What Azure Synapse Analytics is

Azure Synapse Analytics is a cloud service for analytics workloads, combining data-lake queries, SQL warehousing, Apache Spark processing and interactive log analysis. Serverless SQL pools query data in Azure Data Lake without provisioned infrastructure, charging according to data processed by queries. Dedicated SQL pools provide provisioned warehouse compute, with pay-as-you-go operation that can be paused or reserved capacity for one or three years. Apache Spark plans include memory-optimized processing for data engineering, preparation and machine learning, plus GPU-accelerated processing for machine-learning workloads. Data Explorer compute handles interactive log and telemetry analysis, including time-series and semi-structured data queries. Synapse separates storage and compute and supports data lakes, streaming ingestion and in-database machine learning. The service is accessed on the web and uses cloud deployment. It is paid, has no free plan, and pricing is available on request. Its listed plans cover several approaches to querying, processing and warehousing data.

Who it suits

Synapse suits teams needing cloud analytics across data lakes, SQL warehouses, Spark workloads, streaming ingestion or telemetry analysis.
