Overview

MyFitnessPal is a food, exercise, calorie, and nutrition-goal tracker for people who want to keep a personal record across phone and web. It is strongest for individual users who value a large food database and want the option to add more detailed logging or meal planning. The free plan covers routine tracking; the main trade-off is that several of the most convenient tools require a paid tier.

Key features

Food and nutrition logging

The Today tab opens a public database of 22 million food items, giving users a broad starting point for recording meals. Free users can log food and exercise, use recipes and measurements, connect partner apps, and track progress. Premium adds barcode scanning, Meal Scan, voice logging, and multi-day food logging. Those extra entry methods may help users who find manual logging burdensome, but they are a reason to pay rather than a benefit of the free plan.

Premium also supports macro goals by grams or percentage, different goals on different days, and nutrition analysis. That makes it a better fit for users who want more control over their nutrition targets than basic tracking provides; people satisfied with a simple food and exercise log can stay on Free.

Meal planning

Premium+ adds customized weekly meal plans, more than 1,500 recipes, automated logging, grocery lists, and recipe sharing. The planner is available only to Premium+ users in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia, and it is not available on the website. This tier is relevant to users in those countries who want a structured plan and shopping support; anyone outside them, or who needs to plan on the web, should not pay extra for the Meal Planner.

Connected data and support

Accounts sync automatically across supported platforms when the same login and an internet connection are used. With the relevant sharing permissions enabled, MyFitnessPal can sync food, exercise, weight, and sleep data with Apple Health. Connections also include Google Health (formerly Fitbit), Apple Watch, Health Connect, Garmin Connect, and Samsung Health. These integrations are useful for people already tracking activity or health data elsewhere, though Apple Health sharing depends on enabling the permissions.

Premium subscribers receive priority customer support. MyFitnessPal says it maintains technical, organizational, and administrative safeguards for personal information, while noting that no security measures can guarantee security. Its services are intended for people aged 18 and older.

Pricing

MyFitnessPal uses a freemium model, with a free plan, a 7-day trial, and paid plans billed monthly or annually. The free tier includes food and exercise logging, recipes, measurements, and partner app connections, making it the sensible choice for users who need basic tracking and do not need Premium logging tools or meal planning.

Free: Free. Includes food and exercise logging, recipes, measurements, and partner app connections.
Premium (monthly): 19.99 USD per month, billed $19.99 per month. Adds barcode and voice logging, custom nutrition goals, ad-free use, and priority support.
Premium (annual): 79.99 USD per year, billed $79.99 billed annually. Includes the Premium features at a lower total price than paying monthly for a full year, in exchange for an annual billing commitment.
Premium+ (monthly): 24.99 USD per month, billed $24.99/mo., billed monthly. Includes Premium features plus weekly meal plans, recipes, and automated grocery lists.
Premium+ (annual): 99.99 USD per year, billed $99.99 billed annually. Includes Premium+ features with annual billing.

Premium is for users who want the extra logging methods and nutrition controls without a planner. Premium+ costs more and makes sense chiefly for eligible users who will use its weekly plans and grocery lists. The 7-day trial offers a short period to assess the paid tools before choosing a plan.

Platforms

MyFitnessPal is available on Android, iOS, and the web. Automatic account sync supports moving between those platforms, but the Meal Planner is not available on the website. Users whose routine depends on browser-based meal planning should account for that limitation.

Who it's for

MyFitnessPal suits individuals who want a large food database, basic food and exercise logging, progress tracking, and connections to other health services. Premium is a better match for people who want more logging options or individualized macro goals. Premium+ is aimed at users in supported countries who want meal plans and grocery support. It is not a strong choice for practitioners seeking client goals or a client mobile app, since neither is offered.

Pros and cons

Pro: The 22-million-item public food database gives users a wide selection for everyday logging.
Pro: Android, iOS, and web access with automatic sync supports users who switch between devices.
Pro: Premium+ combines weekly meal plans, recipes, automated logging, and grocery lists for eligible users who want planning as well as tracking.
Con: Barcode, Meal Scan, voice, and multi-day logging are Premium features, so users must pay for those conveniences.
Con: Meal Planner access is restricted to six countries and unavailable on the website, limiting its usefulness for some subscribers.
Con: The lack of client goals and a client mobile app makes it unsuitable for practitioners managing clients.

Alternatives

Choose Eat This Much instead if meal planning is the priority: its Premium plan is 5.00 USD per month with an annual subscription and includes weekly planning, automatic grocery lists and delivery integration, and leftovers.

Cronometer is the alternative to consider when detailed nutrient tracking is the priority; its free Basic plan tracks up to 84 nutrients and other compounds, with reports and charts limited to a 7-day window.

Verdict

Choose MyFitnessPal if you want an individual food and exercise tracker with a very large public food database, broad device access, and a free way to cover the basics. Pay for Premium when its additional logging methods and nutrition controls matter; choose Premium+ only if you are in a supported country and will use its meal-planning tools. Look elsewhere if you need a practitioner platform or depend on web-based meal planning.
