Overview

AGNITAS, founded in Munich in 2006, develops OpenEMM as open-source software for newsletters, transactional messages, and date-driven email. It can run on your own premises, with a hosting provider, or in your own data center. That deployment choice matters to organizations with specific operational or privacy requirements, but it also puts the infrastructure work on the user.

Versions from OpenEMM 2019 Spring onward are licensed under GNU AGPLv3. AGNITAS describes the software as GDPR-compliant and highlights user control over hosting, access to source code for security inspection, and the ability to customize it. These are useful governance options, provided the organization can manage its own deployment.

Key features

The campaign manager brings together calendar reminders, comments, responsive templates, and recipient status history. Real-time opener and click statistics give teams a view of response, while profile enrichment and behavior-based target groups can help shape later campaigns. Segmentation, automation, A/B testing, and landing pages extend that toolkit beyond basic newsletter delivery.

Bounce management and a multiqueue mail backend support delivery operations. Web forms, web services, HTTP request endpoints, and import/export options provide routes for connecting data and workflows; Make and n8n integrations add familiar automation bridges. The plugin interface offers another customization path. This is a substantial set of campaign tools, though AGNITAS positions OpenEMM as a reduced-feature option, so organizations needing a broader platform should confirm the fit before committing.

Pricing

OpenEMM — free (unlimited usage period; no costs for use). The plan has no limit on recipients, mailing lists, or dispatches, making it compelling for organizations whose volume would otherwise drive email-platform costs. The meaningful cost is operational: users need suitable server capacity and root-level SSH access to install it.

AGNITAS offers a demo account for 3 days, but it cannot send mailings. Free help is available through FAQs, forums, manuals, online help, and tutorials; paid support and setup services are also offered for teams that need more assistance.

Platforms

OpenEMM is self-hosted and web-based. The download page supports Linux servers and Windows or Mac servers through VirtualBox. The listed platform range also includes API access. The maker calls for at least 4 GB of server RAM, recommends 8 GB, and requires SSH shell access with root rights for installation. These requirements make it a poor fit for teams seeking a hosted service that avoids server administration.

Who it's for

AGNITAS identifies SMEs, associations, and clubs as suitable users when the software's more focused feature range is enough. OpenEMM also suits teams that value deployment control, source access, or freedom from recipient and dispatch caps—and have someone able to install and maintain the system. It is less suitable for organizations that need a turnkey hosted tool or cannot meet the server requirements.

Pros and cons

Pro: No recipient, mailing-list, or dispatch limits on the free plan, so mailing volume does not trigger a software usage charge.
Pro: Self-hosting, AGPLv3 licensing, and source-code access support deployment control and customization.
Pro: Campaign management, behavioral targeting, automation, testing, and landing pages cover more than newsletter sending alone.
Con: Root-level SSH access and at least 4 GB of RAM are installation prerequisites, putting it beyond teams without server expertise.
Con: The demo cannot send mail, so prospective users cannot use it to evaluate live mailing delivery.
Con: AGNITAS describes the feature range as reduced, which may rule it out for teams with broader marketing needs.

Alternatives

phpList is worth considering if a freemium option with a stated subscriber allowance is a better fit: its Forever Free plan is free and permits unlimited subscribers but caps messages at 300.

AWeber may suit teams wanting a hosted web and API option; its free plan is free for up to 500 subscribers and 3,000 monthly emails.

Zoho Campaigns offers a free plan with up to 2,000 contacts, 6,000 emails per month, and 5 users, which may better fit teams that want a defined hosted allowance.

DirectIQ is an alternative for teams preferring pay-as-you-go sending: its plan has unlimited contacts and no monthly commitment, with payment per email sent.

Flashy is another option, with paid plans listed for teams of 1, 3, or 15 users and an enterprise tier for unlimited users.

MailBluster may work for a small mailing program with a defined initial allowance: its free Starter plan includes up to 3,000 emails total, MailBluster branding, and requires users to bring their own SMTP.

Mailercloud offers a hosted free plan with 1,000 contacts, 12,000 emails per month, and one advanced automation for teams that can work within those limits.

Notifuse is another email marketing option.

Verdict

Choose OpenEMM if you want open-source email marketing and automation on infrastructure you control, and you have the expertise to run it. Its unrestricted free mailing volume is a clear advantage. Look elsewhere if you need turnkey hosting, a sendable demo, or a broader feature set than this focused platform provides.
