People make AI music by giving a model a musical brief, generating a draft, then revising its lyrics, sections, sounds or arrangement until it suits the intended use. Some workflows start with text and produce finished audio; others reshape an uploaded track or generate editable MIDI for a digital audio workstation (DAW). The useful choice depends on whether you need a song to listen to, material to edit, or a generation workflow to build into software.
What Happens When You Generate Music With AI?
A text-to-music system turns a description, and sometimes supplied lyrics, into an audio performance. The description can specify a broad style, mood, instruments, vocal approach and structure. The model then produces a take combining musical parts and production into a rendered track. That is different from asking for separate notes or instrument parts: the result may be a finished audio file rather than a project you can rearrange note by note.
Other systems take a musical input. Audio-to-audio tools respond to an uploaded recording or project, while MIDI generators produce editable note data that can be opened and changed in a DAW. These approaches solve different problems: generating a complete track, developing an existing performance, and sketching parts for hands-on arrangement.
How Do You Get A More Useful First Draft?
Write a brief that describes the job the music must do, then add musical details that help distinguish it. For example: “Instrumental background for a quiet puzzle game; restrained, curious mood; soft piano and warm sustained synth; sparse arrangement with room for interface sounds; gradual lift near the end.” This is an example prompt, not a claim that any named tool supports game-specific controls. Check each product for the genres, instruments, durations and controls it actually supports.

For a song with vocals, include the subject, point of view, emotional direction and any lyrics you have written. Separate the musical direction from the lyric text where the tool allows it. A practical brief might say: “Mid-tempo, reflective song about leaving a familiar town; intimate lead vocal, restrained first verse, fuller chorus.” Avoid naming a living performer as a shortcut for vocal identity; use descriptions of musical qualities instead, and only provide a voice recording or other material when you have permission to use it.
What Does A Typical AI Music Workflow Look Like?
- Choose the output. Decide whether you need a vocal song, instrumental, continuation or variation of existing audio, or editable MIDI parts.
- Prepare the input. Write a concise prompt and, if supported and appropriate, add your own lyrics, reference audio or performed sketch. Do not upload recordings or use voice likenesses without consent.
- Generate a few directions. Change one meaningful part of the brief at a time, such as mood, instrumentation or structure. Compare the musical result against the intended use rather than choosing only by the prompt’s wording.
- Revise the weak passage. If the tool supports section editing, regenerate that passage while preserving the parts that work. If it offers stems, separate parts can be brought into a DAW for mixing and arrangement.
- Export and review in context. Listen alongside dialogue, game sounds or other project audio, if relevant. Check the vendor’s current export options, usage terms and supported formats before building a production workflow around them.
Which AI Music Workflow Fits The Job?
| Workflow | What You Start With | What The Listed Tools Support | Useful When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generate a complete song | Text prompt, with lyrics where supported | Suno and Eleven Music generate songs with vocals, lyrics or instrumental tracks; SongIntent can start from an idea, lyric, flow, beat or melody. | You need a fast song draft or want to develop lyrics and musical direction together. |
| Generate an instrumental | Prompt describing musical direction | Soundverse AI Beat Maker generates arranged instrumentals and offers WAV, stem and MIDI exports; Murmur generates instrumental music on iPhone, including offline after model download. | You need an instrumental starting point or material to continue editing. |
| Transform existing audio | An uploaded track, project or audio reference | Aiode responds to uploaded tracks and supports section-level work, stems and DAW drag-and-drop. Eleven Music lists audio references and section editing. | You already have a performance or musical idea to extend or reshape. |
| Generate editable parts or call generation from software | A natural-language description or API request | Aether generates editable MIDI in named layers for a DAW; ACE-Step API provides REST-based audio generation; Shao offers web, API and self-hosted deployment options. | You want note-level editing in a DAW, or you are building a technical workflow around generation. |
These descriptions reflect listed workflows, not guarantees that every tool accepts every prompt or input type. Confirm the specific controls, file formats and deployment requirements with the vendor before choosing a tool for a production pipeline.

How Do You Choose Between Audio, Stems And MIDI?
A finished audio render is simplest to preview and share, but it does not give you the same control as editable musical parts. Stems separate a rendered track into component audio files for mixing or rearrangement. MIDI represents musical events as data, so it is suited to changing notes and parts in a compatible DAW; it is not itself a finished sound recording. Soundverse AI Beat Maker lists MIDI and separated-stem exports, while Aether focuses on editable MIDI. Suno and Aiode list stem workflows.
For a developer integrating generation, an API or self-hosted option changes the shape of the work: you need to consider requests, outputs and deployment rather than only an interactive writing interface. ACE-Step API lists REST generation, and Shao lists API and Docker deployment. The supplied information does not establish the hardware, operating costs or latency that a particular production setup will require, so check those specifics before implementation.

What Should You Check Before Publishing AI Music?
Consent and platform terms matter if a workflow uses a real person’s voice, uploaded recordings, samples or other material you did not create. Get permission for material you use, and check the relevant platform’s terms for generated output, commercial use and any restrictions. Product claims about licensing differ, and a general label such as “royalty-free” does not answer every use case.
Copyright treatment also depends on human contribution and jurisdiction. The U.S. Copyright Office says that material generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, prompts alone do not make someone the author, and human-authored parts of a mixed work may be protected. Applicants registering a work containing more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material must disclose it and describe the human author’s contribution. See the U.S. Copyright Office AI report for the agency’s explanation.

For a project where ownership, licensing or a voice likeness is important, keep track of what you wrote, performed, uploaded and changed, and verify the applicable terms before release. The right workflow is the one whose output format and controls match the amount of editing your project needs.
