Overview

Song Cage brings chord, melody, lyric and music-theory tools into a shared songwriting workspace, with a distinct role for its web, desktop and mobile versions. It is best suited to writers who want theory-aware composition tools and a path into a supported DAW; the phone app is for capturing ideas, not finishing songs.

Its strongest case is the combination of context-ranked chord suggestions, lyric aids and DAW MIDI integration. The trade-off is that the free web plan stops at one song, while mobile lacks the full editor and export; the broader workflow requires a one-time licence.

Key features

Chord, melody and lyric work

The chord palette spans diatonic and borrowed chords, secondary dominants, extensions and modulation routes. Suggestions are ranked against the melody and neighboring chords, which makes the tool more useful for developing a progression in context than browsing isolated chord options. Melody tools are included, alongside playback and audio recording on the free plan.

The lyric workspace offers perfect and slant rhymes, synonyms, semantic suggestions, and a verb-and-noun generator. Song Cage says it does not use AI to write songs: chord suggestions follow music-theory rules, and word tools use dictionary lookups. Writers seeking generated lyrics or AI composition should look elsewhere.

DAW connection

The AU/VST3 plugin streams chord and melody MIDI in sync with the DAW transport and saves songs inside the DAW project. It supports Logic Pro, GarageBand, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Cubase, Reaper and Studio One, but not Pro Tools AAX in this version. That makes it a practical fit for writers working in those environments, but a poor choice for a Pro Tools-centered setup.

Privacy and account retention

Song Cage says it does not sell personal data or use song content to train AI models, and excludes song content from diagnostic telemetry. Its services include Supabase, Stripe and PayPal, Google OAuth, PowerSync, Datamuse, Cloudflare, Sentry and optional PostHog usage statistics. For dormant accounts without an active subscription or trial, cloud audio recordings and captured Ideas inbox items may be removed after 12 months of inactivity, with at least 30 days' warning; songs are not covered by that removal.

Pricing

Song Cage is freemium, with a free plan and a 14-day trial. The Free plan is free, requires no card and allows one song in the web app. It includes the chord palette, voicings and modulation, word tools, playback, audio recording, song-file export and view-only share links. The single-song cap makes it suitable for trying the workflow or keeping one active project, but not for building a larger catalogue.

The Song Cage licence costs 99.00 USD per once, billed as a one-time $99 payment. It adds unlimited songs, PDF chord sheets, MIDI export, Mac and Windows desktop apps, the AU/VST3 plugin, phone captures in the Ideas inbox, collaborators and web/desktop sync. It suits writers who need several projects, a desktop workflow or DAW integration; those who only need occasional mobile capture can stay with the free app, while writers who need more than one web song must upgrade.

The maker offers a full refund within 30 days by email. Support is available through the contact form or at support@songcage.com.

Platforms

Song Cage is available on web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android. The native desktop app supports macOS 12 or later on Apple Silicon or Intel, and 64-bit x64 Windows 10 or later; it works offline. The free iPhone and Android apps capture voice memos, lyrics and chord ideas offline without an account, but do not include the full editor, timeline, export or DAW. Mobile is therefore a companion for collecting ideas, not a substitute for the desktop or web songwriting workspace.

Who it's for

Song Cage is a strong fit for songwriters who want chord and word tools in one workspace, work across desktop and mobile, or move chord and melody MIDI into one of its supported DAWs. Its offline desktop app also suits writers who need to work without a connection. It is less suitable for mobile-first users who expect a complete editor on their phone, Pro Tools users who need AAX support, or writers looking for AI-generated songs.

Pros and cons

Pros: Chord suggestions account for melody and neighboring chords, giving theory-led writers more relevant options.
Pros: The plugin sends chord and melody MIDI in DAW transport sync and stores songs in the DAW project.
Pros: The one-time licence adds unlimited songs, desktop apps and plugin access without a recurring subscription.
Cons: The free web plan permits only one song, limiting its usefulness for ongoing multi-song work.
Cons: Mobile is capture-only and lacks the full editor, timeline and export.
Cons: Pro Tools AAX is not supported in this version.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Songwriting Software. Songkeeper Studio is a mobile-focused alternative with a free five-song tier and a Pro plan at 0.99 USD per month. Songzap is another iOS and macOS option, with a free plan centered on multitrack recording, arrangement and mixing tools.

Suno offers a free plan with daily credits and a paid Pro plan for 8.00 USD per month, making it an alternative to consider for a different songwriting workflow. Zoundroom offers web and mobile access, with its free tier capped at two active projects and sharing for up to two artists. Hookpad is a web alternative focused on chords and melody, with advanced features available as one-minute previews on its free plan.

Nitesong gives web users three free songs and five notation editors. Songcraft offers a Pro plan at 5.00 USD per month with unlimited songs and 15 interactive exercises. SongScribe is available on iOS, macOS and web, with a free ten-song plan and a 19.95 USD one-time lifetime upgrade.

Verdict

Song Cage is a compelling choice for writers who want context-aware chord tools, practical lyric aids and a direct MIDI route into a supported DAW. The 99.00 USD per once licence is the clear option for a sustained desktop or DAW workflow, while the free tier is best treated as a one-song starting point. Choose another tool if full mobile editing, Pro Tools AAX or AI song generation is central to your work.
