Location based check-in application Foursquare has released a major update for its Android app. It now offers the users location-based recommendations via push notifications. The feature works even when the user has not checked-in. These new background notifications help users discover more when they check-in on their favorite place.

Foursquare explained how these would work and what would the additional battery drain:

When sitting down for dinner in a new restaurant, the app will suggest a popular dish on the menu. Likewise, when a user enters a new city for the first time, the app might recommend some of the best places to visit. From our internal tests on a bunch of phones, it only increases the drain about 0.7 percent per hour, or, over the course of a day, the equivalent of about a 20-minute game of Angry Birds.

Previously the applications suggested the tagged locations nearby to your place of check-in, but now it will keep working the background and will ping you whenever you are in the neighborhood of an interesting place. Foursquare aims to provide as much information about the whereabouts to the users as possible and keep them engaged in the application.

In related news, the previous rumors that Microsoft has approached Foursquare for an investment opportunity have been dismissed. According to the sources, Foursquare’s spokesperson Brendan Lewis has dismissed the reports.

Foursquare has over 4 billion check-ins and more than 32 million tips that have been shared globally via the service related to the places or services worth discovering. The update is being rolled out to the users gradually and you can download it from the Google Play Store as soon as it is available for your region. For the time being, it is being rolled out to the Android users only and will be coming to iPhone in the coming weeks.

A new Kickstarter project Pressy aims to convert your 3.5 mm Audio Jack become an extra button for your Android Smartphone. Pressy lets you configure one-touch actions like turning on the flashlight, taking a quick photo, record a phone call or toggle Wi-Fi/Bluetooth. It is great for people who want a dedicated physical key for an action.

Pressy button

It works like this: The user needs to insert the Pressy button into the headphone jack, fire up the free app, configure the button’s usage and press as per your need. Pressy app can even hook up with Tasker, so that a user proficient in Tasker can accomplish virtually anything.

Features pressy

Coming to actions, it lets you perform all sorts of action and you can add your custom ones as well. You can select different actions for single, double and long clicks. The app also lets you use your audio jack for the intended functionality so it is dead simple. It comes pre-set with 3 actions, but you can always configure to your heart’s content and as many times as required.

Thickness Assembly

Pressy works with all Android devices with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and above. At the time of writing this article, Pressy has gathered nearly four times its original goal of $40,000 with 45 days to go in its Kickstarter campaign. You can pledge $17 for a piece yourself and it even ships outside the US if you add $5 to it. Hurry because the $15 special price ended soon. Pressy will ship in March 2014 to all the backers.

The nifty gadget once again highlights the question of the absence of dedicated buttons on Android Smartphones and its success proves that users need these buttons. Pressy will definitely highlight the point to the OEMs, and we expect them to try and differentiate themselves by coupling one Pressy button with every phone in future deals or incorporate any other workaround of their own to lure Smartphone buyers.

It will have 1 GB of RAM, speakers placed on the strap and will come in two variants of 6GB and 8GB internal storage. The unhappy news is that it will offer a battery life of just 10 hours. To recap, Samsung Galaxy Gear is rumored to pack a 1.5 GHz dual core processor, Mali 400 GPU, inbuilt speakers and is expected to run on Android Jelly Bean OS. It will use NFC and Bluetooth LE for connectivity and will have sensors for health applications, swipe and gesture features and related battery optimizations.
