Shutter Encoder is the best overall HandBrake alternative for most people in 2026. It keeps a straightforward graphical workflow while adding trimming, subtitle tools, overlays, color conversion and other FFmpeg-powered operations. Choose FFmpeg when you need scripts or server automation, VidCoder for a focused Windows queue, LosslessCut when you only need to cut or join compatible files without re-encoding, and MakeMKV when the first job is extracting video from an owned DVD or Blu-ray. Adobe Media Encoder is the specialist choice for Premiere Pro and After Effects workflows.
These programs are not interchangeable. Some transcode, some remux, some extract discs, and some are production-pipeline tools. The right choice depends on whether you need compression, editing, automation, disc ingest or Adobe integration.

- Transcoding: creates a new encoded file, useful for reducing size or changing codec and resolution.
- Remuxing: changes the container without re-encoding compatible streams, so quality is preserved and processing is quick.
- Lossless cutting: removes sections while copying existing streams; cut accuracy depends on codec and keyframes.
- Disc extraction: reads a DVD or Blu-ray and copies its content to a computer before any compression step.
- Automation: repeats a known process through commands, queues, watch folders or scripts.
Confusing these categories causes most disappointment. A lossless cutter cannot turn a 40 GB disc rip into a small phone file, and a transcoder is unnecessary when you only need to remove the first minute of a recording.
1. Shutter Encoder: best free all-round graphical alternative
Shutter Encoder describes itself as “A converter designed by video editors.” It uses FFmpeg, giving it support for almost every codec handled by that underlying toolkit while presenting a graphical interface.
What it does
Use it for ordinary conversion, codec changes, compression, subtitle work and a wide range of editorial preparation. The documented tools include trimming, a “Cut without re-encoding” mode for some codecs, subtitle embedding and burn-in, a subtitle editor, cropping, overlays and watermarks, color adjustment, LUTs, color-space conversion, duplicate-frame detection, frame-rate interpolation, analysis and deinterlacing.
Platforms, cost and standout features
Desktop builds are available for Windows, macOS and Linux. The application is free to download and use; no subscription or paid tier is identified for its core feature set. Version 20.4 is the current version identified for this comparison.
The advantage over a narrowly focused transcoder is breadth. You can prepare subtitles, convert color spaces, remove duplicate frames or deinterlace in the same application instead of moving between utilities. Its FFmpeg foundation also makes it suitable for unusual containers and professional interchange tasks.
Limits
The same breadth makes the interface more complex than HandBrake’s preset-led workflow. “Cut without re-encoding” is conditional: unsupported codecs or cut points require a normal encode. Hardware-encoder behavior depends on the codec and hardware exposed by your system.
2. FFmpeg: best for scripts, servers and exact control
FFmpeg is a collection of libraries and tools for processing multimedia, including audio, video, subtitles and metadata. The ffmpeg command converts, filters, manipulates and streams media; ffprobe inspects streams and metadata.

FFmpeg can perform nearly any operation HandBrake exposes and many it does not: explicit stream mapping, filter graphs, metadata rules, remuxing, image-sequence work, subtitle processing and automated delivery jobs. It is the strongest option when a process must be reproducible on a server or integrated into another application.
Platforms, cost and examples
Builds are available across Windows, macOS and Linux, with additional supported platforms through community and vendor packages. FFmpeg is free and open source.
A basic H.264 conversion can be scripted as:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4Use ffprobe input.mkv first when you need to see codecs, language tags, chapters or stream layout. The exact command should match your delivery target; a copied stream that is valid in MKV may not be accepted by an MP4 player.
Limits
There is no beginner-oriented timeline or preset wizard. A wrong codec, filter, stream map or container combination can produce an unusable file, and command syntax must be maintained in scripts. Hardware encoding is available through builds and codecs that support it, but it is not a universal speed or quality guarantee.

3. VidCoder: best focused Windows GUI
VidCoder is an open-source DVD/Blu-ray ripping and video-transcoding application for Windows. It uses HandBrake as its encoding engine, so it offers a different interface and queue workflow around the same core encoder rather than an independent codec stack.
What it does
Its feature list includes MP4 and MKV output; AV1, H.265, H.264 and other codecs; AMD VCE, Nvidia NVENC and Intel Quick Sync hardware encoding; target bitrate, target size and quality controls; multi-pass encoding; batch and simultaneous encodes; folder watching; subtitle and audio pickers; previews; pause and resume; and integrated processing without huge intermediate files.
Platforms, cost and versions
VidCoder runs on Windows and is free and open source. The project identifies stable version 12.23 and beta version 13.13. No paid plan is required for the documented application.
Limits
VidCoder does not defeat commercial-disc encryption. For protected discs, use an appropriate disc-ingest tool for media you own, then transcode the resulting file. Hardware options appear only when the relevant GPU or integrated graphics, drivers and codec expose them; selecting NVENC, Quick Sync or AMD VCE does not guarantee a particular speed or quality result.
4. Avidemux: best for a quick single-file edit
Avidemux is a free video editor aimed at simple cutting, filtering and encoding rather than multitrack production. It supports AVI, DVD-compatible MPEG, MP4, ASF and other formats.
What it does
For a short recording that needs unwanted sections removed, a basic filter applied or a new encode made, Avidemux keeps the workflow compact. Project files, a job queue and scripting are documented, allowing repeatable operations without adopting a full nonlinear editor.
Platforms, cost and release context
Avidemux has desktop versions for Windows, macOS and Linux and is free to use. The latest-news entries identified for the project are version 2.8.1 dated September 23, 2022, and version 2.8.0 dated December 28, 2021; those dates should not be presented as a 2026 release.

