The easiest no-extra-app method is an iPhone Shortcut that accepts a video as Media, runs Encode Media with Audio Only enabled, and sends the result to Save File. Run it from Photos or Files, then choose a folder such as On My iPhone or iCloud Drive. This creates a separate audio file and leaves the original video in place.
If you only need the soundtrack inside another movie, iMovie can add a clip as Audio Only or detach audio within a project. iMovie’s documented iPhone workflow is for editing a movie; it does not document a direct export of the detached track as an independent MP3 or M4A file.
Which iPhone method should you use?
| Option | Best for | Output or role | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shortcuts | A standalone file without a third-party app | Audio-only file saved through Files | Initial setup and format choices can vary by iOS release |
| iMovie | Reusing soundtrack in a new movie | Audio Only or detached timeline clip | Not documented as a standalone audio-file exporter on iPhone |
| Extract Audio from Video⁺ | Simple MP3 or M4A conversion | MP3/M4A, trimming and sharing | Free download with in-app purchases; iOS 16.7 or later required |
| Export Audio | Many formats and file controls | AIFC, AIFF, CAF, FLAC, M4A, MP3, MP4 and WAV | Free download with in-app purchases; listing includes an anecdotal ad complaint |
| Photos | Starting with a video stored in the camera library | Passes the local video to a Shortcut or app | Photos itself does not create an audio file |
| Files | Choosing and organizing the result | Stores the converted audio | Files itself does not transcode media |
| Online converter | Devices without a suitable app or Shortcut | Usually a downloadable audio file | Requires uploading the video and may involve limits, accounts or copyright concerns |
For a private lecture, family recording, work video or screen capture, start with Shortcuts because the file can remain on the iPhone. Use a dedicated app when you need a specific format or precise trimming controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat does “extract audio” mean on an iPhone?
The phrase covers three different jobs:
- Create a standalone audio file: Convert the video into an audio-only file and save it in Files. Shortcuts is the built-in route.
- Reuse a soundtrack in another video: Add the source clip as Audio Only in iMovie, or detach its audio from a clip already on the timeline.
- Keep only one section: Trim before encoding, use iMovie’s trim handles, or choose a converter with start and end controls.
This process assumes that the video is already available as a local file or was downloaded through the service’s own lawful controls. It does not turn a streaming URL into a downloadable file or bypass DRM.

1. Shortcuts: best free way to make a standalone file
Shortcuts is the strongest choice when you want an audio file without installing a converter. Apple’s Shortcuts guide identifies Media input as accepting video and audio files: Apple Shortcuts input types. Action names and their placement can differ between iOS versions, so check the labels shown on your iPhone.
Build the Extract Audio shortcut
- Open Shortcuts and tap + to create a shortcut.
- Rename it Extract Audio.
- Open the shortcut’s details or input settings and enable Show in Share Sheet.
- Set the accepted input to Media. If your interface offers it, also allow Files so documents shared from Files can be passed in.
- Tap Add Action, search for Encode Media, and add it.
- Expand the Encode Media action and turn on Audio Only.
- Add Save File after Encode Media.
- Enable Ask Where to Save if you want to choose a destination each time.
- Tap Done.
The important variable path is Shortcut Input → Encode Media → Save File. Save File must receive the output of Encode Media, not the original video input.
Run it from Photos
- Open Photos and select the video.
- Tap Share, scroll through the actions and choose Extract Audio.
- Wait while the shortcut encodes the clip.
- Choose a folder in Files, such as On My iPhone, iCloud Drive or a custom Extracted Audio folder.
- Tap Save.
Run it from Files
- Open Files and locate the video.
- Touch and hold the file, or open it and tap Share.
- Choose Extract Audio.
- Select the destination folder and tap Save.
The resulting filename may be generated automatically. In Files, touch and hold it, choose Rename, and give it a descriptive name. The original video is normally left untouched; play the new file before deleting anything.

2. iMovie: best when the audio belongs in a new movie
iMovie is useful for editing, not as the primary standalone audio exporter. Apple documents adding the complete soundtrack from a video as Audio Only and detaching audio inside a project: Add audio from a video clip and Detach audio on iPhone.
Add a complete soundtrack as Audio Only
- Open iMovie and create or open a movie project.
- Move the playhead to the point where the soundtrack should begin.
- Tap Add Media, then Video, and select the source clip.
- Tap More, then Audio Only.
To use only part of the clip, drag the yellow trim handles first, then choose More → Audio Only. If the clip is in iCloud Photos but not downloaded, iMovie can show a download control before it is available.
Detach audio already on the timeline
- Tap the video clip in the timeline.
- Tap Actions.
- Tap Detach.
iMovie places the detached sound as a separate blue audio clip beneath the video. You can move, mute, edit or delete that clip independently. The cited iPhone instructions do not describe exporting this detached clip as a separate MP3 or M4A file.

