Overview

Distributed agents run tests between network locations every 500 milliseconds, measuring latency, packet loss, jitter, throughput, and MOS score. That gives teams several signals to compare when performance degrades, rather than leaving them with a simple up-or-down check.

SNMP monitoring gathers health data from routers, switches, and firewalls, helping teams relate device problems to network performance. Application checks, including HTTP URL tests, can help distinguish a network problem from an application or user issue. Visual traceroutes add hop-level latency and show where along a path performance may be worsening.

Obkio says it does not capture real user traffic, using synthetic traffic instead. That suits teams seeking network measurements without collecting user sessions, but synthetic checks are not a view of actual user activity.

Key features

Distributed synthetic tests: Checks every 500 milliseconds provide a frequent view of latency, packet loss, jitter, throughput, and MOS score. This is useful when issues are intermittent, though the measurements remain synthetic.
Device and application context: SNMP health data from routers, switches, and firewalls can be considered alongside application performance checks. HTTP URL testing and application monitoring help narrow whether a symptom points to the network or elsewhere.
Visual traceroutes: Hop-level latency helps locate where a path begins to degrade, a practical aid for troubleshooting across network locations.
Notifications and reports: Email alerts are supported, and the pricing page lists Slack, Microsoft Teams, PagerDuty, and HTTP webhooks for notifications or events. Reports can be exported to Excel, PDF, or JSON and scheduled daily, weekly, or monthly.
Security controls: Listed controls include MFA, TLS-encrypted communications, encryption of stored data, user roles, and audit logs.

Pricing

Obkio uses a freemium model. The 14-Day Free Trial is free for 14 days, includes Premium features, supports up to 10 agents, and requires no credit card. At the end, the account switches to Free and agents above the Free limit are disabled, so teams should plan their coverage before the trial expires.

The Free plan is free forever, with a maximum of two software agents. That is a useful way to assess the service or monitor a small footprint, but it is restrictive for multisite coverage.

Paid plan prices are custom pricing, with monthly pricing and a request for an official quote for several tiers. Starter is aimed at SMEs with fewer than three locations; Basic is for multiple network locations; and Premium targets mid- to large multisite networks. Custom Enterprise is for MSPs and large businesses and offers tailored pricing. These tiers broaden the intended fit beyond the free cap, but a quote is needed to compare their costs.

There are also targeted quote-based plans: Non-Profit Organizations for multi-site NPOs; Education Sponsorship for colleges and universities; and 50 Remote Users and 100 Remote Users. Each remote-user plan includes respectively 50 or 100 agents, 10 devices, two users, Public Monitoring Agents, and Windows 11 and macOS workstations. The fixed user and device counts matter when sizing a deployment.

Platforms

Obkio supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and API access. Its hybrid deployment approach suits environments that combine cloud service access with agents in network locations.

Who it's for

Obkio is best suited to teams responsible for multiple network locations, including small businesses scaling beyond a couple of sites, multisite organizations, MSPs, remote-user deployments, nonprofits, and colleges or universities. The 500-millisecond test cadence and traceroutes are particularly relevant when teams need to investigate intermittent degradation rather than only check availability.

It is less suitable for anyone who needs a generous free deployment: two agents will not cover many locations, and the trial's 10-agent ceiling does not persist after 14 days. Teams that require monitoring of real user traffic should also consider a different approach.

Pros and cons

Pro: Frequent synthetic checks track five performance measures, giving troubleshooting teams more context than a basic connectivity signal.
Pro: Device health, application checks, and hop-level traceroutes help narrow the likely source of a problem.
Pro: Scheduled exports, multiple notification integrations, and listed security controls support operational reporting and administration.
Con: The free plan stops at two agents, making it a narrow option for multisite monitoring.
Con: The 14-day trial falls back to Free, disabling agents above two; teams cannot assume trial coverage will continue unchanged.
Con: Paid plans require quotes, so buyers cannot compare their costs directly from the plan prices.
Con: Synthetic traffic does not provide monitoring of real user traffic.

Alternatives

Consider Paessler PRTG Network Monitor if a sensor-based free tier is a better fit: its Freeware Edition allows up to 100 sensors, about 10 devices.

Centreon is another option to compare for teams considering an open-source core platform.

ManageEngine OpManager may suit a small device footprint with its perpetual Free Edition for three devices.

NetXMS is worth considering for buyers seeking an open-source monitoring solution with free use; its Windows server binaries are limited to 250 nodes.

SoftPerfect Bandwidth Manager is an alternative for teams focused on bandwidth rules and usage monitoring, with a free Lite plan capped at five rules or streams.

Checkmk offers a free Community edition with 2,000+ pre-built integrations and support for up to about 100 hosts, making it an option to compare when integration breadth matters.

WhatsUp Gold has a free edition for 10 devices, which may be a more suitable starting point for that device count.

Domotz is another monitoring option to compare for teams that prefer per-device billing.

Verdict

Choose Obkio when your priority is diagnosing intermittent network performance across locations using frequent synthetic tests, device health, application checks, and traceroutes. Its narrow free cap and quote-based paid tiers are the main reasons to compare alternatives before committing, especially if you need broader free coverage, transparent costs, or real-user-traffic monitoring.