It is designed for straightforward, single-file work. It does not replace a timeline editor for layered video, complex audio mixing, effects-heavy projects or collaborative finishing. Output choices and filter compatibility depend on the source format.
5. LosslessCut: best for cutting and joining without re-encoding
LosslessCut calls itself “The swiss army knife of lossless video/audio editing.” It is built around FFmpeg and focuses on operations that copy existing streams instead of encoding them again.
What it does
Use it to trim, split or join compatible video and audio files when preserving the original quality and avoiding a long encode matters more than frame-perfect editing. Because it remuxes rather than recompresses, it is useful for removing adverts from a recording, extracting a segment or joining matching clips.
Platforms and cost
Desktop releases are available for Windows, macOS and Linux. The project is free and open source.

Limits
Lossless operation is conditional. Many compressed video formats can only cut cleanly at keyframes, and joining files with incompatible codecs, time bases, resolutions or audio layouts may fail or require re-encoding. It is not a general-purpose compression tool: use a transcoder when the output must be smaller, use a different codec or meet a device compatibility target.

6. MakeMKV: best first step for owned DVD and Blu-ray discs
MakeMKV is designed to convert video that you own into a format that can be played broadly. It reads DVDs and Blu-rays while preserving video and audio tracks, chapters and metadata, then writes them to MKV.
What it does
Disc opening is free, and all features—including Blu-ray decryption and processing—are free during the beta period identified by the project. Conversion speed is mainly limited by the optical drive’s read speed. The output is an archival extraction, not an automatically compressed file.

- Open the disc in MakeMKV and select the title, video, audio and subtitle tracks you need.
- Write the selected content to an MKV file.
- Open that MKV in HandBrake, Shutter Encoder, FFmpeg or VidCoder if you need a smaller or more widely compatible delivery encode.
An external USB Blu-ray drive is the relevant accessory for computers without an optical drive. The hardware reads discs; it does not itself defeat copy protection.
Limits
MakeMKV is specialized for disc ingest. Its large MKV output can require substantial storage, and you still need a separate transcoder for compression, codec conversion or a phone-ready file. Use it only with media you are authorized to copy.
7. XMedia Recode: best Windows option for detailed tuning
XMedia Recode is a Windows converter for users who want extensive parameter controls alongside batch processing and hardware acceleration.
What it does
The documented format list includes H.264, HEVC/H.265, SVT-AV1, MKV and MP4, along with broad audio support. It offers AMD, Nvidia and Intel GPU acceleration, cutting, rotating, scaling, subtitle addition and extraction, audio extraction, and batch conversion. It can convert unprotected DVDs and Blu-rays.

Platforms, cost and version
XMedia Recode runs on Windows and is freeware. The project lists version 3.6.4.1 in an update dated September 26, 2026.
Limits
Copy-protected discs are explicitly unsupported. GPU acceleration depends on the installed hardware, drivers, selected codec and quality target. The abundance of controls is useful for experienced users but can be less approachable than a small set of HandBrake presets.

Limits
If you only need occasional conversion, the subscription and production-oriented interface add cost and complexity. Its strengths appear when projects already live in Adobe applications or when a team needs standardized presets, watch folders, proxies and publishing destinations.

Choose by operation
- Pick Shutter Encoder for a graphical tool that combines conversion with subtitles, color work, deinterlacing and editorial utilities.
- Pick FFmpeg when the same command must run repeatedly on a server, in a script or inside an application.
- Pick LosslessCut for compatible cuts and joins where re-encoding would waste time or reduce quality.
- Pick MakeMKV when the source is an owned DVD or Blu-ray and you first need a computer-readable MKV.
- Pick VidCoder or XMedia Recode when you want Windows queues, hardware-encoder choices and a graphical interface.
- Pick Avidemux for a quick, uncomplicated cut or filter on one file.

Check your platform
Windows users have every option in this list. macOS and Linux users should narrow the list to projects that publish builds for their operating system; VidCoder and XMedia Recode are Windows choices, while the other desktop tools listed here provide broader platform coverage. Adobe Media Encoder supports Windows and macOS, not Linux.
Decide whether hardware encoding matters
VidCoder and XMedia Recode expose AMD, Nvidia or Intel hardware encoders. The required codec must be supported by the GPU or integrated graphics, the drivers must be available, and the selected quality target must suit hardware encoding. Hardware acceleration is therefore a compatibility decision, not a universal promise of faster or better output. FFmpeg and Shutter Encoder can also use supported FFmpeg hardware paths, but the available encoders depend on the installed build and system.
Plan storage for disc workflows
Disc extraction creates a large intermediate or archival file. Keep enough free space for the MKV before starting a later encode, and retain the original extraction if you may need a different audio, subtitle or chapter selection in the future.
