Overview

Guac is a savings app that connects to checking accounts and ties saving to spending and goals. It suits people who want to shape contributions around specific aims and explore a Marketplace, but it is less suited to anyone who expects savings transfers to happen without manual action.

Its mix of spending-linked tools, custom rules, and goal setting offers more flexibility than a basic savings tracker.

Key features

Spending-linked contributions and goals

Guac’s Auto-Tip and percentage-based savings are designed to set contributions according to spending. Users can create goals and rules for aims such as a trip, a car, or groceries. This approach can suit savers who want to tailor contributions to several purposes; those who prefer card roundups will need another app.

Account connection and transfers

Guac synchronizes transactions through a connected checking account. Users can move money between that account and a Savings Goal, but transfers are manual. That keeps the user in control of when money moves, while ruling Guac out as a fully hands-off option.

Marketplace, privacy, and coverage

The Marketplace offers purchases that may earn cashback, and the app also offers side hustles. Cashback is a possibility, not a guaranteed return. Guac’s privacy policy says it does not sell or rent personal information and that communications between a user’s device and Guac are encrypted.

Coverage deserves careful attention: Google Play says Guac accounts are FDIC insured up to $250,000 through FFBKC Bank, Member FDIC. Guac’s homepage, however, says the company does not hold customer funds, is not a bank, and is not FDIC-insured; it also explains that FDIC insurance applies to the failure of an insured bank. Readers should understand which account holds their money and what protection applies before relying on the app.

Pricing

Guac uses a freemium model and advertises both a free version and a one-month free trial of Premium. The free version is free and includes Savings Tools and Marketplace access. That makes it a sensible starting point for trying goal-based, spending-linked savings without a subscription.

The maker advertises Premium features without detailing them, so users should confirm the price, renewal terms, and what changes after the trial before committing. The FAQ includes questions about daily savings and spending limits, but Guac does not state the limits in the page content opened.

Platforms

Guac is available on Android, iOS, and the web. The maker describes it as a web and mobile app, giving users both browser and phone access.

Who it's for

Guac is a good fit for people who want to direct spending-linked contributions toward multiple savings goals, adjust contributions with custom rules, and keep the option of manual transfers. Its free version provides a low-commitment way to start.

It is a weaker choice for people who want card roundups, automatic withdrawals, or clear Premium pricing and limits before trying the service. Anyone weighing the FDIC statements should also verify how their funds are held and protected.

Pros and cons

Pros: Spending-linked Auto-Tip and percentage-based savings pair with custom rules and separate goals, giving users ways to tailor contributions to different aims.
Pros: The free version includes Savings Tools and Marketplace access, and the one-month Premium trial gives users a way to explore the paid tier.
Pros: The Marketplace may offer cashback purchases, while side hustles add another option within the app.
Cons: Transfers are manual and card roundups are not available, so Guac does not suit users seeking automatic movement of savings.
Cons: Premium’s price and limits are unstated, and the FAQ raises daily savings and spending limits without giving the amounts.
Cons: The Google Play FDIC statement and Guac’s homepage statements about funds and insurance call for careful review before depositing money.

Alternatives

Automated Savings Apps is a useful place to compare options if Guac’s manual transfers are a drawback.

Chip may suit Android and iOS users looking for access to savings accounts, recurring deposits, and autosaves available for 45p per save on its free Basic plan.
Plum may be a better fit for users who want a limited spend tracker and one pocket on its free Basic plan, or who are willing to pay 3.99 EUR per month for Pro’s primary pocket plus three additional pockets.
Spave is worth considering for Android and iOS users who want a free app combining automatic saving with giving and donations to causes.
Betterment may suit readers seeking an option that includes Android, iOS, and web access and whose Digital and Premium plans specify balance requirements.
finbee may be relevant to readers comfortable comparing its Japanese-language plan information and bank transfer terms.
Piggo is another free option for Android, iOS, and web users; its free access is while the app is in beta.
PiggyVest may suit users who want no transaction charges or monthly fees, while accounting for processing fees on some products and possible early-withdrawal penalties.
SavingsBox may fit users who want personal savings boxes, bank and ACH payments, a wallet, and manual contributions on a free plan, with Premium at 4.99 USD per month.

Verdict

Choose Guac if you want custom, spending-linked saving for distinct goals and are comfortable initiating transfers yourself. The free version makes it approachable to try, but manual withdrawals are its clearest limitation. Look elsewhere if you need roundups or fully automatic transfers, and review Premium’s price and the account’s coverage terms before upgrading or moving money.
