Product
0docs is an open-source, self-hostable documentation platform with a block-based editor, theming, versioning, and an AI “Ask docs” feature.
License
The project is released under the MIT License.
Block editor
The editor supports blocks including callouts, steps, code tabs, cards, accordions, and API endpoints.
Publishing
Users can snapshot documentation as versions, publish it, and use a custom domain.
AI feature
The “Ask docs” feature is enabled by setting an OpenAI API key, and the repository also documents an OpenAI-compatible base URL override.
Agent integration
0docs provides a built-in MCP endpoint that AI clients can use to read and edit documentation, with per-project tokens or anonymous read-only access.
Deployment
The project documents deployment on Railway and local installation using Docker and pnpm.
Database
A PostgreSQL database is required, and uploaded media is stored in PostgreSQL by default or can use S3-compatible storage.
Authentication
0docs includes email and password authentication with server-side sessions, and public signup can be disabled after initial setup.
Upload limit
The documented default maximum upload size is 20 MB per upload.
Email setup
SMTP is optional for password-reset and invite emails; without SMTP, reset and invite links are printed to server logs.
Security operations
The self-hosting guide recommends production HTTPS, PostgreSQL backups, and setting NODE_ENV=production to enable the Secure cookie flag.
