The best MP3-to-text converter in 2026 depends on what you need after the upload. Otter.ai is the strongest fit for meeting notes and imported MP3s; Descript is better when the transcript is also your audio or video editing surface; Sonix suits multilingual files and occasional pay-as-you-go work; Rev is the choice when a human must check the words; Happy Scribe is built for subtitles, translation, and proofreading; Notta targets multilingual meetings and interviews; and Riverside provides the simplest free MP3 upload workflow.

There is no universal accuracy winner. Vendor percentages are not comparable benchmarks because companies test different languages, recording conditions, models, and datasets. Use the comparison below to narrow the field, then run a representative clip containing your real accents, names, numbers, and background noise before committing to a plan.

What should you look for in an MP3 transcription service?

Start with the job, not a headline accuracy number. A meeting bot organizes a conversation differently from a subtitle editor, while a human transcription service charges for a level of review that automated tools do not provide.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose the output before the tool

  • Meeting notes: Look for searchable transcripts, summaries, action items, and speaker labels. Otter and Notta are designed around this workflow.
  • Podcast or video editing: A transcript-linked editor such as Descript can remove words from the media when you remove them from the text.
  • Plain text from a file: Sonix, Riverside, and the upload modes of the other services keep the process focused on importing, correcting, and exporting.
  • Captions and translated versions: Happy Scribe and Riverside offer subtitle-oriented exports; Happy Scribe adds translation and optional human proofreading.
  • High-stakes wording: Rev’s human service costs more but is intended for cases where an AI draft is not sufficient.

Compare limits at your real monthly volume

A free allowance can look generous until a per-conversation or per-import cap blocks the file you actually need. Otter’s Free plan allows 300 transcription minutes each month, but each conversation is capped at 30 minutes and only three audio or video files can be imported over the life of the account. Notta offers 120 minutes monthly, yet its Free conversation limit is three minutes. Descript’s Free plan provides one media hour monthly, while Riverside’s free uploader has no signup requirement but treats multi-speaker uploads as one speaker.

Check language, accents, and diarization separately

A published language count is only a starting point. “54+ languages” at Sonix, “58” at Notta, and “100+ languages and dialects” at Riverside are not equivalent measurements: one vendor may count dialects, another may count transcription models, and support can vary by feature. Test the exact language and accent in your recording. Speaker identification should also be checked with overlapping speech, interruptions, and people who have similar voices.

Price the complete job

Automated transcription is normally priced by minutes, hours, or a subscription allowance. Sonix lists $10 per audio hour pay-as-you-go, which can be economical for irregular work; its Core plan starts at $25 per month with five hours for recurring use. Rev’s $0.25 AI minute is a different service from its $1.99 human minute. Add translation, subtitle production, proofreading, extra storage, or overage charges before comparing totals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review privacy and retention before uploading

An MP3 may contain customer information, unreleased interviews, health data, or confidential business discussion. Read the provider’s current security, retention, deletion, and training-use terms and compare them with your organization’s policy. A free account is not automatically suitable for sensitive recordings, and exporting a transcript does not necessarily delete the original audio.

1. Otter.ai: best for meetings and imported MP3s

Otter is the most natural choice when an MP3 is a meeting, lecture, interview, or conversation and the useful result is more than a block of text. Its import tool accepts audio and video from a computer or mobile device and lists MP3, AAC, M4A, WAV, WMA, and OGG among supported audio formats. The maximum imported file size is 5 GB.

After transcription, Otter can produce searchable notes, summaries, action items, and outlines. That makes it practical for turning a recorded meeting into follow-up work rather than manually scanning a transcript. The documented access model is computer or mobile import into Otter’s automatic transcription workspace.

Free plan and limits

The Free plan is reported at 300 transcription minutes per month and six supported languages. It also imposes a 30-minute conversation cap and allows only three lifetime audio or video imports. Those limits matter more than the monthly minute figure if you plan to process repeated interviews or long lectures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should choose it?

Choose Otter for recurring meeting notes, searchable archives, and short imported files where summaries and action items save time. Choose another service for a series of long MP3s, a one-off file that exceeds the conversation cap, or a workflow that requires subtitle translation or human proofreading.

2. Descript: best for editing after transcription

Descript treats the transcript as the editing surface for the underlying audio or video. Uploading creates an automatic transcript; deleting words in that transcript edits the media. Speaker identification, captions, and cleanup are part of the same creator workflow, so you can move from a spoken recording to a polished podcast or video without switching to a separate text editor.

