Overview

OpenServe is an open-source customer-support platform that answers questions from a business’s own documentation. It suits teams that want to choose their deployment and AI model; the central trade-off is operating it yourself or paying for a hosted service.

Self-hosting runs through Docker Compose, while the hosted option covers infrastructure, updates, and scaling. Its MIT license lets users inspect, contribute to, or fork the code, making self-hosting a meaningful choice for teams that want control rather than simply a lower-cost tier. OpenServe describes itself as built in Denmark.

Key features

The knowledge base accepts PDFs, websites, and FAQs, then chunks and embeds them automatically. Answers use retrieval-augmented generation and include source citations customers can verify. That traceability is useful when support teams want customers to check an answer against the underlying material; it still makes the quality of those answers depend on the documentation the business maintains.

OpenServe supports OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, and local models, with bring-your-own API keys. This gives technically capable teams room to choose a provider, but also leaves key management with them on BYOK plans. The Managed plan takes a different approach, supplying provider-managed keys and intelligent model routing in exchange for per-use charges.

The web chat widget is embedded with one script tag and can be customized to match a brand. The connector marketplace includes Shopify, Zendesk, and e-conomic, and the SDK allows customers to build connectors. That combination offers a path to common integrations and custom ones, though building the latter is an engineering task.

OpenServe describes its security approach as GDPR by design, with EU-hosted infrastructure, encryption at rest, and a full audit trail. The hosted plans also include a 99.9% uptime SLA. Self-Hosted lists community support, whereas both hosted plans include priority support—a practical distinction for teams that need a provider to help with operations.

Pricing

Self-Hosted has custom pricing and unlimited conversations. It is the natural fit for teams able to deploy and maintain Docker Compose themselves, especially if avoiding a hosted conversation cap matters. Community support is the trade-off.

BYOK Hosted costs 600.00 USD per month, billed, plus a 2.000 kr one-time setup charge. It includes priority support, EU-hosted infrastructure, and a 99.9% uptime SLA; customers supply their own API keys. The page states no conversation limit. This suits teams that want OpenServe to handle infrastructure, updates, and scaling but prefer to manage their own model keys.

Managed also costs 600.00 USD per month, billed, plus a 2.000 kr one-time setup charge and pay per use. It adds provider-managed API keys and intelligent model routing, alongside priority support, EU-hosted infrastructure, and the same 99.9% uptime SLA; the page states no conversation limit. It is the better fit for teams that would rather delegate model-key management, but usage charges add to the subscription.

Both hosted plans carry a substantial monthly commitment and an upfront setup charge, so they are less suited to teams seeking a low-cost hosted entry point. Managed token pricing for Claude Opus 4.8 input has custom pricing. No free hosted tier or trial terms are stated.

Platforms

OpenServe is available on the web and as a self-hosted deployment, with the website as its deployment channel. The Docker Compose route suits teams prepared to run their own instance; hosted deployment suits those who want the provider to handle infrastructure, updates, and scaling.

Who it's for

OpenServe is best for support teams with useful documentation, a need for cited answers, and either the technical capacity to self-host or the budget for hosted service. The provider and local-model options appeal to teams that want model choice, while BYOK makes key ownership explicit. Teams that need a free hosted plan, or cannot justify the hosted subscription and setup costs, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Cited answers grounded in PDFs, websites, and FAQs give customers a way to verify support responses.
Pro: Docker Compose self-hosting, an MIT license, and support for hosted, local, and major-provider models give technical teams control over deployment and model choice.
Pro: Hosted plans combine EU infrastructure, priority support, and a 99.9% uptime SLA.
Con: Both hosted plans cost 600.00 USD per month and require a 2.000 kr one-time setup charge, a high commitment for teams starting small.
Con: BYOK requires customers to bring their own API keys; Managed adds pay-per-use charges on top of the subscription.
Con: Self-Hosted lists community rather than priority support, so teams must be comfortable operating their own deployment.

Alternatives

For a self-hosted MIT option with a free plan, consider Stept: its self-hosted plan includes unlimited seats, an AI agent with your own model key, and a knowledge base. Choose it when those stated inclusions and a free plan matter more than OpenServe’s hosted service terms.

Enjo AI Support Agent has a free plan with unlimited seats, 200 AI replies per month, a shared inbox, and a help center, plus a 95.00 USD per month Starter plan. It is a better starting point for teams that need a free tier or want a lower-priced paid option and can work within the free reply cap.

Voiceflow is a paid platform with a free trial and a free Agencies & Partners plan that includes usage-based billing, multi-client workspace management, and white-labeling. It is worth considering for agencies seeking those specific client-management features.

Webex App offers a free plan with meetings for up to 100 attendees and 40 minutes. Choose it instead when those meeting limits fit the need better than a documentation-based support platform.

Gorgias is another paid support option with a free plan and free trial.

Agentforce Vibes has a free Salesforce Foundations plan that includes Agentforce Vibes, as well as paid options.

Freshdesk offers a free program for 1–2 agents for six months and a Growth plan at 19.00 USD per month billed annually. It may suit teams comparing a time-limited free program with an annual-billed entry plan.

Intercom is a paid alternative with a free trial and an Essential plan at 19.00 USD per seat/month billed annually, including Fin AI Agent, Messenger, and shared inbox and ticketing. Consider it when those named tools and per-seat pricing better match your support setup.

Verdict

Choose OpenServe if your team wants documentation-grounded, verifiable answers and values control over deployment and model choice. Self-hosting keeps conversations unlimited, while hosted service adds operational coverage and priority support. Look elsewhere if you need a low-cost hosted start, since both hosted plans require a substantial monthly fee and setup charge.
