How to Master AI-Generated Music: A Practical Workflow

To master AI-generated music, first choose a clean, finished mix, listen for artifacts and balance problems, then make a small number of level-matched mastering comparisons. Use a stereo mastering workflow for a finished song; use stems only when you need to correct a specific part and your tool supports that workflow. A mastering tool can shape the supplied audio, but the listed product details do not establish that any tool specifically detects or repairs AI-generation artifacts.

Prepare The AI-Generated Track Before Mastering

Start with the highest-quality finished mix your generator can export. If you can export stems, keep them too, but do not assume a mastering service accepts or processes them. Avoid judging a master while the source mix is clipping or while obvious clicks, abrupt edits, unwanted sounds, or unstable vocals remain; go back to the generator or mix stage when those need repair.

For a new generation, write a prompt around the role the track must play. For example: “Instrumental background music for a quiet coding tutorial, restrained energy, no lead vocal, a steady pulse, and a clear ending.” Treat this as a creative brief, not a guaranteed control set: prompt fields and exact-prompt generation vary by generator. If the chosen service does not support a detail, check its site rather than assuming it will follow it.

  • Keep the original export unchanged so you can compare it with every master.
  • Listen from beginning to end, including the intro, transitions, vocal entrances, and ending. Note the time and description of each audible issue.
  • Decide where the track will be used and whether you need a stereo master or separate control over vocals, bass, drums, or instruments.
  • Choose a reference track only if your mastering tool supports reference matching. Compare overall tone and dynamics at a similar playback level, not just which version sounds louder.

Master The Track In A Repeatable Pass

  1. Pick one source version. If the generator produced several candidates, choose the one with the strongest arrangement and fewest audible defects. Mastering is not a reliable way to repair a weak generation.
  2. Make a first master with restrained settings. Start with the tool’s suggested or default processing. If it offers intensity, EQ, dynamics, or tone controls, change one at a time and keep notes.
  3. Compare at matched loudness. Switch between the original and master at similar perceived volume. Check whether the master improves clarity and balance without making the vocal, bass, or transients feel harsh or flattened.
  4. Inspect any questionable passage. Replay the exact section you noted earlier. If processing makes an artifact more obvious, try a gentler setting or return to the source mix.
  5. Export and check the file. Listen to the exported file, not only a browser preview or plugin playback. Confirm that its beginning and ending are intact and that it plays in the destination workflow. Export formats and verification options vary by product; check the vendor’s site for specifics.

Choose A Mastering Route That Fits The Mix

Tool Useful fit Established controls or workflow Limit to account for
iZotope Ozone DAW-based work where you want detailed control Ozone Advanced includes 20 mastering modules; Stem EQ separately processes vocals, bass, drums, and instruments; supports AU, AAX, and VST3 plug-in formats. Stem EQ is a processing option, not evidence that the source generator can export usable stems. Ozone hosts are limited to macOS and Windows.
LANDR Mastering Plugin Comparing a master while the track plays in a DAW Real-time AI mastering with metering, gain matching, EQ, dynamics, and stereo width; supports VST3, AU, and AAX on Windows and macOS. Requires a compatible DAW, and batch mastering is not part of the listed workflow.
Mixea Trying multiple mastering variations on a finished track Generates 15 mastering options per uploaded track, with adjustable intensity and EQ; exports 24-bit, 48 kHz HD WAV files plus WAV and MP3. It focuses on complete-track mastering; reference matching and loudness-target controls are not documented.
AudioMuse AI Music Mastering Preparing an individual finished stereo mix for a streaming service Provides loudness targets for Apple, Spotify, Tidal, and other platforms, and a free 30-second preview before downloading the full master. It accepts finished stereo mixes rather than stems; a reference-track workflow is not verified.
AI Master My Song A quick browser comparison when you do not need analysis controls Free masters without an account; accepts WAV, MP3, and FLAC uploads; lets you compare versions and download streaming-ready files. It has no analysis controls or integrations. Specific export settings are not established here.

Decide Whether The Problem Is In The Mix Or The Master

Use the master to adjust the overall presentation of a finished stereo mix. If only one element is wrong—for example, a vocal masks the melody or the bass overwhelms the kick—return to the mix or use a verified stem workflow. Ozone’s Stem EQ is one listed option for separate stem processing; do not infer that other tools in the table provide the same capability.

For a release target, use a service’s stated loudness target when it offers one, then check the downloaded file in the intended playback context. The tools listed here do not establish a single ideal loudness value for every genre, platform, or use, so do not copy a target without confirming it fits your release requirements.

Check Rights And Vendor Details Before Release

Before publishing, confirm the generator’s terms cover your intended use of the music, and get consent for any voice or source recording you upload. Check each mastering service’s terms for uploads, output, and commercial use; the available product details do not establish those terms for every service. Also verify current supported formats, export settings, and any genre-specific guidance on the vendor’s site.
