The best Chrome screen recorder depends on where you want the video to go. Choose Loom for an instant share link, Screencastify for Google Classroom and Chromebook lessons, Awesome Screen Recorder & Screenshot for video plus full-page screenshots, or Screenity for unlimited local recording without signing in. For a simpler local screenshot-and-video tool, consider Scrnli; for sales tracking, Vidyard; and for recording that can continue into a desktop editor, ScreenPal. The free plans differ sharply: some cap your lifetime video count, others limit each recording, and Screenity’s core extension says it has no count or time limit.

At a glance

Chrome Web Store user counts and ratings below are listing figures observed in November 2026; they change over time. Plan prices are US-dollar figures where available, and the date qualifier is included because some prices come from September snapshots rather than a current vendor price page.

Name Best for Key spec Free plan / price Platforms Checked
Loom Fast hosted team updates 8,000,000 users; 2.7/5 from 10.2K ratings Starter: 25 videos, 5 minutes each, up to 720p Chrome extension; iOS and Android apps Nov 2026
Screencastify Classroom and Google Drive lessons 9,000,000 users; 3.5/5 from 11.7K ratings 10 videos, up to 30 minutes each; paid prices shown in a Sept 2026 vendor-verified snapshot: Starter $7/user/month annual or $19 monthly; Pro $10 annual or $25 monthly Chrome, Chrome OS, Chromebooks, Chromeboxes Nov 2026
Awesome Screen Recorder & Screenshot Video and full-page screenshots in one extension 4,000,000 users; 4.7/5 from 29.6K ratings Free local video commonly reported at 5 minutes; cloud tier 20 recordings and 100 images. Sept 2026 snapshot: Basic $5/month annual or $6 monthly; Professional $6 annual or $8 monthly Chrome browser, including Chromebook use Nov 2026
Screenity No-sign-in local recording without a stated time or count cap 200,000 users; 3.7/5 from 765 ratings Core extension free; optional Pro cloud features Chrome extension; exports include MP4, GIF, WebM, and Google Drive Nov 2026
Scrnli Local video plus screenshots and annotation 1,000,000 users; 4.8/5 from 11K ratings Free local use is reported; no public price list found in the cited September 2026 snapshot Chrome extension Nov 2026
Vidyard Outbound sales videos with viewer tracking Watch notifications and viewing data 5 videos per month, up to 30 minutes each Chrome extension and hosted sharing workflow Nov 2026
ScreenPal Teachers and trainers who may need a desktop editor Browser recording can launch the desktop editor 15 minutes per video when signed in; 5 minutes without an account Chrome browser; full multi-track editor for Windows and Mac Nov 2026

Rating and user figures are Chrome Web Store listing snapshots, not a measure of recording quality. Screencastify and Loom have the two largest install counts in this group, but their live listing ratings were 3.5/5 and 2.7/5 respectively; Awesome Screenshot’s was 4.7/5. Read the rating count alongside the average, and check the listing again before installing.

What makes a Chrome screen recorder the right choice?

Start with the destination and the limits, not the star score. A toolbar extension may send a hosted link, save a file to your computer, or put a classroom recording in Google Drive. Those workflows are not interchangeable: a local recording gives you control over the file, while a hosted link can be ready to share as soon as you stop.

  • Need to send a quick explanation? Loom and Vidyard are link-first tools. Loom is suited to asynchronous team feedback; Vidyard adds sales-oriented viewer notifications and tracking.
  • Teaching on a Chromebook or using Google Classroom? Screencastify connects its recording workflow with Drive and Classroom and supports interactive questions.
  • Need screenshots as well as video? Awesome Screen Recorder & Screenshot and Scrnli include still capture and annotation features.
  • Want recordings without a sign-in or stated time cap? Screenity’s listing describes unlimited core recordings and local or user-owned Drive exports.
  • Need more editing control after capture? ScreenPal’s browser recorder can launch its Windows/Mac desktop editor; Screencastify and Screenity also describe in-browser editing tools.

For daily use, distinguish a per-video time cap from a total video allowance. Loom Starter limits both the number of videos and their length. Screencastify’s free offer has a 10-video count cap, even though each video may run up to 30 minutes. A plan described as free can therefore be adequate for occasional work but unsuitable for repeated lessons or product walkthroughs.