3. Extract Audio from Video⁺: simplest MP3/M4A-focused app
Extract Audio from Video⁺ is aimed at one-purpose conversion. Its U.S. App Store listing describes MP3 and M4A extraction, trimming, saving to the device, sharing, and Photos/Files share extensions: App Store listing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Platforms: iPhone and iOS 16.7 or later, according to the U.S. listing.
- Free access and price signals: Free download with displayed in-app purchase prices of $5.99, $9.99, $19.99 and $29.99. The listing should be checked for the current entitlement and billing period before purchase.
- Strengths: A focused interface, MP3/M4A choices, trimming and direct sharing.
- Limits: In-app purchases may gate features; processing a sensitive recording in a third-party app may be less attractive than an on-device Shortcut.
4. Export Audio: broad format and metadata controls
Export Audio is suited to users who need more than a basic MP3. Its App Store page says it extracts audio from QuickTime and MP4 videos, supports start/end selection, custom filenames, metadata and artwork options, and saves to Files: App Store listing.
- Formats listed: AIFC, AIFF, CAF, FLAC, M4A, MP3, MP4 and WAV.
- Pricing: Free download with in-app purchases; the listing does not provide a reliable current price in the available information.
- Best fit: Format-conscious users who need WAV or FLAC-style output, naming controls or precise start/end selection.
- Limits: Review the current purchase screen and advertising behavior before relying on it for frequent work; an App Store user complaint about ads is anecdotal, not a measured result.
5. Photos: the source library, not the converter
Photos is the natural starting point for videos recorded on the iPhone. Select a clip, open the Share Sheet and send it to the Extract Audio shortcut or a compatible converter app. Photos does not itself provide an audio-export command, so installing or building a conversion workflow is still necessary.
If a clip is optimized in iCloud and not stored locally, download it before conversion. A local copy reduces failures caused by an unavailable source file.
6. Files: the reliable destination and fallback source
Files is where a Shortcut can place the finished audio. Choose On My iPhone for device-only storage, iCloud Drive for Apple-device synchronization, or a dedicated folder for easier searching.

7. iOS Share Sheet: the handoff that makes automation work
The Share Sheet is the bridge between Photos or Files and a conversion workflow. A shortcut that accepts only images, text or web pages may not appear when a video is shared. Configure the shortcut for Media, enable Show in Share Sheet, then close and reopen Shortcuts after changing input types.
Share an actual local video file, not a webpage or streaming link. If the shortcut still does not appear, use the Files share route or run the shortcut directly and select the source when prompted.
Which audio format should you choose?
Choose the format based on where the file will be used:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- M4A/AAC: The practical default for iPhone playback and Apple-oriented workflows. It generally keeps file size smaller than uncompressed audio.
- MP3: Use when an older car stereo, website, device or non-Apple application specifically expects MP3.
- WAV or AIFF: Choose for an uncompressed editing workflow when a downstream application requires it. The larger file does not restore detail that was missing from the source.
- FLAC: Use when a lossless file is required and the receiving software supports it. Lossless encoding cannot improve a lossy soundtrack already present in the video.
Do not assume that Audio Only means MP3. Check the format offered by the current Encode Media action or choose an app that explicitly lists MP3. Renaming a file from .mov or .mp4 to .mp3 changes the label, not the encoded data.
How do you extract only part of a video?
For a precise excerpt, trim before conversion. In iMovie, select the video, drag the yellow handles to the desired start and end points, then choose More → Audio Only. This places the selected portion into the movie project.
Shortcuts may require a separate trimming action, depending on the actions available in your iOS version. Dedicated converter apps can expose start and end fields directly; confirm that the app’s trim controls apply before encoding and not merely to playback.

- 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
How do you fix common extraction problems?
The shortcut is missing from the Share Sheet
- Confirm Show in Share Sheet is enabled.
- Set accepted input to Media, not only images, text or web pages.
- Share a local video file rather than a streaming URL.
- Close and reopen Shortcuts after changing input settings.
The video is in iCloud but unavailable
Download the original to the iPhone, then run the shortcut again. iMovie may display a download control for iCloud Photos media that is not local.
The output is still a video
- Open Encode Media and verify that Audio Only is on.
- Check that Encode Media receives Shortcut Input.
- Check that Save File receives Encode Media’s result.
- Do not rely on a manually changed extension as proof of conversion.
The result is silent
Play the original video in Photos first. A silent result can mean the source has no audio track, the track is muted, the codec is unusual, the wrong variable was saved, or the source is protected or damaged.
The file will not play
Try M4A/AAC first for iPhone use, or MP3 for broad compatibility. If the source uses an unusual codec or is damaged, a dedicated converter or desktop tool may be necessary.
A long or high-resolution clip fails
- Free local storage and keep the iPhone connected to power.
- Process a short section to confirm the workflow.
- Download the source locally before encoding.
- Move exceptionally large jobs to a desktop converter.
How should you choose between these options?
- Need one private, standalone file: Build the Shortcuts workflow and save to Files.
- Need soundtrack editing inside a movie: Use iMovie’s Audio Only or Detach commands.
- Need MP3/M4A with minimal setup: Consider Extract Audio from Video⁺, checking its current purchase terms.
- Need WAV, FLAC, metadata or artwork controls: Consider Export Audio and review its current in-app purchase and advertising details.
- Need to process confidential footage: Prefer an on-device Shortcut over an upload-based converter.
- Need only a short excerpt: Trim in iMovie or use an app with explicit start/end controls.
Privacy, copyright and streaming restrictions
A Shortcut can avoid uploading the video, but that is not an absolute privacy guarantee for every app or sharing destination. Review permissions before granting a third-party converter access to Photos or Files, especially for work recordings, medical material or private conversations.
Process videos you created, own, have permission to use or are otherwise entitled to edit. Extracting a soundtrack may be technically possible without being lawful in every situation. The workflow does not bypass DRM, download restrictions or a streaming service’s terms.

Will extracting audio delete my original video?
The normal workflow creates a new audio file and leaves the source video in place. Play the saved result before removing the original.
Why did my Shortcut create M4A instead of MP3?
Audio Only describes the kind of output, not a guaranteed codec. The available format choices depend on the current Encode Media action; choose an app that explicitly offers MP3 when that extension is required.
Can I extract audio from a YouTube or TikTok link?
Not with this local-file workflow. You need a video that is already on the iPhone or was downloaded through the service’s permitted controls, and extraction must comply with the service’s terms and copyright law.
