Overview

Kill Bill is a flexible billing foundation for businesses building subscription, usage-based pricing, invoicing, and payment workflows. It is best suited to teams with technical capacity and a need to shape billing around their business. The trade-off is clear: self-hosting gives control over infrastructure and data, but also makes operations and upgrades your responsibility.

Key features

Billing and revenue operations

Kill Bill supports subscriptions, usage-based billing, multi-currency billing, and proration controls, alongside dunning and tax automation. That breadth can cover important recurring-revenue workflows in one programmable platform, making it a strong fit for businesses with varied pricing or payment needs. Teams seeking a finished, fully managed workflow by default may find that flexibility brings more setup responsibility than they want.

Payment connections

Plugins connect the payment platform to gateways, issuing banks, and fraud tools. Named integrations include Stripe, Adyen, PayPal, Braintree, GoCardless, and Coinbase, as well as the tax services Avalara and Vertex. The plugin model gives teams options for assembling a payment stack, though a plugin-based platform is most useful when a team can make and maintain its own integration choices.

Back office, deployment, and security

Kaui is a web-based back-office interface for configuring price books and managing subscriptions and payments. Kill Bill can be installed with Docker or Tomcat and run on Windows, Mac, Linux, or a Linux cloud server. Encryption at rest and in transit, TLS communications, AES-256 stored-data encryption, audit logs, role-based access controls, and multi-tenant isolation are described as security controls. The maker says its technical controls are intended to help enterprises meet SOC 2 and PCI-DSS requirements; teams should treat that as support for compliance work, not a substitute for their own obligations.

Pricing

Kill Bill has a freemium model and a free trial. The self-hosted open-source core has no published price and includes control over infrastructure and data. Community support is included; paid support tiers are purchased separately for customer-managed deployments. This option suits teams that want to run the software themselves and can handle ongoing operations.

The hosted platform, ChaChing, is fully managed and uses the same Kill Bill APIs and data model, but follows a separate commercial model with custom pricing. It is the option to consider when managed operation matters more than running the stack in-house.

The AWS Marketplace plan is listed at approximately $40/mo, plus AWS infrastructure costs. It runs in your AWS account, so it offers a deployment route for teams already using AWS but does not remove the work of operating the stack. Paid plans therefore do not all mean managed service: compare who operates the software, infrastructure costs, and support needs before choosing.

Platforms

Kill Bill supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms. Docker and Tomcat installation options give technical teams multiple ways to deploy it, including on a Linux cloud server. Its broad platform support is useful for organizations with specific hosting needs, but the self-hosted customer remains responsible for operating and upgrading the system.

Who it's for

Kill Bill is aimed at online businesses, startups, growth-stage companies, and teams that need to customize billing. It is particularly compelling when a business needs programmable subscription or usage-based billing, control of its deployment, and payment-provider choice. It is a weaker fit for teams that want billing operations handled end to end without taking on stack maintenance.

Pros and cons

Pro: Supports subscriptions, usage-based pricing, multi-currency billing, and proration, giving teams room to handle different billing models.
Pro: Plugin connections span payment, fraud, and tax services, offering flexibility in assembling a payment stack.
Pro: Kaui provides a web back office for price books, subscriptions, and payments alongside the programmable core.
Con: Self-hosting requires customers to operate and upgrade Kill Bill, adding ongoing technical work.
Con: The AWS Marketplace option adds AWS infrastructure costs and still leaves stack operations with the customer.
Con: The hosted platform uses a separate commercial model, so it is not priced like the roughly $40/mo AWS Marketplace option.

Alternatives

For teams comparing billing and payment tools, the Subscription Billing Software, Dunning Management Software, and Payment Processing Software directories can help narrow the category.

NovaBilling is another freemium option with a self-hosted Community plan at no cost, including all features, unlimited tenants and customers, six payment providers, and GitHub community support; choose it if those plan terms better match your needs.

SubJolt offers a free Starter plan capped at 50 cancel sessions per month, with a cancel-flow widget, default flow and styling, and basic reason tracking and sentiment analysis, but no gateway save actions. It is the more focused choice for teams working on cancellation flows rather than a programmable billing core.

UniBee has a free open-source plan for self-hosted, customizable use with manual setup and community support; consider it if those terms suit a team comfortable with setup work.

Pabbly Subscriptions has a free plan capped at 50 customers, with revenue limited and team members and the affiliate module excluded. It may suit a smaller customer base better than a self-hosted platform, while Kill Bill is the more appropriate choice when control and customization are priorities.

Airwallex Billing offers free invoice creation and sending globally, plus usage-based billing at 0.50 USD per once, billed per successful transaction. It is worth considering when those invoicing or transaction-priced billing options fit better.

Lago offers an AGPLv3-licensed, self-hosted open-source plan at no cost, making it an alternative for teams weighing open-source billing options.

Churnkey has a Starter plan at 250.00 USD per year, billed at $250 per month yearly, for teams with less than $5k/mo churn volume; it includes cancel flows, payment recovery, and metrics. Choose it when those churn-focused capabilities are the need rather than a general billing platform.

PayKickstart includes all platform features, no platform transaction fees, and a 14-day free trial on its listed plan; consider it as another option if those terms are a better fit.

Verdict

Choose Kill Bill if your business needs a programmable billing core, broad payment connections, and control over deployment, and you have the technical capacity to operate it. Its main advantage is the combination of billing flexibility and deployment choice; its main drawback is that self-hosting puts upgrades and day-to-day operation on your team. If you want those responsibilities handled for you, consider its separately priced hosted platform or a tool better aligned with managed billing.