Which Chrome screen recorder extensions are best in 2026?

The picks below are ranked by how well they serve common workflows, not by a blended score. Store ratings are useful context, but they do not tell you whether a tool saves locally, supports classroom sharing, or fits your free-plan needs.

1. Loom: best for quick team updates and share links

Loom records screen, camera, microphone, and internal audio, then saves the result to the cloud and provides a link. Its Chrome Web Store listing describes comments and emoji reactions, and supports recording quality up to 720p, 1080p, 1440p, or 4K HD. The Chrome listing names Atlassian as developer. Loom is a natural fit for teammates already sharing work through tools such as Slack, Jira, Notion, and Gmail, because its core workflow is sending a watch page rather than passing around a video file.

Free and paid plans: Loom Starter is $0 and includes 25 videos per person, screen recordings up to five minutes, quality up to 720p, unlimited screenshots, transcripts in 50-plus languages, comments and emoji reactions, and up to 50 members. Business costs $18 per user per month and removes the video-count and recording-time limits, raises quality up to 4K, removes Loom branding, and adds upload/download and trim/stitch tools. Business + AI is $24 per user per month and adds summaries, chapters, filler-word and silence removal, and transcript-based editing. Enterprise pricing is by sales contact and includes SSO/SCIM and a 99.95% uptime SLA. The official Loom pricing page showed an annual-billing banner saying “SAVE UP TO 17%”; that is not a specific discounted price. Prices checked Nov 2026.

Limits and fit: The Starter five-minute ceiling quickly becomes restrictive for a walkthrough or lesson, and an account is required. The Chrome Web Store listing showed 8,000,000 users and a 2.7/5 rating from 10.2K ratings on Nov 6, 2026, with an update dated Nov 2, 2026. A Sept 18 snapshot had shown 4.6/5 with the same rating count; the later listing figure is the current one, and the change alone does not establish its cause. The listing’s privacy disclosures include personally identifiable information, financial and payment information, authentication information, location, and user activity.

2. Screencastify: best for Google Classroom and Chromebook lessons

Screencastify records a desktop, browser tab, webcam, or combinations of them from Chrome, without an additional Java, Flash, or other plugin installation. Its listing describes in-browser editing, interactive questions, translated captions in 50-plus languages, and sharing to Google Drive and Google Classroom. Export options include MP4, animated GIF, and MP3. The listing says captures use WebM/VP8 video with Ogg Vorbis audio. It is now part of Castify and is particularly relevant to teachers, trainers, and Drive-centric teams.

Free and paid plans: The official pricing page lists 10 free videos, each up to 30 minutes. The next paid tier lists unlimited videos, up to 60 minutes per video and up to 1080p; Pro lists unlimited videos, up to 180 minutes per video and up to 4K. The page also lists removing the Castify watermark and LMS connections including Google Classroom, Canvas, and Schoology. Dollar prices were not exposed in the page’s Nov 6, 2026 static content. A vendor-verified Sept 18, 2026 pricing snapshot citing Screencastify listed Starter at $7 per user/month billed annually or $19 monthly, and Pro at $10 per user/month billed annually or $25 monthly. Treat those as a September snapshot, not a confirmed November checkout quote. See the Screencastify pricing page for plan limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limits and fit: The free 10-video allowance is a count limit, not a renewable pool; deleting an older video does not restore a slot. The pricing FAQ says new users can store, watch, and share those first 10 videos for as long as they want. It also describes five bonus videos for each person invited, up to four invites and 20 bonus videos total. The Chrome Web Store showed 9,000,000 users, 3.5/5 from 11.7K ratings, and an update date of Oct 16, 2026. Its listing says it runs on Chrome OS, Chromebooks, and Chromeboxes. Screencastify warns that screen recording is CPU-intensive and that older or weaker computers may lag if several programs and tabs are open.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

3. Awesome Screen Recorder & Screenshot: best combined screenshot and video toolbar

Awesome Screen Recorder & Screenshot combines screen recording with full-page, selected-area, and visible-area screenshots. Screenshot tools include blur, arrows, and text. For video, the listing describes desktop, current-tab, or camera capture, microphone support, an embedded webcam, and 720p, 1080p, or 4K options. Recordings can be saved to local disk or an online account, in WebM or MP4, and shared by link or through services including Jira, Slack, Trello, Asana, and GitHub. This is a practical fit for people who otherwise keep separate extensions for documenting a page and explaining it aloud.

