The record

Purpose: MGFC provides a mobile technology platform for charitable donations to registered charities in Canada.
Donation method: Donors text a charity’s keyword to a short code and confirm the donation, which is charged to their mobile phone bill.
Platform services: MGFC validates charity eligibility, provisions and tests campaign keywords, tracks donations, consolidates carrier payments, and enables official tax receipts.
Donation amounts: The donor page lists one-time donation amounts of $5, $10, $20, or $25 and a limit of $100 per 30 consecutive days.
Funds passed through: MGFC says wireless providers do not retain a portion of text donations and 100% is remitted to the beneficiary charity.
Eligible organizations: Only registered charities and some other qualified donees defined by the Canada Revenue Agency are eligible to run mobile giving programs.
Charity standards: A charity generally needs an m4 rating or higher to solicit through the mobile channel; charities rated below m4 may participate if sponsored by MGFC or a similar qualified registered charity.
Campaign pricing: Campaign pricing is determined with the selected application service provider based on services needed, and minimum costs depend on the number of campaigns in market per calendar month.
Application and launch: MGFC says review and approval typically take no longer than five business days, while a program can take a minimum of two weeks from application to going live.
Remittance: MGFC holds funds in a trust account during reconciliation and guarantees remittance within 30 days after receiving funds from all participating wireless providers for a month.
Donor data use: Transaction reports include the donor’s mobile number, transaction status and timestamp, campaign keyword, and short code; charities may use this information for internal reporting only.
Prohibited campaigns: Campaigns that use a text donation as entry to a contest, sweepstakes, draw, or prize are prohibited.
Carrier availability: The donor page lists BCE brands, Eastlink, Freedom Mobile, Rogers brands, TELUS brands, and Videotron brands as supporting providers.
Support: MGFC provides stakeholder support and lists weekday contact hours of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
