Overview

Sciwand is a desktop app that brings reference management, paper reading, research analysis and academic writing into one workspace. It is best suited to researchers handling literature reviews or paper screening who want analysis alongside their source library. Its broad research workflow is compelling, though the AI licence requires users to supply an API key or use local models.

Key features

Sciwand searches academic databases within the app and can screen results with AI, which can help narrow a large search before closer review. Treat those screening results as a way to prioritize papers, not as a replacement for scholarly judgment.

Across a library, AI columns can score papers, mark them yes or no for screening, extract findings and create structured datasets. Library chat answers cite source sentences and point to the relevant page, making it easier to check what an answer draws on. These capabilities suit comparative work across papers better than a reader who only needs to store and cite a small collection.

The built-in Markdown writer supports more than 10,000 citation styles. Sciwand also has a Microsoft Word add-in for Windows and macOS, but it is in beta; researchers who depend on a settled Word workflow should factor that in. PDF annotation is supported, and the app accepts PDF, Word, EPUB, Markdown, plain text and saved web pages.

One-way sync with Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley and Bookends leaves the existing reference library unmodified. The library, annotations and notes stay on the user's disk; cloud sync is optional and configurable by category. For hosted AI, the text needed for a request goes to the provider whose key the user supplies. Local models send nothing to a provider, an option for users who do not want hosted processing.

Sciwand is available for iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows. Its product description centers on a desktop app, so the listed iOS platform should not be taken as evidence of feature parity with desktop.

Pricing

The Free plan is free, is billed forever and includes core reading, organizing and writing tools. AI is free for 7 days, after which the free plan's core tools remain but ongoing AI requires another route. This is the sensible starting point for readers who want to organize and annotate without committing to paid AI.

The Lifetime plan costs 29.99 USD per once as a one-time payment. It includes unlimited AI features and lifetime updates, but users bring their own API key and pay AI providers directly; local models are also supported. The price covers Sciwand's licence, not provider usage, so the total AI cost depends on the route chosen. A licence can be moved to a new computer by deactivating the old device, and device coverage can be upgraded by paying the difference.

Platforms

Sciwand supports iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows. The Word add-in is for Windows and macOS and remains in beta.

Who it's for

Sciwand is a strong fit for researchers who regularly search, screen and compare papers, then draft work with citations. It is less suited to someone seeking only a lightweight reference library, or to a Word-dependent writer who needs a non-beta add-in. Users who want AI without managing an API key or choosing local models should also weigh that requirement before buying.

Pros and cons

Pros: Search, screening, source analysis, reading and citation-supported writing share one app, reducing the need to move between separate research tools.
Pros: Local library storage and optional category-based cloud sync give users control over where library materials reside.
Pros: One-way reference-manager sync can bring an existing Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley or Bookends library into the workflow without modifying it.
Cons: The lifetime AI licence still requires a user-supplied provider key and direct payment to the AI provider, unless using local models.
Cons: The Microsoft Word add-in is in beta, making it a less dependable choice for workflows that hinge on Word integration.
Cons: AI is free for only 7 days on the otherwise free plan, so sustained AI-assisted screening or analysis requires the lifetime licence and its separate AI usage costs, or local models.

Alternatives

Choose Citation Management Software or Reference Management Software to compare a broader set of tools. Zotero is a natural alternative for readers prioritizing a reference manager with broad platform support and a free plan that includes 300 MB storage; its listed 2 GB plan costs 20.00 USD per year.

Lean Library Workspace may suit users who prefer web, mobile and browser-extension access and a free basic tier capped at 3 projects and 3 invitations per shared project, without article or smart citation suggestions. Mendeley Reference Manager is another freemium reference-management option, with its Free plan including 2GB storage and 5 Reading Assistant questions.

EndNote is worth considering for users comparing a separate reference-management product; its Upgrade License is 94.00 USD per once for EndNote 21 or earlier users upgrading to EndNote 2025. Logically offers a free plan with daily AI quotas and 100MB reference and file storage, a better match for someone who wants capped AI access without Sciwand's lifetime licence model. Qiqqa is another freemium option, with a Premium plan shown at 6.67 USD per month.

ReadCube Papers is a paid alternative with an Essentials plan at 10.00 USD per month for one user, five shared libraries and five AI chats per day. RefWorks may suit users whose institution or library provides access through an institutional subscription with custom pricing.

Verdict

Sciwand is a strong choice for researchers who want literature search, paper screening, source analysis and citation-ready writing together, while keeping their library on their own disk. The main reason to choose it is the breadth of that integrated research workflow; the main reason to look elsewhere is that ongoing AI depends on a user-managed key or local models, and its Word add-in is still in beta.