Free and paid plans: Chrome Geek’s Oct 16, 2026 description reports unlimited local screenshots, local free videos commonly capped at five minutes, and a cloud free tier of 20 videos and 100 images. A ScreenApp vendor-verified snapshot from Sept 18, 2026, citing the vendor pricing page, listed Basic at $5/month billed annually or $6 monthly, and Professional at $6/month billed annually or $8 monthly; Professional was described as including unlimited recordings up to 4K. The live pricing page did not yield extractable content on Nov 6, so those dollar amounts are dated snapshots. Recheck Awesome Screenshot pricing for current checkout terms.

Limits and fit: The key trade-off is that local saving and cloud storage have different caps; do not assume the cloud allowance describes local files. The extension listing showed 4,000,000 users, 4.7/5 from 29.6K ratings, and an update date of Sept 11, 2026. Its listing claims more than 10 years of stable service and says it has no ads and respects privacy. The product requests broad site access, so review its permission prompt and restrict access if you do not need it available on every site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Screenity: best free, no-sign-in option for local recordings

Screenity is an open-source screen recorder and annotation extension. Its listing supports recording a tab, selected area, desktop, application, or camera, with microphone or internal audio. It also describes drawing, text and arrows, zoom, click and cursor highlighting, and AI-powered camera backgrounds or blur. Export formats include MP4, GIF, and WebM, with Google Drive as another destination. The developer’s listing says, “No limits, make as many videos as you want, for as long as you want,” and says the core extension will remain free, private, and open source. Its source repository is Screenity on GitHub.

Free and paid plans: The core extension is free and does not require sign-in. Optional Pro features listed by the developer include 50GB of cloud storage, EU-based infrastructure, automatic captions, and automatic zoom on clicks; a Pro price was not stated in the listing facts available here. The local-first workflow suits someone who wants a recording file rather than a hosted vendor page, and the Drive export allows a user-owned sharing destination.

Limits and fit: Screenity is video-first, not a full-page screenshot specialist. Long local exports can put pressure on browser memory. The Chrome Web Store listing showed 200,000 users, a 3.7/5 rating from 765 ratings, version 4.7.2, and an update date of Oct 25, 2026. Its privacy statement says the developer does not collect data; the listing’s privacy disclosure nonetheless names personally identifiable and authentication information, so read the current Privacy practices box rather than treating either short statement as a complete substitute for the other.

5. Scrnli: best simple local recorder with screenshots

Scrnli combines screen, browser-tab, and desktop recording with screenshots of a full page, selected area, or visible screen. It includes annotation, local saving, and link sharing. It is a straightforward choice if you want still capture alongside video and prefer saving a file over building a team library. The Chrome Web Store listing showed 1,000,000 users and 4.8/5 from 11K ratings, with version 4.3.10 and an update date of Nov 4, 2026.

Anker USB C Hub, 7in1 Multi-Port USB Adapter, 4K@60Hz USBC to HDMI Splitter | 85W Max PD, 2 USB 3.0 & 1 USBC Data Ports, SD/TF Card Reader, for Laptops/Mac and Other Type C Devices (Charger Not Included)
  • Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Free and paid plans: Chrome Geek treats Scrnli as a free local recorder, and the listing emphasizes local saving. A public price list was not found in a Sept 18, 2026 snapshot, so there is no supported paid-plan price to quote here. The listing says the developer will not collect or use data and that Scrnli does not collect or store personal data.

Limits and fit: The listing does not publish a recording time limit, so do not read that silence as a guarantee of unlimited recording. Scrnli lacks a team library and viewer analytics, and MP4 conversion happens in the browser tab. The store’s developer identity is comparatively thin: the listing gives an email address, [email protected], and labels the developer a non-trader. Its high rating should be read alongside the 11K rating count and its maintenance date.

