What are Ultrabooks?

Ultrabooks are type of subnotebooks defined by Intel. They feature reduced size and weight while retaining standard performance by using low-power Intel CULV processors with integrated graphics, solid-state drives, and unibody chassis.

Ultrabooks started firing up the market since last year. In 2011, Apple MacBook Air and Acer Aspire 3951 were the top players in Ultrabooks category, although loved one was always the MacBook Air!

Following things define an Ultrabook,

  • Thin
  • Light Weight
  • Long Battery Life
  • Mainstream Pricing

Thin

Unlike notebooks, Ultrabooks are extremely thin. Intel has noted that an ideal Ultrabook should be less than 21mm, and a most of 0.8inch thickness (that’s thinness!)

Light Weight

Lightweight Ultrabooks are not as heavy as notebooks, that’s because its thinness and also due to its screen size. An Ultrabook can weigh as less as 1.4kg or less even further.

Long Battery Life

Due to use of low power consuming components, the battery used balances the hardware and provides a better battery life of  5 to 8 hours.

Pricing

Ultrabooks are not as cheaper as Netbooks their pricing lie little close or below the mid end Notebooks. The range lies between $1000 to $1300.

Ultrabooks come in 11inch or 13inch flavor, some people might find it too small and so Intel is looking forward to bring up 14inch and 15inch Ultrabook, later in 2012. Like tablets replaced Notebooks in some fields, Intel expects that nearly 40% of the consumer laptop market segment will be consumed by Ultrabooks.
