Overview

Emails are composed in a web interface as personalized plain-text or HTML messages, with templates available. Subscribers can be imported from CSV or tab-delimited files and mapped to custom attributes, then organized into lists with unlimited segmentation. That breadth makes it practical for organizations serving distinct audiences; the trade-off is that managing lists and delivery controls still takes operational attention.

Consent features include double opt-in, unsubscribe handling and a do-not-send list for unsubscribed recipients. Campaigns can be scheduled, stopped on schedule, or sent through cron jobs or the command line. Websites can connect subscription functionality through AJAX or the API, and campaigns can use content from a CMS such as WordPress.

Key features

Targeting and testing: Audience segmentation and A/B testing help teams address different subscriber groups and compare campaign variants. These are useful for organizations with varied audiences, though the facts do not establish how sophisticated the testing workflow is.
Tracking: Built-in statistics track opens, clicks and forwards; Google Analytics or Piwik can also be used. This gives campaign teams several engagement signals, but the maker's privacy claims around link tracking should be considered alongside the need to measure clicks.
Sending control: Local or remote cron jobs and command-line sending suit operators who need control over delivery timing. That flexibility depends on access to suitable hosting and a working mail server for self-hosted use.
Privacy and support: The maker says self-hosting and built-in link tracking can help protect subscriber privacy, and that community members contribute to security. Documentation, forums and IRC provide community help; paid help is available from phpList developers and consultants. The core application is licensed under AGPLv3.

Pricing

The pricing model is freemium, with a free trial also offered. The options differ substantially in how they cap usage, so list size and sending volume should guide the choice.

Forever Free: Free, with 300 messages and unlimited subscribers. This keeps the contact count open but sharply limits sending, making it more suitable for infrequent communications than regular newsletters.
phpList.com free account: Free, with 300 messages a month, free forever. It provides a continuing hosted option, but the monthly quota is restrictive for active campaigns.
$1 Plan: Custom pricing; 9,000 messages and 3,000 subscribers. The stated allowance suits a modest list with recurring sends, but price is not provided, so its cost cannot be weighed against the free cap.
Pay-per-subscriber plans: Custom pricing is offered for 500, 1,000, 2,500, 5,000, 10,000, 25,000 and 50,000 subscribers. The range accommodates different audience sizes, but no message quota or price is provided for these tiers.
Self-hosted phpList: Free to download and run on your own servers. It avoids a software charge, but requires suitable hosting and a working mail server, so it is not a no-cost managed service.
phpList.com basic account: 1.00 USD per month, billed per month; it is a basic account with payment per message or per subscriber. It may suit buyers who prefer a hosted account and variable usage costs, but the send and subscriber allowances are not given.

Across the options, the stated headline limits are 3,000 subscribers and 9,000 monthly sends. Check the precise allowance for the chosen account, particularly if sending volume is likely to grow.

Platforms

phpList supports API, Linux, self-hosted and web environments. Its Linux and self-hosted options suit organizations able to operate their own infrastructure; teams without a working mail server should favor a hosted arrangement or another service.

Who it's for

Community groups, small businesses, start-ups, large companies, government departments and charities are among the intended users. The strongest fit is an organization that needs segmented newsletters and can either manage mail infrastructure or work within phpList.com's quotas. Buyers who prioritize minimal administration should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros:
- Unlimited list segmentation, custom attributes and multiple import formats support varied subscriber groups.
- Double opt-in, unsubscribe handling and a do-not-send list provide practical consent controls.
- Scheduling, cron and command-line options give operators control over sending.
- Free self-hosted software avoids a license charge for teams with the required infrastructure.
Cons:
- Self-hosting requires suitable hosting and a working mail server, adding operational responsibilities.
- The free hosted allowance of 300 messages a month is restrictive for frequent campaigns.
- Several subscriber-based tiers have custom pricing, making their cost difficult to compare upfront.

Alternatives

For other choices, compare Email Marketing Software and Newsletter Platforms.

Zoho Campaigns may fit teams needing up to five users on a free plan, with up to 2,000 contacts and 6,000 monthly emails.
DirectIQ offers a no-monthly-commitment pay-as-you-go option with unlimited contacts and payment per email sent, which may suit variable sending needs.

Mailercloud offers a free plan with 1,000 contacts, 12,000 monthly emails and one advanced automation, an alternative for users prioritizing a larger stated free sending allowance.
Notifuse is another freemium platform with API, self-hosted and web support.
Twilio Segment is another freemium platform, with web, iOS and Android support.
Wiz offers a paid plan at 15.00 USD per month for up to 500 active contacts and 5,000 monthly email sends.

Verdict

Choose phpList if you need flexible subscriber segmentation, campaign controls and a free self-hosted option, and have the capacity to manage the sending infrastructure. Its main appeal is control without a software license fee; the main reasons to look elsewhere are server responsibility and tight free hosted quotas. For a hosted choice, confirm the subscriber and message allowance—and custom pricing—before committing.
