Topaz Video is the best dedicated AI upscaler for serious restoration in 2026. It runs locally on Mac and Windows and combines enlargement with denoising, stabilization, restoration and frame interpolation. If you already edit in DaVinci Resolve, Resolve Studio is the better integrated choice because its Neural Engine Super Scale includes documented 3x Enhanced and 4x Enhanced modes. CapCut is the quickest beginner workflow, while Video2X is the strongest open-source route for technically confident users.
No AI upscaler can recover detail that was never captured. Resolution, interlacing, motion blur, noise, compression and focus determine the ceiling. Video-specific temporal processing also matters: a frame-by-frame image model can make invented detail shimmer from frame to frame. Use short previews before committing to a long export, and choose local or cloud processing according to your hardware, privacy and batch-work needs.

Which AI video upscaler is best in 2026?
The right choice depends on the job rather than a single universal score. Dedicated restoration software offers more control than a browser tool; an editor-integrated feature avoids round-tripping; and a playback enhancer is not the same thing as an exporter that creates a new 4K file.
| Product | Best for | Processing | Output or mode | Free/trial and pricing | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Topaz Video | Restoration, denoising and interpolation | Local desktop | Upscaling, stabilization, restoration and frame interpolation | Commercial license; current price, trial and cloud-credit terms change | GPU-intensive; free DaVinci Resolve does not run its plug-in |
| DaVinci Resolve Studio | Editors who want enhancement inside a full NLE | Local desktop | Neural Engine Super Scale, including Studio-only 3x Enhanced and 4x Enhanced | Free Resolve edition exists; Studio is paid; current price should be confirmed | Super Scale is computationally intensive |
| CapCut AI Video Upscaler | Beginners and short projects | CapCut desktop workflow | HD, UHD or 4K enhancement | Plan, export and trial terms vary by account and region | Results remain bounded by the source clip |
| Video2X | Open-source, self-managed processing | Local, user-configured | Machine-learning super-resolution and frame interpolation | Open-source software; no subscription price | Setup, model selection and hardware are your responsibility |
| Adobe Firefly with Topaz Astra | Browser uploads without a local GPU | Cloud/browser | MP4 or MOV upload, export up to 4K | Access, quotas and pricing are subject to Adobe’s current offer | Upload limits, credits and privacy considerations |
| Google Veo upscaling on Vertex AI | API and cloud production pipelines | Google Cloud | Announced enhancement up to 1080p and 4K | Private-preview/public-preview availability and usage pricing vary | Not a generally available consumer desktop tool |
| NVIDIA RTX Video Super Resolution | Improving playback quality while watching video | Local GPU during playback | AI enhancement in supported browsers and VLC | Requires a compatible RTX GPU; no separate editor plan | Playback enhancement does not render an edited master file |
What can AI upscaling actually recover?
An upscaler estimates plausible high-resolution pixels from low-resolution evidence. It can make edges cleaner, reduce block noise and reconstruct texture, but it cannot reliably recreate a face hidden by motion blur or a logo erased by compression. A 480p VHS transfer may become more watchable at 1080p or 4K, yet the output will still carry the softness, head-switching noise and interlacing errors of the tape unless those problems are handled separately.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Motion creates a second challenge. If every frame is enlarged independently, small changes in the invented texture can produce crawling lines, glitter or a watercolor-like shimmer. Video-oriented models attempt to maintain temporal consistency across neighboring frames. Check a moving face, a pan across fine detail, hair, foliage and subtitles in a preview; a still frame alone can look excellent while the sequence flickers.
1. Topaz Video: the dedicated restoration choice
Who it is for: archivists, filmmakers and creators who want a focused desktop application rather than an all-purpose editor.
What it does
Topaz Video combines AI upscaling with denoising, restoration, stabilization and frame interpolation. That combination is useful when an old or heavily compressed clip needs several corrective passes before delivery. Its processing is designed for video rather than a folder of unrelated still images, so temporal behavior is a central part of the workflow.
Platforms, plans and workflow
The application runs on Mac and Windows. It also has a documented plug-in for DaVinci Resolve Studio, allowing enhancement from inside a Resolve timeline; the free Resolve edition does not run that plug-in. It is commercial desktop software. License pricing, any trial, model availability and cloud-credit allowances can change, so confirm the current offer before buying.
Limits to plan around
- Local rendering can place heavy demands on the GPU, system memory and storage, especially when increasing both frame size and frame rate.
