How do you remove vocals from an MP3?

Backing vocals may overlap the lead in frequency, sit in stereo ambience or be blended with instruments through reverb and compression. Those shared elements are difficult for any separator to classify, and Audacity specifically warns about backing vocals, reverb tails and stereo-widened effects.
Can I upload a commercial song to an online vocal remover?
Uploading a track for private processing is different from publishing the result. Before sharing a karaoke file, remix or video, check the permissions needed for the sound recording and composition in your country; vocal removal does not transfer those rights.
