Overview

PostHog brings product and web analytics, session replay, feature flags, event routing, and a data warehouse into one platform for people building products. That range can help teams connect product signals to decisions about releases and customer data without splitting those workflows across several products.

Its open-source product is licensed under MIT. The Trust Center lists SOC 2, GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA compliance, and says PostHog’s products are covered by an independently audited SOC 2 Type II report.

Key features

Analytics and session replay

Alongside event tracking, the analytics suite includes funnels, heatmaps, graphs and trends, lifecycle analysis, and user paths. This makes PostHog useful for teams that need to examine both conversion journeys and broader usage patterns. Session Replay records sessions from web, React Native, iOS, Android, Flutter, and other SDKs, adding individual-session context to aggregate analysis. The trade-off is shorter replay retention on the free plan: one month.

Feature flags and event routing

Feature Flags can target users, groups, or percentages of traffic, with phased rollouts, kill switches, multivariate variants, JSON payloads, and beta opt-ins. These controls suit teams that want to manage staged releases and experiments alongside product analysis. PostHog CDP transforms events in real time and routes them to more than 50 destinations, including webhooks, Slack, Braze, and Customer.io; that is useful for teams coordinating product signals across customer workflows.

Warehouse and development tools

The integrated data warehouse can use external warehouses such as Snowflake or BigQuery as data sources. PostHog Desktop is a coding agent for macOS, Windows, and Linux that can draw on signals such as errors, support tickets, session replays, GitHub issues, Linear, and Zendesk to investigate causes and create pull requests. This extends the platform beyond measurement, though teams that only need analytics may not need that wider scope.

Pricing

PostHog has a freemium model, with no free trial. The free plan is free, is billed monthly, and requires no credit card. Its monthly allowances are 1M analytics events, 5K session recordings, 1M feature-flag requests, 100K exceptions, 1,500 survey responses, and 1M warehouse rows. That is a substantial starting point for teams validating workflows, but the quotas and one-month recording retention make it less suited to sustained, high-volume use.

Pay-as-you-go Analytics has custom pricing and includes 1M free analytics events per month, 6 projects, and seven-year data retention. Pay-as-you-go is usage-based, billed once a month, and includes unlimited usage, 6 projects, seven-year retention, and email support. Slack support is available to customers spending over $2,000 per month. The free plan instead includes community support. Paid plans guarantee seven years of retention for events and metadata, compared with one year on free, so teams with longer analysis needs have a clear reason to move up; usage-based billing means they should also consider their expected consumption.

Platforms

PostHog supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, web, API, and self-hosted use. Its session replay SDK coverage includes web, React Native, iOS, Android, and Flutter, while PostHog Desktop is shipped for macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel, Windows, and Linux packages including AppImage, .deb, and .rpm.

Who it's for

PostHog is a strong fit for product teams that want analytics, replay, feature flags, and event routing in a shared platform, particularly when they work across web and mobile. Its warehouse connections and broad data tooling also suit teams that need product signals to inform wider customer-data work. It is a less compelling fit for buyers who want a focused analytics tool or who cannot accommodate usage-based paid billing.

Pros and cons

Pros: Analytics, replay, flags, routing, and warehouse tools sit together, giving product teams several connected ways to understand and act on usage.
Pros: The free plan has defined allowances across six usage categories and does not require a credit card.
Pros: Paid plans guarantee seven-year retention for events and metadata, compared with one year on free.
Cons: Free session recordings are retained for only one month, which limits their usefulness for longer-term review.
Cons: Paid support is tied to the pay-as-you-go offer, and Slack support requires spending over $2,000 per month.
Cons: Pay-as-you-go billing is usage-based, so teams need to account for consumption rather than a fixed listed price.

Alternatives

For a smaller free analytics footprint, Visitor Analytics (TWIPLA) offers 400 monthly page views, 20 monthly events, one conversion funnel, and 25 session recordings. Choose it when those caps cover the need and a narrower package is preferable.

Zoho Apptics is another freemium option, with a Free Forever plan covering one project, five applications per project, 5K errors per month, and 25K engagements per month. Its project-and-application structure may suit buyers seeking an app-focused alternative.

Matomo offers a free Community plan with unlimited users and hits, plus API and self-hosted platforms. It is worth considering when self-hosting and those unlimited usage terms matter more than PostHog’s broader product-tool set.

Amplitude has a free plan with 2M events per month, 10,000 monthly session replays, and 2,000 AI feedback records. It may fit teams prioritizing those free allowances.

Heap is an alternative with a free plan covering 10,000 monthly sessions and six months of data history. Mixpanel offers a free plan with unlimited seats, 1M events per month, 10K session replays per month, 1K monthly tracked users, and 10 active feature flags; it may suit teams whose needs align with those caps.

Contentsquare offers a free plan with 10k monthly sessions and seven months of data access, making it an option when those limits are sufficient. OpenPanel has a paid 5K-events-per-month plan at 2.50 USD per month, for buyers who want a low fixed monthly price at that event volume.

Compare the wider web analytics tools, customer analytics software, product analytics tools, and mobile app analytics software categories if you are still deciding which kind of tool fits your work.

Verdict

Choose PostHog if you want a broad product platform that links analytics and replay with feature flags, event routing, and warehouse tools. Its free plan is a practical entry point, while paid plans add long retention; look elsewhere if you need a narrow analytics product, or if usage-based billing and the threshold for Slack support do not suit your budget.
