Overview

Happy HR is a cloud HR platform that combines employee management with recruitment and workforce tools. It suits Australian employers managing several stages of the employee lifecycle; its breadth is appealing, but the paid plans require at least 10 employees and a long subscription term.

Free recruitment and rostering make it possible to use selected capabilities without buying a paid HR plan. For broader HR management, compare the commitment and add-on costs with the value of bringing these functions together.

Key features

Employee lifecycle management

Happy HR covers employee records, time off, onboarding, performance management and time tracking, alongside recruitment, safety, training, surveys and asset management. That range can suit employers who want several people-management tasks in one cloud platform. It is less suited to a business looking for only a single, narrow HR tool.

The free recruitment software includes job advertising, candidate matching and talent-pool management. Free rostering and timesheet management are also included. These provide useful ways to start with hiring or scheduling without taking on a paid HR subscription; the recruitment trial requires at least one employee and lasts 30 days.

Support and integrations

Plans include 15 minutes of dedicated HR support each month, enough for focused questions but a limited allowance for employers seeking ongoing advice. Pro adds a dedicated qualified HR consultant. Integrations with accounting, rostering, ERP and other app partners can help connect HR work to related business systems.

The pricing page states that Happy HR is ISO 27001 certified. Mobile apps are available alongside the web platform.

Optional products

Payroll and learning are separate purchases. Payroll ranges from standard processing to outsourced payroll, while the learning management system includes compliance courses, an AI course builder, learning pathways, skill mapping and reporting. These options broaden the platform, but add cost beyond the HR subscription.

Pricing

Happy HR uses a freemium model, with free recruitment software and paid plans. The free recruitment offering includes job advertising, candidate matching and talent-pool management; the accompanying trial is 30 days, needs no credit card and requires at least one employee.

Self-guided and Pro each show a price of 12.00 USD per month, plus GST, on a 12-month subscription term, with a minimum of 10 employees. The broader pricing note says paid plans start from $8 +GST per employee per month, so confirm the applicable price for the plan and employee count before committing. Subscription terms are 12, 24 or 36 months, with longer terms saving more. Pro also has a one-time setup fee of $1,899 +GST; its setup covers account configuration, an HR audit, position descriptions, and manager and employee training. The Pro consultant may appeal to employers wanting qualified HR guidance, while Self-guided avoids that setup charge.

Payroll is an add-on: Payroll standard is 4.00 USD per month +GST and includes flexible payroll, employee self-service, timesheets, reporting and ATO electronic lodgements. Payroll + is 6.00 USD per month +GST and adds a pay-conditions engine, compliant awards, rostering and a time-and-attendance kiosk. Setup is quoted separately for both. Outsourced payroll is priced at 19.95 USD per month +GST for weekly, 14.95 USD per month +GST for fortnightly, or 9.95 USD per month +GST for monthly processing.

The Learning Management System is 4.00 USD per month +GST and includes compliance courses, an AI course builder, learning pathways, skill mapping and reporting and analytics. The Course Library is also 4.00 USD per month +GST. These add-ons let employers extend the platform selectively, but make the total cost higher than the HR plan alone.

Platforms

Happy HR is available on web, Android and iOS. Its cloud delivery suits teams that need access across desktop and mobile devices.

Who it's for

Happy HR is a stronger fit for employers with at least 10 employees who want recruitment, core HR administration and workforce tools in one platform, and can accept a 12-, 24- or 36-month term. The free recruitment software can suit smaller teams exploring hiring tools. Employers seeking a short commitment, fewer than 10 employees on a paid plan, or only one focused HR function should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free recruitment and rostering provide practical entry points without a paid HR plan.
Pros: Employee management spans records, leave, onboarding, performance and time tracking, with safety, training, surveys and assets also covered.
Pros: Payroll and learning options can extend the platform, and Pro includes a dedicated qualified HR consultant.
Cons: Paid plans have a 10-employee minimum and require a term of at least 12 months, limiting flexibility for smaller or short-term needs.
Cons: Pro carries a $1,899 +GST one-time setup fee, and payroll setup is quoted separately.
Cons: Add-ons increase the cost beyond the HR subscription, while included monthly HR support is limited to 15 minutes.

Alternatives

For organisations seeking a dedicated employee knowledge base rather than a broad HR platform, compare the HR Knowledge Base Software list. For a wider set of HR tools to compare, start with the HR Software list.

Jostle is another option with a free plan and employee news, activity feeds, recognition and discussions. KBPublisher may suit teams seeking a free, open-source, self-hosted knowledge base with unlimited staff users, end users, articles and files. XWiki offers a free on-premises community edition with community support. Zunoy has a free plan for up to seven employees. HRDocket Employee Self-Service has a free tier limited to one employee profile, one company, 10 AI credits, limited templates and watermarked PDF downloads.

CompassDocs offers a free, self-hosted community edition with unlimited users and documents. Wiki.js is a free, self-hosted option. BookStack is also free and self-hosted.

Verdict

Choose Happy HR if your business has at least 10 employees and wants recruitment, employee management and rostering in one cloud platform, with the option to add payroll, learning or Pro HR guidance. Its free recruitment and rostering are useful, but the minimum headcount, multi-year terms and potential add-on and setup costs make it a weaker choice for smaller employers or anyone prioritising flexibility.