- Interpolation creates new frames; fast cuts, occlusions and motion blur can produce warping or duplicate-looking details.
- Upscaling cannot restore information removed by severe focus errors, crushed blacks or damaged tape.
- The Resolve integration requires Studio, not the free edition.
Choose Topaz Video when restoration controls and a repeatable local workflow matter more than an all-in-one edit suite or a browser-only process.
2. DaVinci Resolve Studio: the integrated-editor choice
Who it is for: editors who already cut, color-grade, mix and deliver in Resolve and want enhancement without exporting to another application.
Super Scale modes
Blackmagic Design documents Neural Engine Super Scale for high-quality enlargement. The Resolve 20 New Features Guide adds Studio-only 3x Enhanced and 4x Enhanced modes, with adjustable sharpness and noise reduction. Those controls let you trade crispness against ringing and amplified noise instead of accepting a single fixed look.
Platforms, plans and requirements
Resolve is a desktop editor for Mac and Windows, with a free edition and a paid Studio edition. Super Scale enhancements described here are Studio features. Resolve can use proxies or optimized media while you edit, but the Super Scale calculation itself is computationally intensive. Keep the original media available and reserve time for the final high-resolution render.
Limits to plan around
- Enhanced 3x and 4x processing can be slow on long timelines or high-frame-rate footage.
- Increasing resolution inside a timeline does not fix interlacing, bad white balance or clipped highlights automatically.
- Project settings, timeline scaling and delivery resolution must agree; otherwise you can upscale and then accidentally render a smaller file.
- The free edition is useful for editing, but it does not run the Topaz Video plug-in.
Resolve Studio is the practical pick when your correction, grading and delivery decisions already live in Resolve. It is less attractive if you only need a quick one-off conversion and do not want a full NLE.

3. CapCut AI Video Upscaler: the easiest beginner path
Who it is for: beginners, social creators and short projects where a few guided controls are preferable to model and codec decisions.
Documented enhancement path
CapCut’s desktop instructions use a short sequence: import the clip, open Video > Basic > Enhance quality, choose HD, UHD or 4K, preview the result and export. The tool describes frame analysis, deblurring and reconstructed detail as part of the enhancement process.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Platforms, plans and output
The documented workflow is in CapCut’s desktop editor. HD, UHD and 4K are the named output choices. Account-based plan, trial, export and credit terms can change by region and date, so check the current CapCut offer before starting a large batch.
Limits to plan around
- The simple interface exposes less control over model selection, temporal behavior and noise treatment than a dedicated restoration application.
- Upscaling a noisy phone clip can make compression or sensor noise more visible rather than removing it completely.
- Preview a representative moving section; a clean talking-head frame does not guarantee clean hair, foliage or scrolling text.
- Cloud-assisted features, where offered, can impose upload, account or quota constraints.
CapCut makes sense when speed and simplicity outweigh fine-grained restoration control. It is a convenient first pass for social clips, not a promise that every 480p source will become genuine 4K detail.
4. Video2X: the open-source, self-managed framework
Who it is for: technically confident users who want an open-source pipeline and are willing to configure models, dependencies and hardware themselves.
What the project provides
Video2X documentation describes it as a machine-learning-based lossless video super-resolution and frame-interpolation framework. That makes it a framework for building a workflow rather than a single consumer preset. Users can select and manage the processing components appropriate to their source and output goals.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Platforms, cost and setup reality
It is open-source software with no subscription price. The documentation does not establish a universal quality ranking or a one-click consumer setup. Installation, compatible runtimes, model files, command-line or graphical configuration, and GPU acceleration remain the user’s responsibility.
Limits to plan around
- Hardware requirements vary with the chosen model, scale factor, frame interpolation and source frame rate.
- There is no single guaranteed result; model choice and settings strongly influence sharpness, halos and temporal stability.
- Codec, container and audio handling may require separate tools in a larger pipeline.
- Expect more setup and troubleshooting than with a commercial editor’s Enhance button.
Choose Video2X when control, transparency and avoiding a subscription are more important than a polished onboarding experience. Keep the original files and configuration alongside exports so a successful result can be reproduced.
5. Adobe Firefly with Topaz Astra: browser-based enhancement
Who it is for: creators who prefer uploading a clip in a browser and do not want to maintain a local AI workstation.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Supported workflow
Adobe describes Topaz Astra as a partner model in Firefly. The workflow accepts MP4 or MOV footage in the browser and can export up to 4K. Its stated functions include noise reduction, texture and detail restoration, and enhancement.
