonated. This applies to a singer, a collaborator, and anyone whose uploaded vocal becomes a custom model. Keep a written record describing the permitted use, platforms, territory, duration, edits, and whether commercial release is allowed. A tool’s “custom voice” feature is technical permission to process audio; it is not proof that you own the voice or have the singer’s authorisation.
You also need rights for the song itself. The melody, lyrics, arrangement, and sound recording can have different owners. A cover workflow that separates vocals from an uploaded track still uses that underlying work. Obtain the licences required for your release or keep the result private where the applicable rights are not established. Do not assume that a platform’s download button grants those rights.
Disclosure And Platform Rules
Label an AI cover clearly when a real person’s identity or voice could be inferred. Spotify announced that vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist authorised it, and that it supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits. It also announced an “AI Persona” badge for artist identities that may be AI-generated. Read the current distributor and platform rules before publishing because acceptance, takedown, and credit requirements can change.

Spotify also reported removing more than 75 million spammy tracks in the previous 12 months and described a filter for mass uploads and duplicates. A Permission-First Cover Workflow
- Identify the inputs. Write down the composition, the sound recording, every vocal or sample, and the person represented by each voice model.
- Collect consent. Obtain written permission for voice cloning or impersonation, including commercial release, attribution, edits, and distribution platforms.
