You can make a YouTube Short entirely in the YouTube mobile app or upload a prepared square or vertical video through the app or YouTube Studio. For standard channels, a qualifying Short is no longer than three minutes, and YouTube accepts uploads up to 1080p. A phone is enough to start; the important work is choosing a format, setting the audience and privacy correctly, and using only material you have permission to publish.
This guide covers both creation routes, the current three-minute rule, desktop and mobile upload steps, copyright checks, analytics terminology, and what monetization actually depends on.
Which way should you use to make a YouTube Short?
Choose the in-app route when you want to record clips and assemble them immediately. Upload an existing file when you have already filmed or edited elsewhere and want more control over the finished cut.

| Record in YouTube | Quick, phone-first clips and simple edits | YouTube mobile app | Open Create → Short, record one or more clips, adjust them, choose settings, then publish or save a draft. |
| Upload a prepared clip | Footage edited before you open YouTube | YouTube mobile app or YouTube Studio on a computer | Select a square or vertical file no longer than three minutes, complete its details, choose visibility and audience settings, then publish. |
Neither official workflow promises better reach or quality. The practical difference is where you want to record and edit.

How do I record a Short in the YouTube app?
YouTube’s mobile creation flow lets you record, edit and upload without special equipment. Sign in to the YouTube app before starting.
- Tap Create, then select Short.
- Set the recording duration if you need a clip longer than the current default.
- Hold the Capture button to record continuously, or tap it to start and tap again to stop. You can record separate segments in one Short.
- Use the editor’s available music, filters and effects if they suit the idea. If you remove the previous segment, use the restore option when you need it back.
- Review the complete sequence before leaving the editor. Check that the first frame makes sense without context and that speech remains understandable.
- Continue to the upload screen, enter the title and other details, set the audience, choose visibility, and publish. You can save a draft instead if you are not ready.
YouTube says, “You don’t need any special equipment to get started! You can record, edit, and upload all from your phone.” A tripod, microphone or light can be optional convenience equipment, but none is required by the official workflow.
How do I upload a video that I already made?
A prepared clip can be uploaded from the YouTube app or from Studio on a computer. The file must meet the current Shorts conditions for your standard channel: it is square or vertical and no longer than three minutes.

- Open YouTube and tap Create.
- Choose the option to upload a video, then select the prepared clip from your device.
- Adjust the clip in the available editor if necessary, and continue to the details screen.
- Add the title, select the made-for-kids audience setting, choose visibility, and publish or save a draft.
Upload from a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Create → Upload videos.
- Choose one or more files. YouTube allows multiple videos to be selected in one upload session, but each draft still needs its own details completed.
- For each video, complete the title and other details, set the audience, select a visibility option, and finish publishing.
The desktop path is useful when your source file is already on a computer or when typing titles and reviewing details is easier with a larger screen. The upload route does not remove the format, length, copyright or audience requirements.
What format and length does a YouTube Short need?
For standard YouTube channels, videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 are categorized as Shorts when they use a square or vertical aspect ratio and run for no more than three minutes. YouTube’s current upload guidance lists 1080p as the maximum upload resolution; it does not require one specific pixel dimension or one exact vertical ratio.
A video uploaded before October 15, 2024 remains long-form under the cited classification rule. Official Artist Channels have a separate effective date: the three-minute classification applies to qualifying videos uploaded on or after December 8, 2025. If your channel is an Official Artist Channel, use the channel-specific guidance on YouTube’s three-minute Shorts help page.
For the standard channel rules and current resolution guidance, see YouTube’s Shorts creation guide and the computer upload instructions.

What should I check before publishing?
The final screen is where a technically correct video can still be mispublished. Complete every setting deliberately rather than accepting an inherited default.
- Title and details: Describe the actual clip clearly. Avoid promising something the video does not show.
- Audience: Choose whether the video is made for kids. This is a required audience decision, not a reach tactic.
- Visibility: Select public, private or unlisted. Public makes the Short available according to YouTube’s normal discovery systems; private limits it to you; unlisted lets people with the link view it without making it broadly public.
- Draft or test upload: Use private or unlisted visibility while learning the process. YouTube’s upload tips specifically point to a test upload as a way to check the flow before making a video public.
Default privacy depends on age. For creators aged 13–17, YouTube sets the default to private; for creators 18 or older, the default is public. Check the setting on every upload instead of assuming the account’s default matches your intent. The relevant guidance is in YouTube’s Shorts upload tips.
How can I avoid copyright problems with Shorts?
Only upload footage, music, images and other material that you created yourself or are authorized to use on YouTube. A file made in another app is not automatically cleared for publication just because it exports successfully.
YouTube can remove a Short after a valid complete takedown notice, and a removal may result in a copyright strike. Shorts longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim are subject to the claim rules described in YouTube’s current three-minute guidance; those rules can change, so check the live three-minute Shorts page when a claim appears.

