How To Use AI To Make Music: A Practical Workflow

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use AI as a sequence of music-making jobs: define the brief, draft lyrics or a melody, generate several arrangements, edit the strongest sections, export parts, and finish the mix. A practical setup is Suno or Udio for song sketches, RHYMEBOOK or LyricDraft for words, Soundverse AI Beat Maker for instrumental and MIDI work, and iZotope Ozone for a DAW-based master.

Define The Song Before Opening A Generator

Write a one-paragraph brief so every generation answers the same musical question. Include the purpose, emotional arc, approximate duration, vocal or instrumental requirement, key images, and what must change between sections. For example: “Create a two-minute instrumental for a coding tutorial intro. Start sparse, add a brighter bass movement at the midpoint, leave space for narration, and end with a clean four-bar tail.” This is a creative specification, not a claim that a particular service will obey every detail.

  • Structure: intro, verse, chorus, bridge, drop, or outro.
  • Sound sources: drums, bass, pads, piano, guitar, vocal, or sound effects.
  • Constraints: instrumental only, no spoken words, short sections, or room for dialogue.
  • Deliverables: full mix, stems, MIDI, lyric text, or a reference-ready WAV.

Pick A Starting Tool

Job Tool Useful Capability Plan Detail
Complete song sketch Suno Vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, editing, extensions, section replacement, and stem export Free plan; paid from $8/mo
Prompt-led vocal editing Udio Text or lyric generation, lyric edits, voice references, extensions, transformations, and Sessions Free plan; paid from $10/mo; 7-day trial
Instrumental with editable parts Soundverse AI Beat Maker Full arrangements, separated stems, WAV mixes, and MIDI export Free signup includes 1,000 tokens
Lyric planning RHYMEBOOK Genre, mood, theme, structure, rhyme tools, and collaboration Free plan with 25 AI suggestions/month
Structured lyric drafts LyricDraft Verse, chorus, bridge drafts, rewrites, supplied-line preservation, and version history Free access is a one-time 18-credit pack; paid from $5/mo

Choose one generator for the first pass instead of copying the same prompt everywhere. Move to another tool when you need a different output type, such as MIDI or a lyric rewrite. Features not listed here, including a specific key, BPM behavior, file length, or export format, should be confirmed on the vendor’s current page.

Follow This AI Music Workflow

  1. Draft the lyric or outline. In RHYMEBOOK, enter the theme, mood, and structure, then review rhyme suggestions rather than accepting the first draft. In LyricDraft, provide any lines that must remain unchanged and ask for a verse, chorus, and bridge around them. Keep a plain-text copy of every accepted line.
  2. Make a concise generation prompt. State the format first, then arrangement, performance, and transitions. Example: “Instrumental electronic cue, restrained opening, syncopated drums after eight bars, warm bass, clear middle break for narration, decisive four-bar ending.” For a vocal song, add the point of view and section labels. Avoid naming a living artist as a style shortcut; describe the musical traits you want.
  3. Generate multiple candidates. Change one variable per attempt: drum density, vocal delivery, harmonic color, or section order. Label files with the prompt version and date so you can compare them without relying on memory.
  4. Choose by function. Keep the take whose hook, arrangement, and ending serve the brief. A technically impressive texture can still be wrong if it masks narration or leaves no usable intro. Write down the exact time ranges you want to retain.
  5. Edit the form. Suno supports editing, remixing, extensions, section replacement, and stem export. Udio provides lyric editing, blending of voice references, audio extension or transformation, and refinement in Sessions. Use those controls to repair one section instead of regenerating the entire track. Udio currently disables audio, video, and stem downloads during its transition period, so check the current download status before choosing it for a delivery deadline.
  6. Separate parts when the mix needs control. Soundverse AI Beat Maker exports separated stems and MIDI, while Suno lists stem export. Bring the files into your DAW, name each stem, and mute competing parts under dialogue. If a service offers a format or stem type that is not stated in its listing, verify it before building your session around it.
  7. Do a human arrangement pass. Trim silence, move transitions, simplify crowded sections, and replace words that sound unclear. AI output is a starting performance; your edits determine the final pacing and message.
  8. Master the finished mix. iZotope Ozone provides mastering modules, Master Assistant, Assistive Vocal Balance, and separate processing for vocals, bass, drums, and instruments. It supports AU, AAX, and VST3 plug-ins in macOS and Windows hosts. Compare the processed version with your unmastered mix at matched loudness, then export the format your distribution workflow requires.

Use Prompt Patterns That Produce Repeatable Results

Instrumental Background Cue

“Instrumental background music for a software demo; calm opening; light percussion and rounded bass; leave the center frequency range open for speech; add a modest lift at the midpoint; finish with a short, clean tail.” Generate versions with only one changed instruction, such as “more rhythmic” or “sparser under dialogue.”

Vocal Song With A Clear Form

“Verse, pre-chorus, chorus, second verse, chorus, bridge, final chorus; first-person lyric about rebuilding a project after a failed release; conversational verse, wider chorus, instrumental bridge; end after the final chorus.” Supply your own lines when their wording matters, then inspect every generated lyric for meaning and unwanted text.

Beat And MIDI Sketch

“Four-minute instrumental foundation; drums, bassline, chord progression, and a simple lead; leave a four-bar gap every 16 bars for a live part; export separated stems and MIDI if available.” Soundverse is the listed fit for this stem-and-MIDI workflow; confirm the current export options before committing to a session format.

Handle Voices, Samples, And Rights Carefully

Use only vocals, recordings, and reference audio that you have permission to submit. Read the platform’s current terms before releasing a track: Suno’s Free Plan does not include commercial rights; Eleven Music’s Free plan is personal-use and its commercial rights vary by plan; Loudly says licensing depends on the selected plan; and Soundverse lists commercial licenses under Creator & Pro. These statements do not establish rights for other plans or uses.

Copyright status also depends on human contribution. The U.S. Copyright Office says material generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, prompts alone do not make someone the author, and only human-authored parts of a mixed work can be protected. If a registration contains more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material, applicants must disclose it and describe the human contribution. Keep your lyric drafts, arrangement edits, recorded parts, and version history so you can identify what you created.

Deliver A Clean Project

  • Save the final prompt, source lyrics, selected generations, and edit notes.
  • Keep the full mix and each exported stem in a clearly named folder.
  • Write down the tool, plan, date, and permission terms attached to the version you intend to publish.
  • Listen on headphones and speakers, checking vocal clarity, low-end buildup, clipped peaks, abrupt cuts, and speech masking.
  • Before publication, recheck current download, commercial-use, and platform terms because the listed services can change those conditions.