Plans, access and limits
Because processing is cloud-based, the important constraints are account access, upload size, processing quotas, credits and retention or privacy policy. Adobe’s current access and pricing can change, so confirm availability and the number of included generations before uploading a long archive.
- A browser upload requires enough bandwidth and time to transfer the source before processing begins.
- Large masters may need to be split or compressed to meet current upload rules.
- Cloud processing is a poor fit for footage that cannot leave a local storage system.
- Exporting at 4K does not guarantee that the source contained 4K-level information.
Astra is a useful option when convenience and remote compute outweigh local control, especially for a short MP4 or MOV that needs a quick enhancement pass.
6. Google Veo upscaling on Vertex AI: an API-oriented cloud option
Who it is for: developers, media teams and cloud pipelines that need an enhancement capability exposed through Google Cloud rather than a desktop timeline.
What Google announced
Google announced a standalone Veo capability for enhancing existing footage to up to 1080p and 4K. The announcement described the feature as being in private preview and coming to public preview, so it should not be treated as a generally available consumer application without checking the current Vertex AI status.
Recommended Free Tools
Plans and operational constraints
Vertex AI usage is metered cloud consumption rather than a perpetual desktop license. Preview access, quotas, supported regions, API limits and per-use pricing can change. A production pipeline also needs authentication, storage, job monitoring and a way to validate that the returned file retains the required frame rate, audio and metadata.
Limits to plan around
- Private-preview access may require enrollment and may not be available in every account or region.
- Cloud transfer time and storage charges add to the apparent processing cost.
- An API enhancement service is not a replacement for editing, color correction or archival restoration controls.
- Do not promise clients a Veo-based workflow until the capability is enabled for the intended project.
Veo is most relevant when engineering teams already automate media jobs in Google Cloud. For a single home video, a desktop application is usually simpler.
7. NVIDIA RTX Video Super Resolution: playback enhancement, not a mastering editor
Who it is for: PC viewers who want cleaner video playback in supported software and creators deciding whether an RTX GPU can accelerate a local workflow.
How RTX VSR works
NVIDIA describes RTX Video Super Resolution as AI upscaling that uses RTX Tensor Cores to improve video played on a PC, including in a browser such as Chrome or a player such as VLC. It is designed to remove compression artifacts and improve the displayed image while you watch.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Hardware and compatibility
NVIDIA documents support for Turing-based RTX GPUs, including the RTX 20-series generation. A compatible GeForce RTX card is therefore a task-enabling hardware choice for local AI video work, but the exact performance depends on the card, driver, player and source.
Limits to plan around
- RTX VSR changes playback; it does not by itself export a new restored master file.
- It cannot fix a source that is interlaced, out of focus or missing frames.
- Tensor-Core processing still shares the GPU with games, 3D applications or other encoders.
- Browser and VLC support must be configured correctly, and behavior can vary with driver and player versions.
Think of RTX VSR as a viewing layer and a reason to consider RTX hardware, not as a substitute for Topaz Video, Resolve Studio or an export-capable cloud service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I choose an AI video upscaler?
Start with the deliverable, then eliminate tools that cannot meet its processing, privacy or control requirements. The following questions narrow the field quickly.
Do you need a new file or only better playback?
For a permanently enlarged export, use Topaz Video, Resolve Studio, CapCut, Video2X, Firefly or an enabled Veo pipeline. RTX Video Super Resolution is appropriate when the goal is simply to watch supported video more clearly; it does not create a deliverable master.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do you already edit in a specific application?
Resolve users should begin with Resolve Studio’s Super Scale so timeline edits, color and audio remain in one project. Topaz Video’s plug-in is an alternative for Studio users who need its dedicated restoration models. CapCut is the shorter path for creators already assembling social videos there.
Can your computer handle local rendering?
Local enhancement avoids uploading sensitive footage and gives you control over files and repeatability, but it consumes GPU time, RAM and storage. Super Scale is explicitly computationally intensive, and dedicated models or interpolation can be heavier still. Use proxies or optimized media while editing, then render the final enhancement with the original source attached.
If you lack a suitable GPU, a browser or cloud option shifts the compute elsewhere. That convenience comes with upload time, account quotas, possible credits and a requirement to review privacy and retention terms.
