Supported returns: The standalone documentation lists federal returns and 42 supported state returns, with federal and state computed together.
Tax year and scope: The limitations page says OpenTax supports Tax Year 2025, is for individual filers, and does not support business returns or prior-year returns.
Filing output: OpenTax generates IRS-ready PDFs to download, print, and mail; e-filing support is described as being on the roadmap.
Explainability: Computed values can be traced to source documents, IRS citations, and the intermediate calculations that produced them.
Validation: The Trust Center reports 2,300+ automated tests and 10 validated tax scenarios.
Privacy: The privacy policy says OpenTax does not collect or transmit personal or tax data, and stores return data in the user's browser IndexedDB.
Integration: The OpenClaw plugin provides 16 tools, REST endpoints, and server-sent event streaming for compatible AI agents.
Developer API: Developers can use TaxService directly in Node.js to create returns, compute results, and trace return lines.
Notable limits: The limitations page says multi-state returns are unsupported, and e-filing, farming income, foreign income reporting, and business returns are not covered.
