Write an AI music prompt as a production brief: define the job of the track, its sonic ingredients, arrangement, vocal direction, and constraints in a deliberate order. Then change one variable at a time and save the prompt beside each generated version. The workflow below is designed for Suno and Udio, whose prompt and editing features suit iterative song creation.
Choose The Right Prompting Workspace
Both products can start from text, but their surrounding workflows differ. Choose the workspace before you design a prompt so that your brief matches the next editing step.

Step 1: State The Track’s Job
Open with the listener, context, and duration target you need. “Background music for a 90-second software demo” gives a clearer objective than “make something cool.” Keep the first sentence platform-neutral, then add the musical detail.
- Write one sentence naming the use case: tutorial intro, game menu, podcast bed, or standalone song.
- Add energy and emotional direction, such as restrained, tense, optimistic, or reflective.
- State whether the result should be vocal or instrumental. Both Suno and Udio support those two broad output types.
Example brief: “Create an instrumental bed for a developer conference recap: focused, forward-moving, and suitable under spoken narration.”

Step 2: Specify Genre And Sonic References Without Copying
Describe genre as a combination of rhythm, instrumentation, and production era. This gives the generator several independent signals instead of one vague label.
- Name a primary genre and, if useful, a secondary influence: “minimal electronic with post-rock dynamics.”
- Describe the groove: four-on-the-floor, swung, half-time, syncopated, or free-tempo.
- List two to five instruments or sound families, such as analog bass, muted guitar, granular pads, and dry hand percussion.
- Add production adjectives that affect texture: close-miked, spacious, distorted, warm, brittle, or cinematic.
Avoid asking for a living artist’s exact style. Translate the reference into observable characteristics—tempo feel, arrangement density, vocal register, and texture—so the brief communicates an original target.
Step 3: Describe The Arrangement As Sections

Step 4: Add Vocal And Lyric Direction
When the track needs a voice, separate lyric instructions from performance instructions. Suno generates vocals and lyrics; Udio can generate from lyrics and lets you edit lyrics and blend voice references.

- Set delivery: intimate, conversational, urgent, breathy, or stacked harmony.
- Specify language only when you have a clear requirement. Do not assume a language or pronunciation behavior that the product entry does not establish.
- Paste your own lyrics when exact wording matters, then mark sections plainly with labels such as Verse, Chorus, and Bridge.
Keep each lyric line singable and avoid packing several ideas into one sentence. For an instrumental result, say “no lead vocal” and remove lyric text from the brief.

Step 5: Turn Constraints Into Testable Instructions
Constraints make iterations comparable. Write them as checks you can hear or inspect rather than as a long list of negative adjectives.
- Instrument focus: “bass and kick remain clear under narration.”
- Density: “leave space between phrases; avoid a constant wall of sound.”
- Ending: “finish with a resolved chord and a short tail.”
- Variation: “make the second chorus more intense through added percussion, not a new genre.”
Put the most important constraints first. If a generation misses one, change that instruction specifically instead of rewriting the entire prompt.

- Generate the first result using only the core brief: job, genre, arrangement, and vocal choice.
- Log the failure in concrete terms, such as “chorus arrives too early” or “pad masks narration.”
- Change one instruction to address that failure, then generate again.
- Keep the better version and branch from it for the next change.
In Suno, use extensions or section replacement when the problem is localized. In Udio, use lyric edits, audio transformation, or Sessions timeline refinement when the issue is tied to words or a specific passage.

If you use an audio reference, describe what should carry over—tempo feel, harmonic motion, or texture—and what must change. Suno lists audio uploads, and Udio supports voice references and audio transformations, but neither product entry grants permission to use someone else’s recording or voice.
- Use audio and voices you created or have permission to use.
- State the transformation boundary: “retain the rhythmic feel, replace the melody and instrumentation.”
- Keep a note of the source and consent alongside the prompt.
Step 8: Check Rights Before Publishing
Review the current platform terms for the exact account and output before releasing a track. Suno’s Free Plan does not include commercial rights. Udio’s entry states that audio, video, and stem downloads are disabled during its transition period, so confirm what export and usage permissions apply when you are ready to publish. For vocals, covers, uploaded samples, or voice references, use only material you have consent to use and follow each platform’s terms.

Copy this structure, then fill each bracket with a concrete choice:
