For vocal tracks, provide lyrics or a lyric brief plus voice, delivery, structure, and production direction. How Instrumental Prompts Differ From Vocal Prompts
Instrumental Prompts
An instrumental brief must prevent accidental singing while giving the model enough musical structure to build a usable bed. State “instrumental only” near the beginning, then define the role of the track, tempo or energy when useful, lead and supporting instruments, section order, and an intended use such as a loopable background or a cinematic cue. Treat these as creative directions; the supplied product details do not establish exact genre, tempo, duration, or adherence controls.
Example prompt: “Instrumental only, no vocals or spoken words. Tense electronic underscore for a developer conference demo: pulsing analog bass, tight kick and muted percussion, restrained arpeggiated synth, four-bar intro, rising middle section, clean ending for picture edit. Keep the melody sparse so narration remains clear.”
Vocal Prompts
A vocal brief has two layers: the words and the performance. Supply original lyrics or a clear lyric outline, then describe the singer’s delivery, phrasing, emotional arc, section labels, backing vocals, and production. Avoid relying on a named living singer or an uploaded voice unless you have permission; use a voice reference only with the contributor’s consent and follow the platform’s terms.

- COMPLETE VOCAL SETUP: shock mount, pop filter and XLR cable included, add an interface and record
- THE SOUND OF HIT RECORDS: the legendary NT1 large-diaphragm condenser voicing trusted in studios for two decades
- WHISPER-QUIET: among the lowest self-noise microphones ever made, nothing between you and the take
- BUILT FOR VOCALS AND STREAMS: tight cardioid pattern focuses on the voice, rejects the room

Example prompt: “Vocal song with original English lyrics about debugging a difficult release. Intimate lead vocal in the verses, wider harmonies in the chorus, restrained first section, confident final chorus, clear diction, and a short instrumental turnaround between chorus and verse. Keep the arrangement uncluttered under the words.”
Suno Prompt And Workflow Choices
When Suno Fits Instrumentals
Suno generates songs with instrumentation and production, and it can later support remixing, extensions, section replacement, editing, and stem export. That combination suits a creator who wants to turn a first instrumental sketch into several arranged versions. Start with the instrumental exclusion, then describe the section map and the job the music must perform under dialogue, gameplay, or a technical presentation.

When Udio Fits Instrumentals
Udio is prompt-led and can generate instrumental songs from text prompts. Describe the no-vocal constraint, arrangement, and transitions in one compact brief, then use audio transformation or Sessions to refine the result. Its supplied limitations say downloads of audio, video, and stems are disabled during the transition period, so verify export availability before choosing it for a delivery deadline.
When Udio Fits Vocal Tracks
Udio supports songs from prompts and lyrics, lyric editing, voice-reference blending, style shaping, extensions, and transformations. A practical sequence is to establish the lyric and vocal character first, then use Sessions to refine timing or surrounding arrangement. - Confirm commercial permission for the specific plan you used. Suno’s Free Plan excludes commercial rights; Udio’s supplied details describe download restrictions during its transition period but do not establish a commercial-rights grant.
- Use only lyrics, voice references, samples, or cover material you are authorised to submit. Consent from the performer or rights holder does not replace checking each platform’s current terms.
- Check whether you can download the exact deliverable you need. Suno lists stem export with plan limitations, while Udio currently lists stem export as disabled during the transition period.
- For a client handoff, confirm the required format and whether the plan permits that use before generating a large batch.
Which One Should You Choose?
Choose Suno when you need a broader song workspace with mobile apps and listed editing, section replacement, and stem-export workflows. Choose Udio when prompt-led creation, lyric editing, voice-reference blending, and Sessions refinement are the priority and you can work within its current download transition. For either platform, make the instrumental-versus-vocal constraint explicit in the first line of the prompt and verify rights and exports before release.