What condition is the source in?
- Clean 1080p with mild softness: a modest scale factor and low noise reduction usually preserve a natural look better than an aggressive 4K setting.
- 480p or VHS: deinterlace first when necessary, remove obvious tape noise, then upscale a short representative section. Expect improved presentation rather than recovered original detail.
- Highly compressed web video: test subtitles, sharp diagonals and moving backgrounds for ringing and shimmer.
- Fast action: inspect occlusions and motion-blurred edges; interpolation can introduce warps or duplicate limbs.
- Archive material: keep an untouched master, a lightly processed preservation copy and a delivery version with documented settings.
Do you need batch processing or an API?
Desktop applications are more practical for a handful of clips and visual review. Video2X can fit a scripted, self-managed pipeline, while Vertex AI is aimed at cloud/API automation. Browser tools are convenient for individual uploads but may be constrained by quotas and file-size limits.

- Preserve the source. Make a verified copy of the original file or tape capture. Never overwrite it with an AI export.
- Inspect technical defects. Check frame rate, interlacing, variable frame rate, audio sync, cropping and codec before choosing a model.
- Pick a short test segment. Include a face, fine texture, motion, subtitles and a dark area. A static close-up alone hides temporal problems.
- Correct the biggest defect first. Deinterlace interlaced material, stabilize severe shake and reduce extreme noise before asking the model to invent detail.
- Choose a restrained scale. Try 2x or the nearest practical output before jumping to 4K. More pixels do not mean more factual detail.
- Preview at full size and in motion. Look for halos, plastic skin, crawling texture, ringing around text and frame-to-frame flicker.
- Render a short final-quality sample. Confirm color, audio, frame rate, subtitles and export codec on the actual delivery platform.
- Batch only after approval. Save the model, scale, denoise, sharpness and interpolation settings with the project so every clip is traceable.
What hardware and storage matter most?
An RTX GPU with Tensor Cores can accelerate compatible local AI workloads, and NVIDIA identifies Turing-based RTX cards, including the RTX 20 series, as supporting RTX Video Super Resolution. That compatibility does not establish a single recommended card for every upscaler: model size, output dimensions, frame rate and whether interpolation is enabled all change the load.

Plan for temporary storage as well as the final export. A 4K intermediate, image sequence or multiple model passes can consume several times the source size. Keep free space for caches, proxies and a failed render, and avoid placing the only copy of irreplaceable footage on the same drive as temporary files.
How should I judge an upscale before paying or rendering?
Use the vendor’s current trial, preview or short-export allowance when available, but judge the moving result rather than a single enlarged frame. Compare the same ten-to-thirty-second segment at native size, the proposed output and a conservative alternative. Record whether the model changes faces, text, film grain and motion edges in ways that are unacceptable for your audience.
Also check the final container and codec. A visually good upscale can be undermined by an export that drops audio, changes frame rate, introduces banding or exceeds the destination platform’s limits. Keep a high-quality master and make platform-specific derivatives afterward.

Can I upscale 480p or old VHS footage to 4K?
Yes, the listed tools can produce a 4K-sized file from a 480p source, but the result is an estimate rather than recovered tape detail. Deinterlacing, tracking-noise cleanup and a restrained sharpening pass are often more important than choosing the largest output setting.
Which AI upscaler works inside DaVinci Resolve?
DaVinci Resolve Studio includes Neural Engine Super Scale, with 3x Enhanced and 4x Enhanced modes documented in the Resolve 20 guide. Topaz Video also documents a plug-in for Resolve Studio; the free Resolve edition does not run that plug-in.
Can I upscale video online without a GPU?
Browser and cloud choices such as Firefly’s Topaz Astra workflow and Google’s Vertex AI capability move computation to remote servers. You still need sufficient upload bandwidth and must account for quotas, credits, preview availability and the privacy implications of sending footage to a cloud service.
Why does my upscaled video shimmer or flicker?
Frame-by-frame detail invention can change slightly on every frame, especially in hair, foliage, brickwork and subtitles. Use a video model with temporal handling, reduce aggressive sharpening, and inspect a moving preview before rendering the entire project.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is RTX Video Super Resolution an editor or exporter?
No. RTX Video Super Resolution improves playback in supported browsers and VLC using RTX Tensor Cores; it is not a timeline editor and does not create a new restored master file. Use an export-capable application when you need a file to upload or archive.