Free plan, languages, and price

Descript’s Free plan includes one media hour per month. Its published Hobbyist plan starts at $16 per person per month when billed annually, and the comparison lists 25 transcription languages. The free allowance is measured in media hours, not a large pool of short conversations, so a single long project can consume most of it.

Who should choose it?

Choose Descript when the transcript is the first step in cutting a podcast, interview, tutorial, or video. Its text-based editing is unnecessary overhead if you only need a TXT file from an MP3 and do not plan to alter the media. For creators, however, removing filler words or a bad take by editing text can be more useful than a standalone transcription export.

3. Sonix: best for multilingual uploaded files

Sonix is built around uploading an audio or video file, reviewing the result in a browser, and correcting it with word-level timestamps and speaker identification. That file-first design suits interviews, research recordings, webinars, and other MP3s that are already finished rather than live meetings that need a bot.

Languages, trial, and pricing

The vendor figure reported for Sonix is 54+ transcription languages. A 30-minute trial lets you evaluate the workflow on a short sample. Pay-as-you-go pricing is reported at $10 per audio hour, while the Core subscription starts at $25 per month and includes five hours. Translation and additional services can raise the final bill.

Who should choose it?

Choose Sonix when you handle multiple languages, process files irregularly, or prefer an hourly bill instead of a recurring seat. Its browser transcript, timestamps, and speaker identification are useful for editing a long file. Compare the hourly total with a subscription if your monthly volume becomes predictable.

4. Rev: best when a human checks the transcript

Rev separates automated transcription from a human-reviewed service. The AI option is reported at $0.25 per minute, while human transcription is $1.99 per minute with a 99%+ accuracy guarantee claimed by Rev. The difference is substantial, but so is the intended use: a human pass is aimed at wording that cannot be left to an unreviewed draft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free allowance and quality choice

Rev’s reported free tier includes 45 AI minutes per month. Use the AI service for routine recordings or as a first draft, then reserve human transcription for legal material, research interviews, proper names, figures, quotations, or any record that needs an accountable review step.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Who should choose it?

Choose Rev when the cost of correcting a mistake is higher than the per-minute fee. For a large archive of casual conversations, the human rate can become expensive quickly; for a short, consequential statement, paying for review may be the more economical decision.

5. Notta: best for multilingual meetings and interviews

Notta combines uploaded-file transcription with live meeting workflows. Its feature set includes speaker identification, search, and exports on paid plans, so it can serve both a recorded MP3 and a meeting that is captured as it happens. The comparison lists 58 transcription languages.

Free plan and Pro pricing

Notta Free is reported at 120 minutes per month, but each Free conversation is limited to three minutes. That makes the free account useful for short clips and evaluation rather than full interviews. Pro starts at $8.17 per month when billed annually.

Who should choose it?

Choose Notta when multilingual meetings, interviews, speaker search, and a mixture of live and uploaded audio are central to the workflow. If you need to process long MP3 files without splitting them into very short segments, examine the paid plan’s current file and conversation limits before uploading a large archive.

6. Happy Scribe: best for subtitles, translation, and proofreading

Happy Scribe combines AI transcription with subtitle creation, translation, automatic speaker detection, and an optional human proofreading service. It is a better fit for published captions or translated media than a simple notes app because the workflow is designed around timed text and editorial review.

Trial and pricing

The reported AI file trial is 10 minutes. The Basic plan starts at $8.50 per month when billed annually, and human proofreading starts at $2 per minute. Treat those as separate cost layers: an AI transcript, a translated subtitle file, and a proofread version are different deliverables.

Who should choose it?

Choose Happy Scribe for multilingual MP3 transcription that will become subtitles, translated captions, or a publication-ready transcript. If you only want searchable meeting notes, Otter or Notta may provide a more direct workflow. Confirm the current language, subtitle-format, and proofreading options for your target market before purchase.

7. Riverside: best free MP3 upload option

Riverside offers a straightforward file-upload path: it accepts MP3, WAV, MP4, and MOV, provides free transcription without signup, and exports TXT or SRT. Riverside states that it supports more than 100 languages and dialects, including different accents and regional pronunciations.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Free workflow and speaker limitation

The important limitation is speaker handling. A free multi-speaker upload assigns all text to one speaker, so the transcript will not provide useful diarization for a roundtable or interview. Use a paid recording workflow when separating speakers is essential.

Paid plan and creator features

Paid plans start at $24 per month and include unlimited automatic transcription, speaker detection, text-based editing, and audio cleanup. That combination is aimed at podcast and video creators who want to edit spoken content as text after recording, not merely download a raw transcript.

Who should choose it?