6. Vidyard: best for sales videos and viewer activity

Vidyard is designed for outbound sales rather than general-purpose lessons: its browser recording workflow pairs a video with watch notifications and information about how much a recipient viewed. It also offers speaker notes that do not appear in the final video, useful for keeping a sales explanation on track without putting the script on screen. This distinction matters if the goal is to follow up with a prospect, not simply share a recording.

Free and paid plans: Chrome Geek’s Oct 16, 2026 and DashShot’s Oct 20, 2026 descriptions report a free allowance of five videos per month, each up to 30 minutes. A current vendor price was not established here, so no paid dollar figure is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limits and fit: The monthly count makes the free option better for occasional outreach than frequent recording. Viewer tracking is useful in a sales workflow but unnecessary overhead for many classroom and personal-use recordings. An account is required for the hosted sharing model.

7. ScreenPal: best when browser capture is a first step toward desktop editing

ScreenPal, formerly Screencast-O-Matic, offers browser screen and webcam recording as well as screenshots. Its browser launcher can open ScreenPal’s desktop editor, where the full multi-track editor runs on Windows and Mac. That makes it a better fit for a teacher or trainer who expects to move beyond a quick capture than for someone who only wants a no-friction share link.

Free and paid plans: Chrome Geek’s Oct 16, 2026 listing reports free recording limits of 15 minutes per video when signed in and five minutes without an account. A current paid price was not established here, so it is not included.

  • 100W Charging: Support up to 90W USB C pass-through charging via Type-C port to keep your laptop powered. 10W is reserved for other interface operations. No data and video function on the Type-C port.
  • 4K HDMI Display: The HDMI port supports media display at resolutions up to 4K 30Hz, keeping every incredible moment detailed and ultra vivid. Please note that the C port of the Host device needs to support video output.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.

Limits and fit: The longer free recording allowance requires signing in, and the fuller editing workflow depends on desktop software rather than staying entirely in the Chrome toolbar. It is worth considering when that editor handoff is useful; if you only need a link, Loom or Vidyard is more directly organized around sharing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should you choose a Chrome screen recorder?

Match the extension to your destination, capture needs, and tolerance for caps. Before adopting one for a team or class, check its current store listing: ratings, permissions, and plan terms can change.

  1. Choose where the recording should live. Loom and Vidyard host videos and provide links. Screencastify centers Drive and Classroom sharing. Screenity, Scrnli, and Awesome Screenshot can save locally; Screenity also lists Google Drive export.
  2. Calculate the free-plan cost in recordings, not dollars. Loom Starter allows 25 five-minute videos; Screencastify permits 10 videos up to 30 minutes; Vidyard reports five videos each month up to 30 minutes. Awesome Screenshot’s local and cloud limits differ. Screenity’s listing is the one that states no core count or duration cap.
  3. Check the capture modes you need. Confirm whether you need one browser tab, an application window, the whole desktop, a webcam bubble, microphone audio, or internal/tab audio. Loom and Screenity explicitly describe internal audio; Loom describes screen, camera, and microphone. Screencastify lists desktop, tab, and webcam recording.
  4. Decide whether screenshots belong in the same tool. Awesome Screenshot supports full-page and selected-area stills with markup; Scrnli includes page and screen screenshots; ScreenPal also offers screenshots. Screenity is not a full-page screenshot tool.
  5. Read the privacy disclosure and permission warning. Loom’s Chrome listing discloses collection categories including financial/payment information, authentication, location, and user activity. Screencastify lists personally identifiable information. Scrnli says it does not collect or use data. Compare those disclosures with the access the extension requests before installing.
  6. Check maintenance and rating volume. The listed update dates for the main five were Aug? no: Screenity Oct 25, Loom Nov 2, Screencastify Oct 16, Awesome Screenshot Sept 11, and Scrnli Nov 4, 2026. Look at both rating average and number of ratings; tiny samples can give a misleading impression.

Can a Chrome extension record your whole screen without you knowing?

No. Chrome uses its own “Choose what to share” dialog before a screen capture begins, and it shows an indicator while sharing is active. An extension cannot silently begin recording your screen. You must still treat the extension’s site permissions separately from the capture prompt: broad site access may allow an extension to read page content even when it is not recording.

