To increase an image’s resolution, first decide whether you need more pixels for a larger screen image or a specific physical print size. In Photoshop, Image Size changes pixel dimensions only when Resample is enabled; changing a print-resolution value by itself does not create image detail. For a larger, AI-assisted result, Photoshop’s Generative Upscale offers 2× and 4× output, while Lightroom documents Generative Upscale and AI Sharpen. These tools can reconstruct or invent plausible detail, but added pixels are not automatically faithful to the original. The workflow below shows how to choose a target, enlarge it, inspect the result at its intended size, and avoid the common mistake of confusing pixels, inches and pixels per inch.
What does “increase image resolution” actually mean?
Resolution has two related meanings. Pixel dimensions are the width and height of the file, such as 3,000 × 2,000 pixels. Print dimensions are the physical size, such as 10 × 6.67 inches. Pixels per inch (PPI) describes how the available pixels are distributed over that physical size.
If a 3,000-pixel-wide image is printed at 300 PPI, its nominal width is 10 inches. Set the same pixel count to 150 PPI and the nominal width becomes 20 inches, but the file has not gained a single pixel. Photoshop’s documentation separates these controls and explains that changing physical size while holding pixel count decreases or increases the stated resolution proportionally. To create additional pixels, you must resample or use an enlargement feature.

More pixels also do not guarantee more truthful detail. Standard resampling estimates values between existing pixels. Generative systems may reconstruct texture or add creative detail that was never recorded. Treat the enlarged file as a new interpretation of the source, particularly when text, faces, product labels or documentary evidence must remain exact.

How do you increase resolution in Photoshop Image Size?
Use Image Size when you know the output dimensions and want predictable, conventional resampling rather than generated content.
- Open the full-resolution original. Start with the largest, least-compressed file available. A screenshot or repeatedly recompressed JPEG gives the resampler less reliable information.
- Choose Image > Image Size. The dialog shows pixel dimensions, physical dimensions and resolution together. Check the current pixel width and height before changing anything.
- Decide whether the target is pixels or inches. For a website, social post or presentation, enter the required pixel width and height. For a print, enter the intended physical size and a suitable PPI relationship.
- Enable Resample when you need more pixels. With Resample on, changing the dimensions alters pixel dimensions. With it off, Photoshop changes the print-size relationship without adding pixels.
- Enter the target value and apply the change. Keep the aspect ratio locked unless you deliberately want distortion. Enlarging both dimensions multiplies the total pixel count quickly.
- Inspect at the intended viewing size. Check the whole image at 100% and at the size a viewer will actually see. Look for jagged edges, halos, repeated texture and unreadable small type.
- Save a new file. Preserve the original and export a separate enlarged version in the format required by the destination.
Photoshop’s Image Size documentation explains the mechanics, but it does not promise a universal quality outcome for any interpolation setting. A larger file is useful only when the edges, textures and important details remain acceptable for the final use.
When is Photoshop Generative Upscale a better choice?
Generative Upscale is intended for situations where ordinary resampling leaves the image too soft or where you need a substantially larger output. Adobe’s Photoshop help, updated May 20, 2026, directs users to open an image, choose Image > Generative Upscale, select a scale and model, and create the upscale in a new document.

2. Adobe Lightroom: enlargement inside a photo-management workflow

Choose based on the output requirement and the risk of invented detail, not simply on the largest available number.
For web, slides and social graphics
Start with the destination’s required pixel dimensions. Use Image Size with Resample when you want a conventional, predictable enlargement. If edges remain soft, compare a 2× Generative Upscale result, then inspect it at the actual on-screen display size.
For a larger print
Calculate the physical size from the available pixel dimensions and target PPI. If the file is too small, enable Resample or use an enlargement model; changing PPI metadata alone does not add pixels. Examine fine lines and faces at the intended viewing distance, because a wall print is not judged only at 100% zoom.
For text, logos and technical diagrams
Prefer the original vector, layout or high-resolution export whenever possible. AI enlargement can reshape letterforms and symbols, while interpolation can blur them. If you must enlarge a raster, compare the result against the source and proof the text manually.
For portraits and documentary images
Use a preservation-oriented route first and watch eyes, teeth, hair and skin texture for generated artifacts. Do not present reconstructed detail as proof of what the camera recorded.

What problems appear after increasing resolution?
- Softness: The new pixels contain interpolated estimates, so small details may remain indistinct. Try a moderate scale, then apply restrained sharpening at the final output size.
- Halos and ringing: Strong edge enhancement can create bright or dark outlines. Reduce sharpening and compare against the unsharpened enlargement.

How can you check whether the enlarged image is good enough?
- View the complete image at the destination’s approximate size to judge overall clarity and balance.
- View at 100% to find repeated patterns, block edges, halos, broken lettering and unnatural facial features.
- Compare the enlarged result with the original, not with an imagined missing detail.
- Print a small proof when the final output is physical; screen appearance cannot reveal every print-specific problem.
- Keep the original and record which scale, model and output document you selected so you can return to a less aggressive version.
Does increasing resolution improve a blurry or out-of-focus photo?
It can make the file larger and may improve perceived edges, but it cannot reliably recover motion blur or focus detail that was never captured. AI may draw a plausible replacement for missing structure, so verify important subjects against another source before treating the result as accurate.
Bottom line: what is the safest way to enlarge an image?

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I increase image resolution by changing DPI or PPI alone?
No. Changing the PPI value changes how existing pixels map to a physical size; it does not create additional pixels. Enable resampling or use an enlargement feature when the file itself must become larger.
Is 2× or 4× upscaling always better?
No. A 4× output can magnify artifacts and generated mistakes as well as useful structure. Select the smallest scale that meets the destination’s dimensions, then compare the result at the intended viewing size.
What resolution do I need for a specific print size?
Work backward from the print dimensions and the pixel dimensions you have. Photoshop’s Image Size dialog shows the relationship among inches, PPI and pixels; if the required pixel count exceeds the source, resampling or AI enlargement is necessary.
Why does enlarged text look wrong?
Raster enlargement estimates or synthesizes letter shapes, so small type can become soft or malformed. Whenever possible, return to the original layout or vector artwork and export a new high-resolution version instead of enlarging the raster.
Should I keep the original after upscaling?