Before publishing, ask three questions:
- Do I own every recorded element, or do I have permission that covers YouTube use?
- Does a license cover the full edit, including music underneath speech and any background screen content?
- Can I show proof of permission if a rights holder disputes the upload?
Do not assume that cropping, speeding up or adding captions makes someone else’s work original. Those changes do not by themselves grant permission.
How are Shorts views counted now?
YouTube changed the public Shorts view count on March 31, 2025. The current view count includes starts and replays without a minimum watch-time requirement. YouTube retained the earlier metric under the name Engaged views, which remains available in Analytics.
That distinction matters when you compare a public view total with performance or monetization reports. A high public count is not the same measurement as the engaged-view figure used for YouTube Partner Program eligibility and Shorts ad-revenue sharing. YouTube explains the metric change in its Shorts creation and analytics guidance and its Shorts monetization policies.

How does Shorts monetization work?
Views alone do not guarantee payment. To share Shorts Feed ad revenue, a creator must be an eligible monetizing partner and accept the Shorts Monetization Module.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYouTube describes a pool-based system rather than a fixed amount per view:
- Advertising revenue from the Shorts Feed is pooled.
- The Creator Pool is calculated using eligible engaged views and music usage.
- In each country, the pool is allocated according to creators’ shares of eligible engaged views.
- The creator receives 45% of the amount allocated to that creator.
The 45% figure is a stated share after allocation, not a per-view rate or an earnings forecast. Some views are ineligible, including examples such as fake views, non-original uploads and content that fails advertiser-friendly guidelines. Read the current policy at YouTube Shorts monetization policies.
YouTube’s channel monetization policy also clarifies that “repetitious content” was renamed inauthentic content in July 2025. Repetitive or mass-produced material remains ineligible under the existing policy. Templates and repeatable editing workflows can save time, but each published Short still needs meaningful original creative value; automation is not a monetization guarantee. The policy language is on YouTube’s channel monetization policies page.
How should I choose between recording in-app and uploading a prepared file?
Use the simplest route that matches where your creative work already happens.
| If you need to… | Choose… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Capture a spontaneous idea immediately | Record in the YouTube app | Recording, basic effects and publishing stay on the phone. |
| Combine camera footage, screen captures or several audio tracks before posting | Upload a prepared clip | You can finish the edit before opening YouTube, then use Studio or the app only for publishing. |
| Check how a video looks without making it public | Either route with private or unlisted visibility | You can inspect the upload and settings before public release. |
| Publish from a computer | YouTube Studio upload | The desktop path is designed for selecting files and completing each video’s details. |
There is no requirement to buy a camera, microphone, lighting kit or editing program. Start with the equipment you have, then add accessories only when a specific problem—such as shaky framing or difficult audio—justifies one.
What can go wrong when a Short does not appear as expected?
The upload is treated as a regular video
Check the upload date, orientation and duration. For a standard channel, the current classification requires a square or vertical video no longer than three minutes, and the rule applies to qualifying uploads from October 15, 2024 onward.

The public view number seems unusually high or low compared with older reports
Make sure you are comparing the same metric. Since March 31, 2025, public Shorts views include starts and replays, while Engaged views remains the separate Analytics metric used for YPP eligibility and revenue sharing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a YouTube Short with footage from a dedicated camera?
Yes. Record with any camera you already own, transfer the file to a phone or computer, and upload it through the app or YouTube Studio. The file still needs to meet the square-or-vertical and three-minute conditions for standard-channel Shorts classification.
Is 1080p required for every Short?
No. YouTube lists 1080p as the maximum upload resolution in its current Shorts guidance, not as a minimum. A lower-resolution file can still be uploaded, although the source quality will affect how clear the finished video looks.

Yes. A private upload lets you inspect the file and its settings without making it publicly available. An unlisted upload is another test option when you need to view it through a shareable link.
Will repeating one successful template guarantee monetization?
No. YouTube’s inauthentic-content policy says repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible. A consistent format is compatible with monetization only when the individual videos provide original creative value and meet the rest of the YPP policies.
