Purpose: MRTG monitors traffic load on network links and generates HTML pages with PNG images showing that traffic.
Monitoring: MRTG uses SNMP to read router traffic counters and can monitor any SNMP variable or data gathered by an external program.
Graphs: It creates daily, seven-day, five-week, and twelve-month traffic views.
Data retention: Its consolidated log retains relevant traffic data for the last two years without growing over time.
Scale: The documentation says MRTG can monitor 200 or more network links from a halfway decent UNIX box.
SNMP support: MRTG includes a Perl SNMP implementation and supports SNMPv2c 64-bit counters.
Configuration: MRTG includes tools for automatic configuration and setup, and its generated webpage appearance is configurable.
Integration: MRTG has built-in hooks for using RRDtool.
Platforms: The maker describes MRTG as written in Perl and working on Unix/Linux and Windows; its download page offers tar.gz archives for Unix and ZIP files for Windows.
License: MRTG is available under the GNU General Public License.
Support: The maker lists user, announcement, and developer mailing lists, plus Usenet and IRC discussion channels.
Setup requirement: The Windows installation guide says MRTG requires a current copy of Perl.
