Overview

Editsub is a browser-based subtitle editor for people who want to revise existing captions or create and translate subtitles without installing a desktop editor. It is most compelling for occasional projects and teams that need to work together; frequent users should weigh its separate file-size caps and credit costs before relying on it.

It combines subtitle editing, timing, format conversion, transcription and AI translation in one workspace. The free transcription allowance is useful for short clips, while credit-based work and the modest upload limit for subtitle files make it less suited to high-volume editing.

Key features

Editing and timing

The editor supports SRT, VTT, SBV, SUB, ASS and SSA, with SRT and VTT export. Frame-accurate timing, batch shifting, waveform synchronization and real-time preview give users options for both cue-level adjustments and track-wide corrections. That is a practical range for working on existing subtitles, though subtitle-file uploads are capped at 10MB.

Transcription and translation

Local audio or video up to 10 minutes can be transcribed free without an account. Longer transcription and translation use credits, so short jobs can be tried without committing, but repeated or lengthy work can bring ongoing usage costs. AI translation covers more than 100 languages.

The video-to-subtitle workflow accepts common audio and video formats including MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, AAC, FLAC, OPUS, WEBM, MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, M4V and WMV, with a maximum media size of 3072MB. That is a much larger allowance than the cap for subtitle-file uploads, so the two workflows suit different file sizes.

AI co-pilot and collaboration

The co-pilot flags reading-speed, timing, overlap, gap, line-length and transcription issues, and can fix or rewrite cues. It can speed up routine cleanup, but editors who need exact wording and timing should review suggested changes. Multiple users can work on one project simultaneously through a shared project link, which is useful for collaborative review without requiring everyone to edit in isolation.

Privacy and support

Subtitle files processed in a browser session without an account are not stored on EditSub's servers. Account files are stored securely and accessible only to the user. EditSub says transmissions are encrypted and that it does not share personal information or subtitle content with third parties. Users can report bugs or suggest features through the in-app Feedback button or by emailing support. Users retain rights to subtitles they create and may use them personally or commercially.

Pricing

The Free plan is free and allows 10 subtitle files. It is a sensible starting point for occasional editing, but it does not remove the 10-minute free transcription threshold: longer transcription and translation require credits.

Pro costs 48.00 USD per year, billed at $48 per year, and includes 1,500 credits per month, approximately 13 hours of transcription. It is the clearest fit for regular users who expect recurring transcription or translation needs. The published entry price is $4/user/mo on an annual basis, so the annual commitment matters for anyone who only needs the tool briefly.

One-time credit packs offer an alternative to an annual plan: Starter credit pack costs 5.00 USD per month as a one-time pack and includes 1,000 credits; Standard credit pack costs 20.00 USD per month as a one-time pack and includes 5,000 credits. Separate Starter pack and Standard pack options cost 5.00 USD per once and 20.00 USD per once, respectively, with the same credit amounts and credits that never expire. The one-time packs suit occasional bursts of paid work better than a recurring subscription, while the monthly-priced packs avoid an annual plan but do not state that credits never expire.

Platforms

Editsub is web-based and also lists Linux, macOS and Windows among its platforms. Its browser workflow is convenient for users who prefer not to install an editor, while desktop users may want to compare it with native alternatives.

Who it's for

Editsub fits independent creators, translators and small teams handling subtitle projects that mix editing, timing, transcription and translation. The shared project workflow and wide subtitle-format support are particularly useful when several people need to contribute. It is a weaker fit for users with subtitle files over 10MB or sustained long-form transcription needs that would make credit consumption a routine cost.

Pros and cons

Pros: One browser workspace handles editing, timing, translation and transcription, reducing the need to switch between separate tools.
Pros: Short local media files can be transcribed free without an account, making it easy to try the captioning workflow.
Pros: Shared project links support simultaneous editing, and created subtitles remain available for personal or commercial use.
Cons: Uploaded subtitle files are limited to 10MB, which can rule out larger projects even though the media workflow accepts files up to 3072MB.
Cons: Longer transcription and translation consume credits, so frequent users need to account for usage beyond the free short-clip allowance.
Cons: Pro is priced annually, which is less convenient for users who only need a short period of regular access.

Verdict

Choose Editsub if you want editing, timing, translation and short-clip transcription in one browser-based workspace, particularly when collaborators need to work on the same project. Its strongest reason to look elsewhere is the combination of a 10MB subtitle-upload cap and credit costs for longer transcription or translation; users with larger files or steady high-volume workloads should compare desktop editors or alternatives with plans tailored to their usage.