Before clicking Add to Chrome, read the browser’s permission warning. For capture extensions, the important line may be “Read and change all your data on all websites,” which means access to pages such as email, banking, and internal tools—not only the tab you intend to record. After installation, use chrome://extensions → Details → Site access → On click when available and suitable for your workflow. This restricts routine access, though you will need to grant access when using the extension.

Also open the listing’s Privacy practices section. A statement such as “will not collect or use your data” is a developer disclosure, not a replacement for reviewing requested permissions and where your recordings are stored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which recorder is best for a Chromebook?

Screencastify is the clearest Chromebook-specific fit: its listing explicitly supports Chrome OS, Chromebooks, and Chromeboxes and says it runs in the browser without Java or Flash. Awesome Screenshot is also described as working in Chrome on Chromebooks. Screenity and Scrnli are Chrome extensions as well, but long local exports may be demanding on a less powerful machine.

Keep the workload light while recording. Screencastify warns that screen capture is CPU-intensive; closing extra tabs and programs can reduce competing load. For a lesson that needs Drive or Classroom sharing and captions, Screencastify’s education-focused features may matter more than a higher rating. For a no-sign-in local clip, Screenity is a different fit.

How do Loom and Screencastify differ?

Loom is optimized for fast asynchronous communication through a cloud link, comments, and reactions; Screencastify is oriented toward lessons and classroom workflows with Drive/Classroom sharing, interactive questions, and LMS connections. Their free limits also answer different needs: Loom offers more short recordings, while Screencastify allows fewer recordings that can each run longer.

Decision point Loom Starter Screencastify Free
Free video allowance 25 videos per person First 10 videos; invitations can add up to 20 bonus videos
Maximum video length 5 minutes 30 minutes
Main sharing path Cloud watch link Google Drive and Google Classroom
Distinctive workflow features Comments and emoji reactions Interactive questions, captions, LMS connections
Listing rating, Nov 2026 2.7/5 from 10.2K ratings 3.5/5 from 11.7K ratings

Choose based on the shape of your recordings. Frequent short explanations to coworkers fit Loom’s five-minute clips and share page. Longer student demonstrations fit Screencastify’s 30-minute allowance, provided ten total free videos are enough or the school chooses a paid tier.

How we picked these extensions

The shortlist prioritizes distinct, documented workflows: hosted async sharing, classroom/Drive distribution, combined screenshots and recordings, local no-sign-in capture, sales viewer tracking, and a browser-to-desktop editor path. It also weighs free-plan limits, capture modes, privacy disclosures, store rating volume, and update recency. Chrome Web Store ratings and user counts are presented as dated listing snapshots, not as recording-quality benchmarks; no standards-body or independent lab frame-rate, CPU, or file-size benchmark was published for these extensions in 2026.

Some useful distinctions are outside the main seven. Cap is an open-source Loom-style share-link option, but a Chrome Web Store snapshot on Oct 29, 2026 showed only 10,000 users and seven ratings, too small a review base to make it a default recommendation. The old Nimbus Capture Chrome listing no longer loads; capture is now associated with FuseBase Pro, so do not install a dead Nimbus listing. GoFullPage and FireShot are screenshot specialists rather than video recorders, and Scribe creates written step-by-step guides with stills rather than conventional screen-and-audio video.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get more free Screencastify videos without paying?

Screencastify’s pricing FAQ says each person invited to join adds five bonus videos, up to four invites and 20 bonus videos total. The added allowance is still finite, so it helps a small classroom or team trial rather than turning the free tier into unlimited recording.

Why do Chrome screen recorder ratings change?

Chrome Web Store averages can shift as users add ratings, and a rating snapshot is only meaningful alongside its count and date. A changing score by itself does not establish why reviewers responded differently.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Will a screen recorder make my Chromebook lag?

It can, especially on older or weaker hardware while other programs and many tabs are open. Screencastify specifically warns that recording is CPU-intensive; close unneeded tabs and apps before a long capture.

Does a screen recorder extension always need permission to read every website?

Some capture extensions request broad site access, while Chrome also offers site-access controls for limiting when an extension can access pages. Read the permission prompt and the store listing’s Privacy practices before installing, then restrict access to On click where that option is available.