Choose Riverside for a quick, no-signup MP3-to-TXT or MP3-to-SRT conversion, especially when you are testing a short clip. Choose a paid plan or another service when accurate multi-speaker separation is required on an uploaded file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I convert an MP3 to text?

The exact buttons differ, but the reliable process is the same across these services.

  1. Prepare a representative clip. Use a section that contains the real speakers, accents, names, numbers, and background conditions in your archive. A perfectly clean excerpt can hide problems that appear in the full recording.
  2. Check the file and account limits. Confirm MP3 is accepted, note the maximum file size, and check per-conversation or monthly-minute caps. Otter documents a 5 GB imported-file maximum; Riverside accepts MP3 directly.
  3. Upload or import the file. In an upload service, select the MP3 from your computer or mobile device, then choose the source language and any speaker or subtitle options offered.
  4. Wait for the automatic draft. Processing time varies with file length, traffic, language, and service. Do not treat an instant preview or a short trial clip as proof that a long recording will be equally clean.
  5. Review names, numbers, and speaker changes first. These errors are easy to miss when reading quickly and can change the meaning of an interview or meeting. Use timestamps to jump back to the audio.
  6. Correct the transcript or edit the media. Sonix and other browser editors let you revise text; Descript also changes the underlying audio or video when you edit the transcript.
  7. Export the format your next tool needs. Choose plain text for notes, SRT for captions, or the service’s available document format for publication. Keep the original MP3 alongside the edited transcript.
  8. Delete or retain uploads according to policy. After export, review the provider’s retention controls and your organization’s rules for confidential recordings.

Why do MP3 transcripts contain mistakes?

Recording quality is often more important than the file extension. Otter’s help guidance identifies background noise, people speaking at once, poor microphone quality, and low recording volume as causes of reduced transcript quality. An MP3 encoded at a higher bitrate cannot restore words that were never captured clearly.

Use a repeatable quality check

  • Measure word accuracy on a representative passage, not a vendor’s sample sentence.
  • Check proper names, product names, numbers, dates, and technical terms separately from ordinary words.
  • Compare speaker labels during interruptions and overlapping speech.
  • Verify that timestamps land close enough to the spoken words for editing or captioning.
  • Export a short file in the format you plan to deliver and inspect line breaks, punctuation, and character handling.
  • Calculate the total monthly cost at your expected minutes, including translation, proofreading, overages, and subscriptions.

Accuracy percentages advertised by vendors are claims made under their own test conditions, not a common independent benchmark. A short trial using your own MP3 is the fairest way to compare two finalists.

Which converter should you choose?

Use this decision path when two products appear to fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Meeting notes and action items: Start with Otter. Move to Notta if the meeting team needs broader language coverage or a mix of live and uploaded conversations.
  • Editing a podcast or video: Start with Descript or Riverside, where text-based editing is part of the creator workflow.
  • One multilingual file: Start with Sonix for pay-as-you-go billing, or Happy Scribe if subtitles and translation are part of the deliverable.
  • Publication, legal, or research accuracy: Use Rev’s human option for the portions where an AI draft cannot be trusted without review.
  • Free, no-signup conversion: Try Riverside, remembering that free multi-speaker uploads do not separate speakers.
  • Large recurring volume: Compare the allowance and overage math for a paid subscription rather than choosing on the free tier alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transcribe an MP3 recorded on my phone?

Yes. Otter documents importing audio from a computer or mobile device, and Riverside accepts MP3 uploads directly. Move the file to the service’s supported upload path, then check the conversation or file-size limit before starting a long transcription.

Are language counts directly comparable between services?

No. One provider may count dialects while another counts transcription languages or models, and a language can perform differently across meetings, interviews, and noisy recordings. Compare a short clip in the exact language and accent you need rather than selecting the largest published number.

When is pay-as-you-go cheaper than a subscription?

Pay-as-you-go usually wins when your files arrive irregularly or your monthly volume is below a subscription allowance. Sonix lists $10 per audio hour without a recurring seat, while its Core plan starts at $25 for five hours; calculate your expected hours and include any translation or extra-service charges.

Should I pay for human transcription for every MP3?

No. Use automated transcription for routine notes and drafts, then direct human review to passages where names, numbers, quotations, legal wording, or research findings must be exact. Rev’s reported $1.99-per-minute human rate is materially higher than its $0.25 AI rate, so selective use controls cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I improve results from a noisy recording?

Choose the clearest section for your initial comparison, make sure speech is loud enough, and avoid judging a service from a clip with no overlap if the full file contains interruptions. For future recordings, a better microphone improves the source audio; it cannot repair words already missing from an existing MP3.
