How to Start Making EDM Music With AI: A Practical Workflow

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with an instrumental draft, then shape its drums, bass, synth layers and section changes in an editable workspace. For a DAW-based workflow, Beat Shaper is the clearest starting point in this tool set: it generates editable drums, basslines, synths, loops and arrangements, and offers MIDI, audio, stem and DAW project export options. The available product information does not confirm which EDM styles any of these tools support, so check the vendor’s site before relying on a particular subgenre or sound.

What An EDM Draft Needs

EDM is built around rhythmic momentum and changes in energy. A useful first draft needs a steady pulse, a kick and bass relationship that leaves room for each part, repeating rhythmic or melodic hooks, and section changes that make a build feel different from a drop. The details vary across house, techno, trance, drum and bass and other styles; those names are starting points for describing a target, not evidence that a product supports them.

AI can help get a starting arrangement onto the screen, but a complete generated song may not give you the separate parts or timing control you want. If your goal is to learn production, favor editable parts or exports you can continue working with. If your goal is to sketch an idea quickly, a complete instrumental can be a useful reference, provided you can export it in a format that fits your next step.

Choose A Starting Workflow

Tool Useful Starting Point Known Constraints
Beat Shaper Editable drums, basslines, synths, loops and arrangements; piano-roll editing; MIDI, WAV, MP3, stem and DAW project exports. Runs in a browser. Starter downloads are MP3 only and non-commercial. Ableton Live project export and real-time MIDI require Producer.
Soundverse AI Beat Maker Full instrumentals with drums, basslines, melodies and arrangements; WAV mixes, separated stems and MIDI; browser-based multitrack studio. Free Tier starts with 1,000 tokens upon signup. The product focuses on complete instrumentals rather than one-bar loop creation.
Suno Complete songs with vocals, lyrics and instrumentation; editing, remixing, extensions, section replacement and stem export. Free Plan has no commercial rights or stem separation. Pro limits downloads to 20 songs per month; Suno Studio is limited to Premier.

Choose Beat Shaper if you want to adjust generated parts and carry material into a DAW. Choose Soundverse AI Beat Maker if a complete instrumental and multitrack editing suit your starting point. Suno can help you sketch a whole song, including vocals, but its free plan does not provide stem separation. The listed capabilities do not establish EDM genre coverage or a dedicated EDM template for any of them; check the vendor’s site for those specifics.

Build Your First EDM Sketch

  1. Describe the target before prompting. Write down the subgenre you want to explore, the mood, whether the track is instrumental, what the main hook should do, and how energy should change from the opening to the drop. Use concrete musical language you can evaluate, such as “a short, repeating synth hook” or “a restrained opening that grows into a full-energy section.” These are prompt ideas, not claims about a product’s preset library.
  2. Generate an instrumental foundation. In Beat Shaper, request a drum, bass and synth arrangement and use its genre, mood, energy and syncopation controls to steer the draft. Its listed controls do not confirm an EDM genre option, so inspect the available choices and check its site if your intended style is absent. In Soundverse AI Beat Maker, request a complete instrumental and check whether its result provides the separate parts you need. For Suno, describe an instrumental track in the prompt; do not assume that a specific EDM style or production control is available.
  3. Listen for the groove before adding detail. Check whether the kick and bass feel compatible, whether the hook is easy to remember, and whether the arrangement has room to build. If a result feels crowded, simplify the prompt and generate again with fewer competing elements. The tools’ listed capabilities do not promise that any generated part will have the timing, sound or structure you want.
  4. Make the section contrast intentional. Ask for a quieter opening, a rising build, a clear drop and a less dense breakdown as arrangement goals. Treat those words as instructions to try, not verified controls. Listen through the transitions: if the drop does not feel stronger, change the contrast between sections rather than adding more layers everywhere.
  5. Export according to the next task. In Beat Shaper, choose MIDI if you want to continue editing notes, stems if you need separate audio parts, or a DAW project when your plan and export needs support it. Soundverse AI Beat Maker lists MIDI, WAV mixes and separated stems for further editing. Suno supports stem export, subject to its plan limits. Confirm that the available file type fits your DAW before building a workflow around it.
  6. Refine one problem at a time. Adjust the bass, hook, drum pattern or section transition separately so you can hear what each change does. Keep a copy of a draft you like before trying a more ambitious variation. The product details establish generation and editing options, but do not establish a particular set of EDM mix controls; check each vendor’s site for specifics.

Use Prompts That Give The Arrangement A Job

A prompt works better as a compact production brief than as a list of vague adjectives. Describe the role of each major part, then state how the energy should change. For example: “Instrumental electronic dance track with a steady kick, bass that leaves space for the kick, a short repeating synth hook, a sparse opening, a rising build, a high-energy drop, and a breakdown that brings the hook back with fewer layers.” This is a prompt example, not a guarantee that a tool can follow every instruction or render a particular subgenre.

For a more restrained direction, try: “Instrumental club track, dark mood, tight drums, pulsing bass, minimal repeating motif, gradual build, controlled drop, no vocals.” For a more melodic direction, try: “Instrumental electronic dance track, bright mood, memorable synth melody, steady drums, rising energy into the drop, breakdown with the melody exposed.” These briefs avoid claiming a particular tempo, preset, genre control or sound library. If a tool returns vocals or an arrangement that does not fit, narrow the prompt and try again; do not assume it has a dedicated instrumental or EDM setting unless the vendor confirms it.

Know What The Export And Rights Allow

Beat Shaper lists Starter downloads as MP3 only and non-commercial; its Creator plan lists MIDI, MP3 and WAV downloads and commercial usage rights. Suno’s Free Plan does not include commercial rights or stem separation. Soundverse’s listed Creator & Pro plan includes stem export and commercial licenses, but the available details do not specify the full licensing terms. Review the current terms for the plan you use before releasing or monetizing a track, and check the vendor’s site for any use case not clearly covered.

If you add a real person’s voice, upload a recording, or create a cover or voice imitation, get the necessary consent and follow the relevant platform’s terms. The product information here does not establish permission to use someone else’s voice, recording or composition. Keep your own prompt notes and source files with the project so you can track what you created and which plan and terms applied.

When The First Result Is Not Enough

Use the first generation to identify what needs work: groove, bass movement, hook, energy curve or section contrast. Then revise that one target and regenerate or edit, rather than changing every instruction at once. For a learning project, bring editable MIDI or stems into your DAW if your chosen tool and plan provide them. For a quick concept, a complete instrumental may be enough to judge the arrangement. In either case, treat AI output as a draft to evaluate, and verify genre support, export access and rights with the vendor before committing to a production or release workflow.
