Overview

Jubler is a free, open-source desktop editor for creating, editing, and converting text-based subtitles. It is best for subtitle editors who need format flexibility, detailed timing tools, or repeatable batch work across desktop systems. Its breadth is compelling at no cost, but media preview depends on VLC.

Key features

Jubler supports more than 20 subtitle formats, including SRT, ASS/SSA, WebVTT, TTML, ITT, DFXP, and YouTube subtitles, and exports SRT and VTT. This makes it useful when a project moves between formats or delivery workflows. Time shifting, frame-rate conversion, and splitting or joining entries and files handle common synchronization and organization tasks.

The interactive timeline adds draggable subtitle blocks and two-point synchronization, giving editors a visual way to align text. Spell checking and regular-expression find and replace support cleanup, particularly when correcting repeated text; ASpell is suggested for spell checking. Configurable quality rules and TED guidelines compliance checking provide additional review checks before export.

Jubler includes automatic captioning and translation mode with Azure Translator support. VLC enables video and frame preview, audio waveform visualization, and real-time subtitle editing during playback. VLC is required for those preview features, so users without it lose an important way to check timing against media. The generic Java version does not support embedded preview. Command-line tools support batch processing and automation, making Jubler a stronger fit for recurring work than a simple one-off edit.

Pricing

Jubler is free: its Free plan is free. It includes the desktop subtitle editor, and the project relies exclusively on donations. There is no paid tier to unlock the editor; the practical trade-off is that video preview and audio waveform require VLC, while the generic Java build lacks embedded preview.

Platforms

Jubler runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Downloads include macOS builds for Apple Silicon and Intel, Linux builds for x86_64 and arm64, Windows, and a generic Java version. VLC is required for video preview and audio waveform; ASpell is suggested for spell checking.

Who it's for

Jubler suits subtitle editors who value precise timing, broad format support, translation, and batch automation without subscription costs. Its command-line tools and quality checks also make it relevant to people managing repeated subtitle workflows. It is less suitable for users who want media preview without installing VLC or who need an embedded preview from the generic Java version.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 20 formats plus SRT and VTT export help accommodate varied subtitle workflows.
Pro: Timeline synchronization, timing conversion, and file-splitting tools offer more control than basic text editing.
Pro: Translation mode, quality checks, and command-line batch processing extend its usefulness beyond individual edits.
Pro: The editor is free, open source, and available across Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Con: VLC is required for video preview and audio waveforms, adding a dependency for core media-review work.
Con: The generic Java build does not support embedded preview.

Alternatives

Subtitle Software is a useful starting point for comparing subtitle tools more broadly.

VideoLocalize is worth considering for a web or API workflow; its free tier is limited to 1 user account, 2 jobs, 4-minute videos, 1 GB of storage, 10 minutes of machine transcription, and 30 minutes of auto-synch.
Editsub is another cross-platform option, with Linux, macOS, web, and Windows support. Its free plan covers 10 subtitle files, while its Pro plan costs 48.00 USD per year.
SRTGen is a web and API alternative with a free tier that includes SRT, VTT, and TXT export, a 5-minute screen-recording limit, and 2 GB of storage.
Subtitle Edit is another free, open-source editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Checksub is a paid web, API, and extension option with a free plan and trial; its Junior plan is 18.00 USD per month.
Subvideo.ai is a web-based option with guest and free-account tiers.
EZTitles is a paid Windows option with a free trial.
FAB Subtitler is a Windows option with a free trial.

Verdict

Choose Jubler if you want a free desktop subtitle editor with deep timing controls, many formats, and command-line batch tools. Its main advantage is that this broad editing workflow carries no subscription cost; its main drawback is the VLC dependency for media preview, so users who need preview without that setup should look elsewhere.
